Westcott FJ400 is a sleek 400ws portable flash head with cross-platform radio trigger

Lighting and accessory manufacturer Westcott has announced a studio-style battery operated portable flash head that it claims has a recycle time of less than a second at full power, and which can be triggered by a wireless controller that’s compatible with the TTL flash system of ‘virtually any camera brand’. The Westcott FJ400 is a mono-block style head that takes Bowens S mount modifiers and which is powered by a 4400mAh lithium polymer battery that is said to deliver more than 480 full power bursts per charge. The heads also come with an AC power lead.

A dial on the side of the unit allows the power to be adjusted over a 9-stop range in full or 1/10th stop increments, and flash duration varies between 1/1280sec and 1/19,000sec depending on output levels and the mode set. The head can pulse to match a 20fps camera drive and allows high speed sync with shutter speeds as short as 1/8000sec. The wireless system in driven by a particularly powerful 2.4GHz radio communication network that the company says has a range of 300m/985ft, and heads can be organised in 10 groups over 16 channels.

A large display panel on the side of the flash allows users to see at the glance the unit’s settings and a 20W LED modelling lamp helps to preview the look of the light before the shutter is pressed. Westcott has mounted the flash tube well away from the body of the housing to push light out at a wide angle and a diffuser dome is supplied in kits as an accessory to soften the light before it enters the modifier.

Westcott has also introduced wireless controller for the head that it says is compatible with a wide range of flash systems from different camera manufacturers. Each Westcott FJ-X2m Universal Wireless Flash Trigger is said to work with Canon, Nikon, Sony (with adapter), Fuji, Panasonic Lumix, and Olympus cameras, as well as the Canon RT flash system. It is powered by its own lithium ion battery that is good for over 200,000 triggers per charge, and sits in the camera’s hotshoe. The controller is also supplied with a Bluetooth connection that allows it to be adjusted remotely using a smartphone app.

The Westcott FJ400 basic kit costs $ 569.90 and the FJ-X2m controller costs $ 99.90, and both are due to ship in late October. For more information see the Westcott website.

Phottix launches Ares ll radio flash triggering system with more channels

Independent flash and accessories manufacturer Phottix has announced the next generation of its Ares remote flash triggering system that brings with it additional channels and improved security. The Ares ll transmitter and receiver have also both been given a facelift to include a new clearer control layout and LCDs to display functional information.

The new system offers a total of 16 radio channels, twice the number of the previous model, and can now deal with 4 groups of flashes. The units also include digital ID so that users can be sure other photographers in the area won’t interfere with their signal.

Using the first four channels the Ares ll can trigger Phottix Strato-compatible flash units, such as the Mitros+ hotshoe gun and the Indra studio heads, while all channels will trigger hotshoe flash units attached to an Ares ll receiver. The system allows a maximum flash sync speed of 1/250 sec, and both trigger and receiver are powered by two AA batteries each.

While the new units have a much more user-friendly design they have lost 50m of range compared to the original Ares, and can only operate at up to 150m – which is still enough for most uses. The units are compatible with the hotshoe and flash foot of cameras and flash units from ‘most major camera and flash systems (including Sony)’ according to Phottix.

Adorama introduces Canon RT radio controlled TTL studio head and hotshoe flash

Camera store Adorama has announced that it is to introduce a new line of monoblock studio heads that are designed to work directly with Canon’s RT radio TTL flash system. The company claims that the Orlit Rovelight RT 610 TTL Wireless Monolight, with its RT system built-in, is the first of its kind. The head can also be used with all Canon and Nikon DSLRs using the Orlit TR-611C and TR-612N TTL Transceivers that have been launched alongside the head. These transceivers allow TTL control of the head even with Nikon cameras.

The Orilt Rovelight RT 610 TTL is a 600Ws head with a guide number of 201ft/61m @ ISO 100 that features modes for Canon’s ETTL and Nikon’s iTTL metering systems. It is powered by a rechargeable 6000mAh lithium ion battery pack that Adorama claims is good for 450 full-power flashes per charge. The longest recycle time will be 2.5 seconds at full power, but the head offers output settings down to 1/256th in 1/3EV steps across the nine-stop range. There is said to be a variance of only 150 K across the output range from the standard color temperature of 5500 K, and a high speed sync mode allows for shutter speeds of up to 1/8000sec. The modeling bulb is a 20W LED that has a 3200 K tungsten color balance and three brightness levels.

The head accepts Bowens S-type modifiers and has an integrated umbrella shaft slot. The flash control system can be divided into five groups, while 16 channels are provided to avoid interference with other systems in the vicinity.

