John Stanmeyer wins World Press Photo of the Year

American photographer John Stanmeyer’s image of migrants on the shore of Djibouti city raising their cell phones attempting to capture a signal from neighboring Somalia was named World Press Photo of the Year. The picture also won first prize in the Contemporary Issues category. Stanmeyer of the VII Photo Agency was on assignment for National Geographic when he shot the photograph. Learn more

Enter the 2014 World Press Photo contest

One of the premier photojournalism competitions, the 2014 World Press Photo contest, is now open for entries to professional photographers. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2014 and the winners will be announced on February 14, 2014. The top award, the World Press Photo of the Year, carries a cash prize of €10,000 (~$ 13,764). Learn more

‘Liking Isn’t Helping’ – ad campaign uses jarring press photos to spur action

It’s all very well ‘liking’ a charitable cause on Facebook, but what difference does it make? Crisis Relief Singapore is running an ad campaign called ‘Liking Isn’t Helping’ which uses photos showing victims of war and natural disasters to encourage volunteerism – with an ironic twist. The images are composites of real press photos and Facebook-style thumbs ups, accompanied by the message that ‘Liking isn’t helping’. Click through for more details.

World Press Photo award enables photographer to resume his career

Last October, Portuguese freelance photojournalist Daniel Rodrigues was forced to sell off all his camera gear to pay the bills. Only a few months later, however, one of his images took first prize in the Daily Life category from the prestigious World Press Photo foundation. As a result of the ensuing attention, Rodrigues has been able to acquire new gear and resume his career in photojournalism. (via New York Times Lens blog)

World Press Photo announces 2013 contest winners

Swedish photographer Paul Hansen has won the World Press Photo 2013 award for his picture of a Palestinian family carrying two children who were killed in an Israeli missile strike to their funeral. The World Press Photo Contest 2013 also awarded prizes in eight other categories ranging from Sports to Portraits. Some of these images may be familiar from news coverage throughout the year, but they make a compelling and inspiring reminder of the exceptional level of photojournalism across the world. Click through to check out some of the winning photographs.

Nikon D40x Dies – Error. Press shutter release button again.

So my Nikon D40x decided to die on me while covering an event. Luckily the main pieces of the night were captures by this point. I get a message reading : Error. Press shutter release button again. After several google searches I saw that it means the shutter must be replaced. If anyone has an easy fix, please let me know

The event was held at the former Simon Silk Mill on North 13th street in Easton.. Artist Stephen Antonakos will be the first person to exhibit there.

World Press Photo announces 2012 contest winners

Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda has won the World Press Photo 2011 award. The prize comes for his image of a woman holding a relative wounded during protests against Yemen’s President Saleh. The World Press Photo Contest 2012 also awarded prizes in 18 other categories ranging from Arts and Entertainment to Portraits. Some of these images may be familiar from news coverage throughout the year but they make a compelling and inspiring reminder of the breadth of photography, even within the confines of press usage.
