Prisma update adds in-app filter store

03 Mar

Prisma is a wildly popular iOS and Android app that uses a mix of neural networks, artificial intelligence and cloud-based machine learning to apply a range of filter effects to photos and videos. The resulting images mimic styles of artists such as Munch or Picasso.

However, even though Prisma effects tend to be located at the more interesting end of the filter spectrum, there is a chance you won’t quite find what you are looking for when planning to enhance your images or videos. Thankfully, Prisma is now expanding the number of filters on offer by adding a filter-store to the Android and iOS versions of its app. This addition allows you to download new filters and remove existing ones from your app, creating your personal filter collection. To start with Prisma will add new effects every week, but the plan is to add them daily. At some point there should also be user reviews and filter sharing capabilities.

For now filters in the store are free, but we don’t know if that is going to change at some point in the future. Prisma also says the most active users will get an opportunity to create their own styles and share them with Prisma users on Store but does not specify how exactly this process will work. In any case, giving users the ability to download new style collections and delete unwanted ones should make them come back to the app more frequently.

Facebook takes aim at Snapchat and Prisma with new camera features

28 Oct

If cute animal selfie masks are the wave of the future, then Facebook isn’t going to sit idly by. The company will be updating its in-app camera function with some Snapchat and Prisma style functions soon. It is currently testing a new version that includes animated selfie masks, overlaid graphics, and geofilters, similar to those available on Snapchat, and a range of filter effects that convert your images and videos into fine-art paintings, like on the popular Prisma app.

In addition there is a series of new ‘reactive’ filters that respond to movements of your body. They cover the screen with ‘bubbles’ that can be move around by waving your arms, or line patterns than be disrupted by motion.

Once you have accessed the new camera, filter options can be made visible by swiping down. In addition, you can tap on the new creative tools button for even more effects. The latter include pieces of virtual clothing and fashion accessories and art-filters. And it’s not just the filters that will remind you of Snapchat. Like on Snapchat, photos disappear after a 24 hour period, unless unless someone leaves a comment to start a conversation. The new Facebook camera features are currently being tested in Ireland, but should be expected to roll out globally soon.

Artisto is like the Prisma app, but for videos

05 Aug

Prisma, a machine-learning powered photo app that applies art filters to your images, has been one of the most popular apps in recent weeks, both on Google Play and in the Apple App Store. Its makers have said they are working hard on a version for video, but they may not have not been quick enough. The brand new Artisto app is pretty much a Prisma for video. You can shoot a new video clip or choose one from the gallery, then select a 10 second portion and apply one of the filter options in the style of van Gogh, Picasso or other famous artists to it.

According to the publication Russia Behind the Headlines the app was developed by the Russian company Mail.ru and published under its American brand My.com which is mainly known for its gaming apps. Mail.ru VP Anna Artamonova has posted a sample video, which you can see below, on her Facebook page and the results look interesting. According to Engadget the app is not yet working 100% reliably but produces good looking results. If you want to try yourself you can download Artisto for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play now.

Popular Prisma photo app now available on Android

27 Jul

Just when we thought filter apps were falling by the wayside, along came Prisma – a wildly popular iOS app now available for Android. Prisma uses a mix of neural networks, artificial intelligence and cloud-based machine learning to apply a range of filter effects, mimicking styles of artists such as Munch or Picasso, to your images. Since its launch a month ago for iOS it has become one of the year’s most popular imaging apps.

Until now, Android users had been limited to a buggy beta-version app, but today Prisma Labs, the developers of the app, has finally released the production version on Google Play. As on iOS, the app creates dynamic brush strokes and pencil drawings based on your images. Filters are fine-tunable and the final results can be shared in a variety of ways. Prisma for Android is compatible with devices running version 4.1 or newer of the Google mobile OS and can be downloaded and installed for free from the Google Play Store now.