The new studio head can also be controlled by or work alongside the company’s Orlit RT-600C TTL Speedlite. This new flash unit can sit in the camera’s hotshoe to act as a master or it can join a group of other RT flashes as a slave. The unit has a guide number of 160ft/48m @ ISO 100.

The new studio head, flash unit and transceivers will ship later this month but can be ordered now on the Adorama website.

Elinchrom extends Skyport radio transmitter compatibility to Panasonic Lumix cameras

Flash manufacturer Elinchrom has released new firmware for its EL-Skyport Transmitter Plus HS for Olympus so that the device will be able to work with Panasonic Lumix cameras as well as Olympus OM-D models. The transmitter, which is already compatible with all OM-D and Pen models, as well as the E-5 and E-410, will now work with Lumix models as far back as the G7, including the LX100 compact and the FZ1000 bridge camera.

Compatibility with the system means that the listed cameras can be used with a Skyport transmitter to trigger and control the output of a host of Elinchrom flash heads. Elinchrom products that can be used range from portable battery-powered heads to units designed for studio use. Photographers can use the Skyport transmitter to control four groups of heads via 40 channels, and a high speed sync mode allows shutter speeds as short as 1/8000sec. Elinchrom says that the system has an operating range of 200m, and that the 2.4GHz radio communication signals can pass through walls.

Godox launches mini radio flash unit for Sony mirrorless cameras

Flash and accessory manufacturer Godox has announced a new small flash unit that it says is designed to go with the Sony mirrorless range of cameras. The Godox TT350S features 2.4GHz radio control and TTL exposure metering, and offers a guide number of 36m@ISO 100. The company says that the unit is compatible with the Sony a7R II, a7R, as well as the a58 and a77ll SLT cameras. Some RX models are also able to pair with the unit.

The radio controlled system allows the TT350S to work alongside other Godox radio flash units and studio heads, and the flash can operate as a master or slave in multiple-head set-ups. Three groups are programmed into the control system along with 16 channels, while the maximum working range is said to be 30m. High speed sync is provided via an HSS mode that can work with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 sec, and the unit can be switched from TTL to manual operation to make use of 22 output levels from 1/128th power. An automatically zooming head covers focal lengths of 24-105mm, and a hinge allows the head to tilt but not to swivel.

The TT350S is powered by two AA batteries which the company claims should be good for 210 full power bursts. There is no official pricing yet, but one UK ebay seller is offering pre-orders for £73 and says delivery is expected early January.

Bowens introduces Generation X studio and portable flash heads with TTL radio control

UK flash manufacturer Bowens will use the PhotoPlus Expo to launch its new range of Generation X flash heads in the USA. The new range has a completely new design and features a portable model that is powered by an in-body rechargeable battery.

There are four heads in the new range: the XMT 500, XMS 500, XMS 750 and XMS 1000, all of which offer radio controlled triggering and control via new on-camera transceiver XMSR Trigger. The XMS mono-block heads are designed for indoor and in-studio use while the XMT 500 takes a removable lithium ion cell that the company claims delivers up to 500 full power bursts per charge. This portable head also offers TTL control for Canon, Nikon and Sony users.

All of the new heads have a high speed sync mode that allows shutter speeds as short a 1/8000sec, and the XMSR radio remote allows such high speed shooting with any brand of camera. The XMT 500 has a minimum flash duration of 1/10,309sec, and the XMS heads have shortest durations of 1/5180sec, 1/4800sec and 1/4400sec, which makes them all suitable for freezing action and moving subjects.

The XMS 500 has 7 stops of adjustable power, while the XMS 750 and XMS 1000 offer 8 stops. The XMT can manage 9 stops and has a lowest output of just 2Ws. The battery-operated head has recycle times of between 0.01 and 2 seconds, and the XMS 1000 can also recover from a full power burst in 2 seconds. Bowens claims each of the heads has a flash-to-flash consistency of +/-30°K and +/-0.05 stops.

Bowens is particularly proud of a new adjustment lever that allows the heads to be tilted very quickly without the user having to wind open a bolt. The new lever just flips open to allow the angle of the head to be adjusted and then flips back to lock the head in position.

PocketWizard introduces FlexTT5 TTL radio system for Panasonic

PocketWizard is making its FlexTT5 TTL radio system available to Panasonic shooters, bringing wireless control to Panasonic’s speedlights without requiring a line of sight configuration. When used with the DMW-FL360L and DMW-FL580L the FlexTT5 will allow for sync speeds of 1/8000sec. TTL compatibility will be limited to those two flash units and the Lumix GH4 at launch; PocketWizard plans to add support for other bodies and flashes with firmware updates.

