01 Aug

LX7-inhand2.jpg

We’ve had a chance to use Panasonic’s latest models, and have prepared previews of the DMC-LX7, DMC-G5 and DMC-FZ200. The LX7 is the company’s latest pocketable enthusiast model, featuring an impressive F1.4-2.3 lens covering a 24-90mm equivalent range. We’ve included a real-world samples gallery, to show how it performs. We’ve also taken a detailed look at the G5, seeing how it compares to the G3 and what its more comprehensive feature set offers for photographers. Finally we look at the most interesting superzoom we’ve seen in quite some time – the DMX-FZ200 – a camera that puts lens brightness (and hence usability) ahead of offering the biggest possible zoom number. Panasonic DMC-GF5 12MP mirrorless camera announced and previewed

09 Apr

panasonic_dmcgf5.png

Panasonic has formally announced the much-discussed DMC-GF5. We’ve had a pre-production GF5 for a couple of days, so we’ve had a look at what’s changed and what the diminutive Micro Four Thirds camera offers to compact camera users looking for better image quality but still wanting the option to simply point and shoot. The 12MP camera is a subtle revision over the GF3, but a higher-res screen, refined user interface and the inclusion of Panasonic’s retractable 14-42mm power zoom lens for a list price of $ 749.99/£579 makes it worth looking at.

Ricoh M-mount GXR Mount A12 module announced and previewed

05 Aug

Ricoh has announced a Leica M-mount unit for its modular GXR camera system. The GXR Mount A12 features a 12MP APS-C CMOS sensor with the ability to fit a wide range of M-mount lenses or a still wider choice if used in combination with an adapter. And, unlike the majority of digital cameras, it features no low-pass (anti-aliasing) filter. The Mount A12 module includes all the usual GXR features (such as toy camera and miniature processing modes), but also gains a silent electronic shutter mode, several manual focus assist options and a series of lens correction parameters. The module will be available from early September, at an MSRP of $ 649. We’ve been using a pre-production Mount A12 module for the past few days and have prepared an hands-on preview with real-world samples.

Olympus PEN Lite and PEN Mini announced and previewed

03 Jul

Alongside the PEN E-P3, Olympus has announced the PEN Lite and PEN Mini. These closely-related sister models (formally called E-PL3 and E-PM1) feature similar specifications but smaller bodies that borrow heavily from the styling of the company’s XZ-1 enthusiast compact. Both cameras are aimed at the point-and-shoot upgrader and feature 460,000 dot LCDs, rather than the E-P3’s OLED display but otherwise retain much of that camera’s capability, including what’s claimed to be the world’s fastest AF. We’ve been using a PEN Lite for a while and have prepared a brief hands-on preview.
