Sony Mobile has released the first super-slow-motion short movie that has been completely recorded on a smartphone. All of the movie’s scenes were recorded by 120 amateur videographers from 21 countries on the Tróia peninsula near Lisbon, Portugal. The footage was shot under the direction of award-winning director Chris Cairns and using the new Motion Eye mode of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone that is capable of capturing moving images at 960 frames per second.

Drone sales doubled in 2016, premium features help push sales

According to a report by analyst firm The NPD Group, U.S. dollar sales of drones more than doubled in the 12 months ending February 2017. Premium drones, which are defined as drones that cost $ 300 or more, drove a large portion of the growth for most of the year but during the holiday season drones with a price tag between $ 50- $ 100 saw a significant increase in sales as well.
“While 2017 will see mid-tier and entry level drones (priced under $ 300) continue to drive unit demand, new form factors and innovations in sensing and imaging technology will help meet the needs of premium drone buyers,” noted Ben Arnold, executive director, industry analyst for The NPD Group.
When comparing items sold in the $ 300-$ 500 price range, researchers also identified a clear consumer demand for premium features, such as auto pilot capabilities or follow mode functionality. Models offering those features sold considerably quicker than simpler variants.
Drones have clearly left the novelty item stage behind and become a mainstream consumer products. Let’s hope this transition will manifest itself with new and more powerful features, and even more affordable price points in the nearer future.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium features 960 fps slow-motion and 4K display

Sony has today announced two new high-end Android smartphones, the Xperia XZ Premium and the Xperia XZs, which both use a 19MP 1/2.3 image sensor that is based on Sony’s recently announced 3-layer stack technology for smartphones. The camera, which Sony calls Motion Eye, also features a 25mm equivalent lens, F2.0 aperture, laser-assisted AF and an RGBC-IR sensor for natural color rendering. In video mode it can record 4K footage and comes with Sony’s very efficient SteadyShot 5-axis digital stabilization. Sony also says it has improved the panorama mode which is now capable of capturing higher resolution images.
Thanks to the 3-layer sensor’s fast readout times the camera’s highlight feature is a 960 fps slow motion video mode that can record 720p footage. The new sensor technology also reduces the rolling shutter effect in both still images and video. The two new models also the same front camera which comes with a 13MP 1/3.06” sensor and 22mm equivalent focal length.
While the camera looks impressive the Xperia XZ Premium offers the best of the best in all other departments as well. The Android 7.0 operating system is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Images can be viewed and composed on a 5.5” display with 4K resolution that also supports HDR technology. The phone is completely wrapped in Gorilla Glass 5 and waterproof (IP68). The 3,230mAh battery supports Quick Charge and the power button doubles as a fingerprint reader.
The Xperia XZs comes with the same new camera as the XZ Premium but, with a 5.2″ 1080p screen and Snapdragon 820 processor, is otherwise more or less identical to the current XZ. The Xperia XZs will be available early April at approximately $ 700. The XZ Premium will launch later in spring. No pricing information on the higher-end model has been released yet.

Samyang goes Premium with MF lens range

Korean optical manufacturer Samyang has announced a new series of upper-class lenses called Premium MF. The company has released details of a new manual focus 14mm F2.4 wide angle lens and an upgraded version of its popular 85mm lens but with an F1.2 maximum aperture. The models have a very smart-looking redesigned exterior and are finished in aluminum with narrow focusing rings in smooth rubber and an outline reminiscent of the Zeiss Milvus range.
Samyang says that the new optical construction of the lenses produces resolution suitable for 8K video and 50MP still sensors, and new coatings and special elements reduce aberrations to enhance the clarity of the pictures they create.
The 85mm F1.2 uses 10 elements in 7 groups and features a 9-bladed iris and a filter thread of 86mm. The Canon version, which is the only one mentioned at the moment, is set to weigh 1050g. The Premium MF 14mm F2.4 will have 18 elements in 14 groups, and will also have a 9-bladed iris but no filter thread. It is quoted as being available for Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony E cameras and will weigh 791g.
The company has yet to announce prices for these lenses but has said they will go on sale this year. For more information see the Samyang website.

Sony releases three premium ‘G Master’ lenses for FE-mount

Sony has created a new lineup of lenses for its full-frame cameras known as G Master (GM). These are the company’s high-end lenses that sit above its ‘G-series’ lenses and, as you might imagine, command a premium price. The first three GM lenses include FE 24-70mm F2.8, FE 85mm F1.4 and FE 70-200mm F2.8 OSS.
In addition to the lenses, Sony also released a pair of teleconverters (1.4x and 2.0x) for use with the new 70-200mm F2.8 lens.
At the press conference announcing the new lenses the company placed enormous emphasis on the importance of high resolution and high quality bokeh. Says Senior Technology Manager Mark Weir: “Being a leader in image sensor technologies, we have a unique insight into where sensor and camera technology is going, and we put this insight into our lens design.”
Sony mentioned they’re now designing G Master lenses to a 50 lines per mm standard, a step up from the 10 and 30 lines/mm MTF traces we’re used to seeing. Regarding bokeh, Sony explained that the lifelike nature of an image in either still or video is determined by the nature of the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus areas, and that an abrupt shift between the sharp region and the background can look artificial. Their research shows that this often comes down to a lack of precision in the preparation of the lens elements, and less than optimal positioning the optical cavity. Sony indicated that G Master lenses can be shaped to within 1/100th of a micron of their design spec to address this problem. 11 aperture blades on the new 85mm and 70-200mm lenses also indicate a serious commitment to smooth out-of-focus areas.
Additionally, each G Master lens employs a different drive mechanism for optimal AF performance. The 24-70mm uses a Direct Drive Supersonic motor (SSM), which we’ve previously noted to confer incredibly fast, accurate, and silent AF to the FE 35mm F1.4 lens. Sony boasts this focus motor to offer 0.01mm precision of focus group placement. The 85mm F1.4 uses a ring drive. The 70-200 sports a dual implementation: two focus groups at either end of the lens are drive by different actuators. A ring drive SSM drives the front AF group while dual linear motors drive a floating rear group. The result is fast continuous autofocus and silent AF for video, as well as in impressive minimum focus distance of <1m.
Sony also emphasized their development of advanced simulation techniques that make it possible to control things like bokeh right from the design stage. Previously, it was difficult to judge the effects of optical design without first building the lens – simulation technologies now help Sony see the effects of iterations on the optical design.
The first G Master lenses will be available in March, with the 24-70mm listing for $ 2200 and the 85mm listing for $ 1800 in the U.S. The 70-200mm will follow in May, with pricing yet to be determined.

