Pop-Up Apartments: Post-Disaster Housing Prototype for NYC

28 Jun

[ By Steph in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

Pop Up Disaster Apartments Main

New York City residents could have a stylish and safe place to live in less than 15 hours after a catastrophic natural or manmade disaster with these modular ‘pop-up’ apartments. Developed by Garrison Architects for the NYC Office of Emergency Management, the Urban Post Disaster Housing Prototype makes it easy to create compact multi-story, multi-family dwellings on demand.

Pop Up Disaster Apartments 2

Each individual unit is self-contained and can host families of various sizes, expanding from a one bedroom up to a three bedroom. Prefabricated in Indiana, the units also feature a living room, bathroom, fully-equipped kitchen, storage space and balcony. Multiple units can be stacked vertically or set side-by-side in a variety of urban settings, from vacant lots to public spaces.

Pop Up Disaster Apartments 5

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy made it clear that fast, safe, durable housing is critical once the immediate danger of a disaster has passed. The result of over 6 years of research into emergency housing by by the City of New York, this design allows residents to remain in their communities instead of being whisked away to shelters for months at a time.

Pop Up Disaster Apartments 6

The units were designed to meet the strictest zoning requirements in the United States so they can be quickly deployed to any location in the country within hours. A total of 5 modules were created for the prototype, which will remain on the corner of Cadman Plaza East and Red Cross Place for up to two years. Guests will be invited to stay in the units for five-day intervals to see just how comfortable these housing units can be.

Pop-Up Portfolio: Mobile Furniture Folds Flat Between Pages

12 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

flat pack furniture set

It is not unusual to see art and design students walking around with portfolios under their arms, but few open up to reveal such creative results as these.

Inspired by campus folder cases, origami and pop-up books, Japanese designer Mariko Tsujimoto created this series of unfolding furnishings that deploy into surprisingly solid (if small) functional objects.

Set in vivid colors to distinguish their functionality, the set includes a chair, table, desk and bookshelf, each of which refolds automatically when the end pages are closed.

These quite literal portfolio pieces are just plastic prototypes for now, but rendered in a more solid material they could provide the conceptual groundwork for a full-fledged furnishing set.

Pop-Up Parks: Brackets Turn Scaffolding into Furniture

25 Feb

[ By Steph in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Softwalks Pop Up Scaffolding Park 1

Scaffolding is ugly, and steals valuable sidewalk space from city residents – but with a simple kit of parts that fit onto the frame with brackets, it transforms into an instant pop-up park. The Kit of Parts by Softwalks includes fold-up chairs, planters, counters, light reflectors and decorative screens that snap right onto scaffolding to create impromptu public spaces that encourage congregation and conversation.

Softwalks Pop Up Scaffolding Park 2

Inspired by the interaction with urban environments that’s fostered by sidewalk cafes and by the sturdiness and ubiquity of scaffolding (or ‘sidewalk sheds’), the designers came up with a few essential components that make for a comfortable resting place. Leaving scaffolding up for long periods of time can have a negative effect on businesses, communities and sidewalk culture, and Softwalks saw an opportunity to change that.

Softwalks Pop Up Scaffolding Park 4

The pop-up park kit can’t be ordered by just anyone, and there’s a reason for that: the designers don’t want people potentially interfering with active construction sites in a dangerous way. But lots of scaffolding is ‘passive.’ The Softwalks team found that in New York City, when businesses fail the mandatory 5-year facade inspection, they sometimes leave scaffolding up for a long time to avoid having to do expensive repairs. In one case, scaffolding remained in place for 12 years.

The design team identified an ideal site to install the parts for the pilot project, ensuring that there was plenty of room for pedestrians, and plan to make the kit available to cities for use at special events, street festivals and for temporary installations.

Colorful Pop-Up: City Farm Storefront for Produce & Plants

27 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

pop up green shop

This competition-winning design uses upcycled materials to frame a street-facing  experience, in part through a fresh take on ‘window shopping’. Its aim: to create a unique and sustainable experience for Londoners looking to purchase fruit- or vegetable-producing plants.

