Instagram introduces business profiles with insights, promoted posts and contact button

02 Jun

Instagram has introduced business profiles as a free feature for businesses using the service. Business profiles differ from regular profiles in a few ways, allowing companies or individuals operating as a business to add contact details, promote posts and view insights related to their account.

The new tools are designed to better aid businesses — including individuals operating as a business, such as independent photographers — in managing their Instagram presence while using it to attract new clients. The insights tool shows users how popular individual posts are and provides information on followers, including their demographics and behavior. High-performing posts can now be turned into ads within the Instagram mobile app, as well, and account owners will be able to target specific audiences.

Business profiles also have a contact button that can be connected with a business number or email address, enabling prospective clients to directly contact the company rather than having to seek contact details elsewhere. Instagram plans to rollout business profiles ‘in the coming months’ for users in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. By the end of 2016, business profiles should be available to all users across the globe.

Sony posts significant imaging division income gains in 2015 financial year-end report

03 May

There’s plenty of bad news going around the camera industry lately. Companies once flush with cash from compact camera sales are now struggling to keep sales even. But despite the downward trend on a lot of camera manufacturers’ books, Sony is coming through with some positive numbers. In its latest year-end financial report, the company boasts a 30.4 billion yen increase in operating income for its imaging products division, despite a 1.7% year-on-year decrease in sales.

It’s a familiar story – Sony attributes the gain in income to a more favorable mix of high-value products, no doubt including its full-frame mirrorless line and premium RX-series compacts. Cost-reduction measures are also cited as contributing to the income gains. And though the upward trend is no doubt good for Sony, those numbers aren’t quite as impressive as they seem at first glance. The imaging division’s 2014 figures were hit by significant restructuring charges, bringing down the bottom line by 7.3 billion yen by the end of the year.

Even taking into account last year’s mark-down, Sony has put up some very strong numbers for its imaging products in 2015’s financial year.

InVisage posts short movie shot with its QuantumFilm HDR smartphone sensor

27 Oct

For a few years now, InVisage has been working on a new kind of smartphone image sensor that claims to offer higher dynamic range and zero rolling shutter than the chips currently found in mobile devices. It appears the technology is now at a stage where its benefits can be demonstrated, and for this purpose InVisage has commissioned a short movie called Prix  shot entirely on a prototype device using InVisage’s QuantumFilm technology. Posts With The Most: 12 Cool & Creative Traffic Bollards

Traffic Bollards Leicester 1
Never mind the bollards? Uh-uh: these traffic stoppers halt wayward vehicles like no traffic cone can. The best bollards, though, are designed to look great!

Leicester City Council faced a conundrum in early 2014: children walking to and from Whitehall Primary school were endangered by vehicular road traffic. The street had no sidewalks; only a row of metal traffic bollards. The council’s ingenious solution was to modify the bollards to look like children, many wearing the school’s red uniforms. Kudos to Flickr user KiranParmar for capturing these kinda creepy “Stepford Children” in their native habitat.

Not only do the modified bollards remind drivers to be aware of pedestrians, the scheme is much cheaper than laying down sidewalks. One would hope older ex-students don’t try to re-enact the infamous mailbox scene from the 1993 film Dazed and Confused… a metal bollard beats a wooden baseball bat every time.

Lean Design

Leaning Tower Pisa Traffic Bollard

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and when traffic tilts your traffic bollard, make it look like the Leaning Tower of Pisa of course! Kate McGovern snapped this tilted but still functional bollard somewhere in Philadelphia. Compromised or not, the bollard seems in better shape than the surrounding pavement while providing some unexpected visual interest.

Minions Of Bollards

Who knew the 2010 movie Despicable Me was so popular… in Penang, Malaysia! Located on Soo Hong Lane off Armenian Street in Penang’s inner George Town neighborhood, the charming street art installation was painted by Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic early in 2013 as part of a city-sanctioned campaign to beautify Soo Hong Lane. Unfortunately, Zacharevic had to be recalled to repaint at least one of the not-so-despicable bollards which was defaced – literally – by vandals.

One popular bollard design features a narrowed area near the top to facilitate the attachment of ropes, chains and the like. Coincidentally, these particular bollards bear a cursory resemblance to LEGO men… and a little artistry (plus some yellow paint) enhances the effect even more. The oddly one-eyed LEGO men bollards above come to us courtesy of French street artist Le CyKlop (which explains much) and can be found along the Canal de l’Ourcq in Paris

5 HOT Posts From Our Archives You Would Have Seen if You Were Following us on Facebook

09 Nov

At dPS we have a little problem.

As of this morning dPS has now published 4109 tutorials since we were founded back in 2006!

That’s a lot of photographic learning hidden away in our archives and we’re increasingly aware that many of our readers have not seen some of our most helpful tips and tutorials.

As a result – our team has been coming up with some strategies for highlighting some of the gold in our archives and have begun to experiment with some new ways of sharing it.

How to See the Best Stuff in Our Archives

The most successful experiments so far have been centred around our Facebook page. Over the last few weeks we’e started sharing some of our best content from the past there to those who follow us – and the response has been amazing!

Dps facebook

In the past week alone we’ve had hundreds of thousands of people view, like, share and comment upon these links to old posts and have received a lot of positive feedback about sharing them.

So if you want to explore our archives please Like Our Facebook page.

If you do you’ll see us update around 4 times per day – the updates will be a combination of our new posts and old ones – as well as some fun challenges and discussions.

To get a taste for what you’re missing – here’s the top 5 Facebook posts we’ve done this week:

  • 10 DIY Lighting Hacks for Photographers
  • 15 Tips for Low Light Landscape Photography
  • Get out of Your Photography Rut by Creating Sketches
  • 50 Must Have Wedding Photography Shots
  • 21 Poses for Photographing Kids

Also hot this week was a Facebook only challenge that we ran asking followers to submit a photo on the theme of CUTE.

Following us on Facebook but Not Seeing Our Updates?

Over the last few months Facebook have made changes that mean you don’t always see every post that people and pages you follow make.

If you would like to see all our updates here’s what to do (this should take you 15 seconds at most):

1. Head to our Facebook Page

2. Make sure you’ve clicked our ‘like button’ (it should say ‘liked’ and have a tick next to it).

3. Once you’ve liked us – hover your cursor over the ‘liked’ button until a drop down menu appears (like the one pictured below).

Facebook dps

4. Click the ‘settings’ option and you’ll see an option to choose ‘all updates’ (as you see below). If you select it you’re telling Facebook you want to see all of our updates.

5. You’re done – you should start seeing all our updates (that is if you check Facebook regularly).

PS: we’ve also started featuring some of our new and old posts on our Google Plus page and plan to keep getting more active there too.

Fujifilm has posted firmware version 3.01 for the X-Pro1, which resolves a bug in the recently-released v3.00 that caused movies to be recorded incorrectly under some circumstances. It’s otherwise the same, meaning that it promises faster AF speed, and adds a ‘peaking’ display mode to aid manual focus, compared to prevous versions.