New FE24-70mm F2.8 GM Standard Zoom Lens
Featuring some of the most advanced lens technologies in market today, the new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM (model SEL2470GM) is the ultimate choice for those seeking the highest possible optical performance for portrait, travel and event photography or even simple everyday shooting1.
The new lens is built with three aspherical elements including a newly developed, extremely precise XA (extreme aspherical) element that reduces aberration and delivers the ultimate resolution throughout the entire zoom range and aperture range, as well as from corner to corner of all image files. The lens features a new XA (extreme aspherical) element as well as three ED glass elements that work together to ensure that the in-focus areas are captured in extremely high resolution while the surrounding out-of-focus areas dissolve smoothly into a beautiful soft backdrop. It has a circular aperture with 11 blades – the most ever used in an ? lens – that ensures bokeh is smooth and visually appealing. Externally, the new model has Sony’s original Nano AR Coating, which is of particular importance in a portrait lens as it reduces flare and ghosting, even with backlit subjects or similarly challenging lighting conditions.

The new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM Standard Zoom and 85mm F1.4 GM Telephoto prime lenses will be available in March for about $ 2,200 and $ 1,800, respectively. In Canada, they will be sold for $ 2,900 CA and $ 2,400 CA, respectively.
The new 70-200mm F2.8 GM Telephoto Zoom Lens and its compatible 1.4x and 2x Teleconverters will be available in May. Pricing is not yet available for these models.
The new G Master Series of interchangeable lenses will be sold at a variety of Sony authorized dealers throughout North America.

UHD Alliance sets ‘premium’ standards that could prompt higher-quality 4K cameras

As the industry starts to set quality standards, camera manufacturers may be pushed towards offering higher-quality 10-bit 4K recording. The UHD Alliance, a group made up from leading producers, distributors and device makers has defined the Ultra HD Premium brand that requires certain minimum specifications to be met for content production, streaming and replay.
The most interesting detail is the requirement for 10-bit capture, distribution and playback, meaning cameras must be able to record 10-bit footage to meet the standard. We’re hoping this will mean higher bit-depth recording from 4K-capable cameras to allow their use in productions hoping to carry the Ultra HD Premium branding.
At present, most cameras we encounter can only capture 8-bit files, limiting dynamic range and flexibility at the color grading stage.

The UHD Alliance has developed three specifications to support the next-generation premium home entertainment experience. The three specifications cover the entertainment ecosystem in the following categories:
- Devices (currently, television displays, with other devices under consideration)
- Distribution
- Content

Devices
The UHD Alliance supports various display technologies and consequently, have defined combinations of parameters to ensure a premium experience across a wide range of devices. In order to receive the UHD Alliance Premium Logo, the device must meet or exceed the following specifications:
- Image Resolution: 3840×2160
- Color Bit Depth: 10-bit signal
- Color Palette (Wide Color Gamut)
- Signal Input: BT.2020 color representation
- Display Reproduction: More than 90% of P3 colors
- High Dynamic Range
- SMPTE ST2084 EOTF
- A combination of peak brightness and black level either:
- More than 1000 nits peak brightness and less than 0.05 nits black levelOR
- More than 540 nits peak brightness and less than 0.0005 nits black level
Distribution
Any distribution channel delivering the UHD Alliance content must support
- Image Resolution: 3840×2160
- Color Bit Depth: Minimum 10-bit signal
- Color: BT.2020 color representation
- High Dynamic Range: SMPTE ST2084 EOTF
Content Master
- The UHD Alliance Content Master must meet the following requirements:
- Image Resolution: 3840×2160
- Color Bit Depth: Minimum 10-bit signal
- Color: BT.2020 color representation
- High Dynamic Range: SMPTE ST2084 EOTF
The UHD Alliance recommends the following mastering display specifications:
- Display Reproduction: Minimum 100% of P3 colors
- Peak Brightness: More than 1000 nits
- Black Level: Less than 0.03 nits
The UHD Alliance technical specifications prioritize image quality and recommend support for next-generation audio.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium features first 4K screen on a production smartphone
Sony announced the Xperia Z5 Premium today, boasting a 5.5″ 4K display. It was unveiled alongside the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, and each offers a new 23MP 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor with an F2.0 lens.