Sponsored by Hackney City Farm, the competition encouraged applicants to reuse materials and strive for sustainability, but this group set themselves apart by proposing something both contextual and eye-catching with a strong pedestrian-side presence.

The team behind this colorfully-painted Sill-to-Sill solution drew inspiration, as well as many of their actual materials, “from the architecture of the local neighbourhood, defined by streets of Victorian terrace houses with their imposing brick facades and generous sash windows. In recent years these homes have been bought up in a wave of gentrification and as new owners move, builders get to work, improvements are made and old materials are discarded.”

Alongside recycled slats used for the walls, these found window elements were turned into benches, counters, shelves, notice boards and sources of natural light, most prominently used as a colorful display that draws people in from the sidewalk to see their wares. “‘Sill to Sill’ aims to encourage local people to take up urban agriculture by presenting plants in an immediately familiar setting: ‘buy from our window sill and grow on your window sill’.”

Part of the approach also involved using strategies that would allow for easier construction despite apparent architectural complexity: “Though visually sophisticated, the design utilized basic timber construction techniques and simple materials in a manner that could easily be assembled by a team of unskilled volunteers. Community involvement at every stage of the project, from inception through construction and on to use, was at the core of the team’s proposal.”

Sleeping Around: Pop-Up Hotel in a Shipping Container

11 Apr

[ By Steph in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

Sleeping Around Hotel 1

Do you want to spend a night on a river bank, a cliff, a meadow or a busy urban street? The ‘Sleeping Around’ pop-up hotel concept can go virtually anywhere you like, setting up quickly in locations where static architecture isn’t possible or practical. Made from four recycled 1950s shipping containers, this traveling hotel opens up possibilities for travelers who want more than just a night of comfort.

Sleeping Around hotel 2

Sleeping Around consists of six shipping containers – four are individual hotel rooms, one serves as a sauna and the sixth is a breakfast and lounge area. Each of the hotel rooms has a floating bed, spacious rain shower, iPod docking station and air conditioning system.

Sleeping Around Hotel 3

The hotel has already spent a few weeks on the banks of the Scheldt in Antwerp, where the containers were procured, and is now on the move. Travelers interested in staying there can track its location on the website, and put in requests for future spots. It can be set up and ready to go within five hours of arriving.

Sleeping Around Hotel 4
This hotel may not be quite as mobile as the super-compact Hotello, which is basically a self-contained hotel room setup in a wheeled trunk, but it opens intriguing possibilities for the future of travel accommodations. If you could choose any location to set up a temporary hotel, where would it be?

3D Video – A BOLT Pop-Up Book [With or Without Glasses]

02 Nov

HOW TO VIEW IN 3D: 23 August 2010 Update: Please note that the 3D menu is now embeded into the new YouTube player. Just mouse over the button labeled “3D” and the menu will pop up. Click on the “3D View Style” menu then select how you’d like to view. You can only see this menu on the video page itself and not on a channel page. You can get out your 3D glasses and choose “Red/Cyan” which are pretty common. If you don’t have glasses, then select “Cross-eyed” or “Parallel” and cross you eyes slightly or focus behind the screen to make the 2 videos overlap into 1. If you’re not able to overlap images with your eyes, you may want to just purchase a cheap pair of glasses somewhere online or buy a 3D movie from the store and use those glasses. Don’t forget to click the full screen button on the bottom right of the video player if you are viewing with glasses. It looks and pops out way more awesome. Sorry, Disney’s fancy RealD polarized glasses don’t work here on YouTube. IF THIS DOESN’T WORK FOR YOU: – Cross-eyed or Parallel viewing can be difficult if you don’t have control over your eye muscles. Try sitting away from the screen a bit or just get some practicing. There are a lot of cool videos like this on the net and tutorials on how to view 3D without glasses. If you still can’t get it right, maybe you’ve made the wrong selection for “Parallel” or “Cross-eyed”. – If you’re using glasses and the image seems to be inside out or not working at all, then use your glasses the
