Ever since getting our hands on a pre-production model of the new Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera, we’ve been very eager to play with the Raw files. Now, our wishes (and maybe yours) have finally come true: click through for a large selection of Raw conversions made using a beta version of Adobe Camera Raw 11.

The Nikon Z 7 is here and we had the chance to shoot around with a pre-production model here in Seattle – you can read all about our first impressions here. Take a look through the gallery above to see JPEG samples representative of much of the camera’s ISO range. We’ll update with full production samples and Raw files as soon as we get out hands on a final unit.

Canon G1 X Mark III pre-production sample gallery

30 Oct

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_6442077554″,”galleryId”:”6442077554″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

The Canon G1 X III isn’t a whole lot bigger than the G5 X, but it hosts a much bigger APS-C sized sensor. Consider its 24-70mm equiv. lens, Dual Pixel AF, built-in EVF and generous dedicated controls and you’ve got a versatile tool that juuuuust fits in your coat pocket. We’ve been shooting with a pre-production model; the JPEG images in this beta gallery have been down-scaled to 90% at Canon’s request.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II pre-production sample gallery

29 Jun

Just shy of its fifth birthday, the Canon EOS 6D was ripe for replacement. Its successor will ship in August, but we had a chance just a few weeks ago to put it to work photographing some of the most stunning landscapes in the US.

Take a look at how the Canon EOS 6D Mark II fared on a recent Canon-organized trip to Yellowstone, and stay tuned for a full gallery once we’re able to get our hands on a full-production model.

pre-production sample gallery

Please note that the samples in this gallery were shot with a pre-production camera. As such, image quality may not be representative of final shipping cameras (although it is likely to be extremely close), and at Canon’s request, Raw files are not available for download.

Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art pre-production sample gallery

01 Mar

The newly announced Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art has the low light shooters on our staff all excited. Super-wide lenses with such fast maximum apertures are rare, and we’ve got high hopes for one with Sigma’s ‘Art’ designation. We jumped all over the chance to take a pre-production version of the lens out for a spin in Yokohama, Japan during CP+ 2017. We’re looking forward to spending more time with the lens, but for now here are some initial samples.

Fujifilm X100F pre-production sample gallery

The Fujifilm X100F is the fourth iteration in the company’s series of compact-yet-capable fixed lens cameras. Though this model carries over the previous iterations’ 23mm (35mm equivalent) F2 lens, the lens takes on new life in front of a 24MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor found in the X-Pro2 and X-T2.

In the span of one weekend, our beta X100F has traveled from the east coast of the United States to the west, from candid street portraits to puppies, and there is an awful lot in between. Enjoy, and keep an eye out for an updated gallery with a full production model in the coming weeks.

Samples shot with a beta X100F, so many not exactly represent final image quality.

All about the details: Hasselblad X1D pre-production samples

07 Jul

At a recent Hasselblad event in London I got some time with the new 50MP Hasselblad X1D mirrorless camera. The bodies are still very much at the pre-production stage, and many of the proposed features that will be available when the camera goes on sale have still to be implemented.

The unit I used didn’t have touch AF activated, so focusing had to be done with the central AF point or manually, and the Nikon-based flash system was not installed. Hasselblad also made it very clear that the AF speed experienced with this camera did not represent what the production models would manage, and that the image quality is still far from finished. The company has however agreed to let us publish some sample shots to allow readers to get an idea of the sort of resolution and colors the camera can achieve.

I shot Raw and JPEG files and processed them through both Adobe Camera Raw and Hasselblad’s own Phocus software. The difference in color, brightness and general quality is quite different between the two applications, and the JPEGs shown here are from Raw files processed in Phocus. The images have been approved by Hasselblad for publication, but they stress that the minor faults found will not be present in images from the production models. Of the twelve images I sent for approval only one was rejected.

As focusing on off-center subjects meant using the central AF point, locking the focus and recomposing, you’ll note that some images have the focus on the farther eye rather than the closer, but I’ve left these in as they still demonstrate other elements of the image quality. In other shots I focused manually and found that the 2.36-million-dot EVF is of excellent assistance and makes finding focus quite easy.

The camera has a large grip but it feels very secure in the hand, and the whole system is comfortable to hold and to use either to the eye or at arm’s length using the live view screen. The operating system will take a while for DSLR owners to get used to, but it matches the system used on the H6D so current Hasselblad customers will feel at home straight away.

I used the Hassleblad XCD 90mm F3.2 lens that delivers an angle of view we’d associate with a 71mm on a 35mm camera system. Shots taken at ISO 200 were lit with broncolor flash heads, and the ISO 400 and 1600 images were exposed with window light and a little tungsten fill.

Editor’s Note: Images have been sharpened to taste in Phocus software. That said, the fact that such high levels of sharpness can be attained with very little image noise cost is a testament to the light-gathering capability of larger, particularly Medium Format, sensors.

Super stable: Panasonic GX85 pre-production sample gallery

21 Apr

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 / GX80 takes just about everything we like about the GX8 and crams it into a body size that’s a lot more in line with the older GX7. In the shrinking process, you lose the high-res tilting viewfinder, the new 20MP sensor and weather sealing. But don’t think you’re getting a bad deal; you gain Panasonic’s Dual-IS feature while recording 4K video (the first camera to do so), you get an updated 16MP chip that now lacks an anti-aliasing filter, and there’s a new JPEG mode dubbed L. Monochrome.

We’ve taken a pre-production GX85 with us around the Puget Sound region with a variety of lenses to see how it measures up.

First shots: Pentax K-1 pre-production sample gallery

18 Feb

After being introduced to the long-awaited Pentax K-1, staff contributors Jordan Stead and Sam Spencer took a quick stroll with the K-1 and a handful of lenses: the recently announced 15-30mm, the 24-70mm and the 70-200mm. As an added bonus, and to our delight, we found the 70mm F2.4’s image circle covers full-frame, so we snapped some samples with it as well. Take a look to see what this pre-production 36MP contender is capable of.
