  • Craigslist poster raises the bar on terrible car photography

A Craigslist post offering a 1990 Mazda RX-7 for sale is going viral today thanks to the photos of the car… and it’s not because they’re good.

For whatever reason, the ad’s author decided the best way to photograph his or her car for this ad was to take pictures of the car with their cell phone, and then take pictures of the pictures displayed on their cracked, hazy smartphone screen.

The original Craigslist post, a link to which hasn’t been shared publicly to avoid disrupting the seller’s efforts, was spotted by Murilee Martin and shared with Autoweek. And yes, the pictures are exactly as bad as described.

The reasoning behind this photographic decision aren’t known and probably never will be. But instead of sharp, colorful, detailed photos of a car what we get are hazy, in some cases out-of-focus shots of a red vehicle that is difficult to make out through the cracks in the screen.

Even by Craigslist standards these are bad. By car photography standards? It’s like something out of a horror film.

  • Film artist explains what’s wrong with new ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ poster

There’s a new Spiderman movie coming out (yes, really – another one) and the most recent poster been generating a lot of comments. Mostly they’re comments about how it looks like the creation of a fevered teenager that just discovered Photoshop.

While the film itself looks like it might not be terrible, the poster is a technicolor mishmash of disparate elements from the movie, thrown together with gleeful disregard for scaling or uniform lighting:

In an interview with The Verge, veteran illustrator Tommy Lee Edwards explains what probably went through the designer’s mind: “Here’s a bunch of references I got from the movie. Let’s put it all together and see how it looks.’ From there, you might be inspired to do a real poster. Instead, they just stopped at that point”.

Well, to be fair, nobody ever said graphic design was easy.

  • WTF Is Street Art? Poster Boy Hacks NYC Sign by High Line

[ By WebUrbanist in Drawing & Digital. ]

    wtf is street art

If you have spent any time along the High Line Park in Chelsea, you will recognize this extremely prominent billboard that one artist had the audacity to climb and hack.

    wtf street art dynamic

The original message (WTF is alternate side of the street parking anyway?) was selectively deleted to make way for a replacement question.

Working at night, Poster Boy risked discovery by people parking and picking up their cars in the directly adjacent lot, not to mention being highly visible from the street.

    high line amphitheater view

During the day, visitors sitting in the over-street theater seats within the elevated park have a direct view of this huge black-on-yellow poster. It is doubtful the change will survive long, so check it out while it lasts!

Known for his creative edits of local signage and hacked infrastructure, Poster Boy has a huge collection of photos you can browse of his work, ranging from small stickers added in unusual contexts to whole-billboard transformations.

  • Wild Horses: The Art of Making a Real 3D Poster

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Wild Horses 3D Paper Sculpture 1

A nearly-life-sized, faceted white paper horse bursting out of a wall in an urban setting can’t fail to grab your attention. Bolder and more dynamic than a two-dimensional poster, this 3D papercraft project by Xavier Barrade from the design firm FOAM promotes the song ‘Horses’ by UK-based band Dry the River.

Wild Horses 3D Paper Sculpture 5

The horses were created in Google Sketchup, then printed, folded and assembled by hand. Each one took about 35 hours to complete. Watch the whole process, from printing to the public’s reaction, in this mesmerizing video.

In cities, where signs and advertisements covering virtually every surface compete for the eyeballs of passersby, posters can be easy to overlook. This installation project doesn’t just draw in curious onlookers, it breaks up the monotony of daily life for pedestrians and integrates some much-needed art into the urban landscape.