Firmware update for Sony a7R II improves stability, adds support for radio controlled flashes

Sony has released a firmware update for its a7R II full-frame mirrorless camera which improves camera stability while adding support for the company’s new radio controlled lighting system.

The official list of improvements in version 3.30 include:

  • Support for Radio Controlled Lighting System
  • Improved stability in picture shooting mode (by optimizing temperature control)
  • Allows for HDMI output while using Remote Camera Control software
  • Improves overall stability and operability of the camera

Nissin adds radio receiver unit to Air system for branded flash units

Flash manufacturer Nissin has announced it has produced a receiver unit for its NAS wireless flash communication system that allows flash units from Canon, Nikon and Sony to be used within its radio command structure. The new Air R units are designed to convert flashguns that usually rely on line-of-sight optical control when used off camera in a group to come under the company’s 2.4GHz radio network.

Once mounted into the hotshoe of the receiver flash units from Nissin and other brands compatible with Canon, Nikon or Sony systems can be controlled by either an Air transmitter from the hotshoe of the camera, or by a Nissin flash unit that features the Air commander mode – such as the new i60A.

The receiver is equipped with eight channels and can work in one of three groups. The system allows flash exposure compensation of +/-2EV and manual output from full to 1/128th power. The company says the NAS Air system has a range of 30m and supports high speed sync at shutter speeds of up to 1/8000sec. The Nissin Air R units will cost £59.94 or £109.98 with a Nissin Commander Air 1 transmitter.

Making (radio) waves: Nikon releases SB-5000 Speedlight

The Nikon SB-5000 Speedlight is the company’s new flagship flash, released alongside the flagship Nikon D5 camera. The standout feature for the SB-5000 is its ability to operate and trigger via radio frequency, a first for Nikon’s line of portable flashes.

Nikon claims that when the flash is paired with the WR-R10 Wireless Remote Adapter set and a D5 or D500, the flash will operate without a direct line of sight at a range of up to approximately 98 feet (30 meters). With that same combination, the flash will be able to control up to six groups or 18 Speedlights for when you want to get really fancy. Although we haven’t had a chance to try this system out yet, we’re hoping that Nikon CLS features like TTL/Manual and Flash Exposure Compensation settings will be accessible via the camera menu system – especially since a radio-controlled commander with dedicated dials and buttons (like Nissin’s Air 1 system) isn’t available from Nikon. The SB-5000 retains similar optical-control and triggering capabilities as the other advanced Speedlights in the company’s lineup.

Attaching the WR-R10 to your camera should give you full control over up to 18 Speedlights (up to 6 groups) directly from your camera, without the need for any other flashes or commanders attached to your camera. This should be a boon for off-camera flash photography.

This is a significant addition to Nikon’s flash line-up, not only for the radio-triggered control it brings during applications where line-of-sight isn’t feasible or practical, but also because pairing flashes to the WR-R10 is arguably more preferable to pairing to the outdated SU-800 commander (which is so dated that it attaching it to your camera disables Auto ISO). 

Also new for the SB-5000 is a redesigned cooling system promising improved consecutive firing times before cool-downs, and 120 continuous shots at 5-second intervals. Controls are updated with an ‘i’ button for frequently used settings, and the flash head maintains tilt-and-rotate capability.

The Nikon D5 is optimized to work with the newest flagship Speedlight, the SB-5000, illuminating new possibilities in creative lighting. A first for Nikon, the flash operates via radio frequency and will operate without a direct line of sight for a range of up to approx. 98 feet (30 meters). This new-found flexibility lets photographers place lights in different rooms, around corners and work seamlessly in bright ambient light with maximum efficiency. When paired with the WR-R10 and the D5 or the D500, this Speedlight can control up to six groups (A-F) or 18 Speedlights for truly advanced wireless lighting. It is also possible to perform Advanced Wireless Lighting using either radio-controlled (up to three groups) and/or optical-controlled units (up to three groups) by simply attaching a conventional, optical-control Nikon Speedlight or the SU-800 Commander (as a master or commander unit) and a WR-R10 (as a commander) onto the D5.

The new smaller SB-5000 Speedlight also has a radically new design that includes its own internal cooling system, which prevents overheating of the flash panel from consecutive firings. As a result, the SB-5000 can fire consecutively for longer than conventional models, without flash cool-down time between bursts, and can fire up to 120 continuous shots at 5 second intervals. Controls have also been streamlined and refined, with the addition of an “i” button for access to frequently used settings. The design also integrates versatile bounce ability, with the flash head capable of tilting down to -7° or up to 90°, and rotate horizontally 180° to the left and right.
