Just Posted: our group test of travel zoom compact cameras. The travel zoom/compact super zoom category is one of the great success stories of recent years, with all the major manufacturers offering at least one small camera with at least a 10x zoom. And that success is understandable – few other camera types offer such a balance between size, price and flexibility. We’ve looked at thirteen of the latest models and narrowed these down to a shortlist of six for the full review treatment. Our 18-page grouptest shows how these six perform in a variety of situations, but all thirteen have both real-world samples and studio comparisons. Click here to find out what we thought and which cameras prevailed.

Just Posted: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 samples gallery

14 Jul

Just Posted: Our AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 G sample gallery. We’ve had access to Nikon’s latest inexpensive 50mm prime lens for a couple of weeks and have put together a 41-image sample gallery to show some of what it can do. The AF-S G version means there’s finally an inexpensive Nikon 50mm lens that will autofocus on the company’s entry-level bodies, such as the D40, D60, D3100 and D5100. Here we’ve shot it using both the DX D7000 and the FX D3S to show how it performs on both formats.

Just posted: Panasonic DMC G3 in-depth review

13 Jul

Just posted: Our in-depth review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3. The G3 is Panasonic’s smallest EVF-equipped G-series camera so far, and also the second highest-resolution in the range. At the core of the G3 is a brand new 15.8MP sensor, making it the first mass-market model to step away from the ageing 12MP chip. Like the G2, it features an articulated, touch-sensitive LCD screen but inherits its interface from the GF2 to make the camera ever-more accessible to beginners. On paper, the G3 is an appealing combination of enthusiast-oriented specification and beginner-friendly ergonomics – read our in-depth review to find out how it performs.

Just posted: Our updated in-depth review of the Fujifilm FinePix X100

04 Jul

Just Posted: our revised Fujifilm X100 review. Amongst the changes listed in Fujifilm’s 1.10 firmware update for the FinePix X100 were several that addressed issues raised in our original in-depth review. To reflect this, we have gone back into the studio and re-tested the X100 to see just how much difference the changes make. Does the update allow the X100 to achieve its obvious potential as a high-quality luxury compact camera, or is it still too quirky to earn our outright recommendation? Read our extensively updated review to find out.

Just Posted: Our review of the Sony DSLR-A580

28 May

Just Posted: Our review of the Sony DSLR A580. With all the progress Sony has been making with its mirrorless and ‘translucent’ mirror technologies, it’s easy to overlook the company’s continued development of its two-sensor liveview DSLRs. The A580 is the latest (and possibly last?) in a line that started with the promising but quirky A350. The A550 was a big step forwards for these feature-packed enthusiast DSLRs and the A580 takes this progress further with the addition of Sony’s excellent 16MP sensor. Offering all the usual Sony processing cleverness – such as sweep panorama, in-camera HDR and multi-shot noise reduction – the only apparent cloud in its sky is the existence of the less expensive, full-time liveview sister model, the SLT A55. So, with an in-house competitor threatening to steal the A580’s liveview crown, can its more conventional DSLR design offer the best of both worlds?

Just posted: Our in-depth Fujifilm X100 review

18 May

Just Posted: Our in-depth Fujifilm X100 review. The X100 has been an object of fascination and desire amongst photography enthusiasts since it was unveiled at Photokina last September. The camera marries elegant retro looks with an advanced viewfinder and a well-respected sensor. A 35mm equivalent F2 lens completes this modern interpretation of the classic fixed-lens rangefinder concept. However, despite the undeniable attraction of the camera, it won’t come as shocking news to hear that it’s not an unqualified success. As a result, we’ve taken a little longer than usual over our review, partly because it’s a camera that requires some time to really appreciate it. Mainly though, we wanted to rigorously assess which drawbacks prove to be truely significant after extensive real-life use, and which ones you can be charmed into forgiving.

Just Posted: Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D in-depth review

01 Apr

Just Posted: Our review of the Canon Rebel T3i / EOS 600D enthusiast DSLR. Canon’s latest Rebel boasts an 18MP CMOS sensor and an articulated LCD screen in a body shell that combines elements of its predecessor the T2i and the higher-end EOS 60D. As well as the usual complement of manual and auto exposure modes for still photography, the T3i also features 1080p video recording (up to 30fps) with an external microphone socket. On paper, the T3i looks like a bargain – the 60D’s internals in a smaller, less expensive body. Is there any reason to still consider its big brother? Read our in-depth review to find out.

Just Posted: Our full review of the Pentax K-r upper entry-level DSLR. When we reviewed the Pentax K-x in December 2009 we thought it was a little cracker. The K-r builds on this by adding visible AF points, a higher ISO range and faster continuous shooting to the K-x’s already successful feature mix but the competition has not been standing still. Click on the link to read how the Pentax K-r fared in our studio tests and how it stacks up to its latest peers in the upper entry-level bracket of the market.

Just posted: Olympus XZ-1 review

27 Jan

Just Posted: Our review of the Olympus XZ-1. The company’s latest enthusiast compact represents its return to the top end of the compact camera market. The impressive set of features builds around a 28-122mm equiv. F1.8-2.5 lens and includes a 3.0″ VGA-equivalent OLED screen, high-sensitivity 10MP CCD sensor and dual control dials. The XZ-1 enters a competitive segment of the market but its specifications suggest it can hold its own. Does use in the real-world support that impression?
