Facial Reconstruction: Police Use Found DNA to Create Suspect Profiles

dna-face-arts

An art project launched four years ago illustrated how scraps of DNA found in public could be turned into eerily lifelike composite sketches and three-dimensional models — now the police appear to be taking that technology in new (and potentially disturbing) direction.

Heather Dewey-Hagborg collected strands of hair, discarded cigarettes, chewing gum and other found materials and worked them into hauntingly realistic masks as part of Stranger Visions in 2012. But her resulting sculptures were at best approximate — DNA can only tell you so much about what a person looks like. Such limitations are stopping law enforcement agencies, however, from pushing the limits of the technology.

genetic-finds

Companies like Parabon NanoLabs that specialize in DNA phenotyping, however, are working with the Department of Defense and other agencies to use similar approaches. Their Snapshot technology references databases that pair genetic information with physical traits. Agencies can thus send in DNA and get back a genetic profile or even a composite sketch.

found-dna-faces

Used as a means of eliminating suspects from the pool or identifying remains, this technology could be fine. However, since it can’t tell weight, age and other features (even race can be ambiguous), it is also possible that such renderings would mislead investigators — or worse: influence trials in the wrong direction. Photo-realistic images and models have a way of skewing the perceptions of the observer — once seen they are hard to unsee.

faced

“Ancestry becomes a sort of short-cut term for race,” Dewey-Hagborg worries. “When it’s a person reading their own genealogical information, they’re going to look at that in light of what they know about their own personal history. But when it gets into the hands of the police, that all gets thrown out the window, because there is no self-knowing subject there.” Advocates of the technology point out that these is not how they intend it to be used — but still, in comparing it to data gathered from eyewitness accounts or surveillance cameras, they risk going in that direction anyway.

More from the artist about Stranger Visions: she “creates portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material collected in public places. Working with the traces strangers unwittingly leave behind, Dewey-Hagborg calls attention to the developing technology of forensic DNA phenotyping and the potential for a culture of biological surveillance. Designed as an exploratory project based on emerging science, the forecast of Stranger Visions has proved prescient.”

Mild Max: Perth Police Put a Stop to Motorized Picnic Tables

04 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

mobile motorized picnic tables

In what could be viewed as a pre-apocalyptic take on hacked vehicular hybrids of the Mad Max movies, a pair of picnic table cars have been spotted on the streets of Western Australia’s capital city.

These road-worthy cruisers can apparently reach speeds of 50 kilometers per hour, handling like go-karts with bonus table space for passengers to set down their beers.

Cops put out alerts on the vehicles based on CCTV footage and eventually spotted them as they stopped to fuel up at a gas station.

“They told the boys that were drinking to tip their liquor out and get rid of it which we did and they said we’re not allowed to drive [the picnic tables] on the road and just to push them back across the other side of the road and then we can carry on from there.”

Inspired by a friend who constructs similar creations in New Zealand, the tables’ owner and builder explained that each model is constructed with a four-speed clutch, gears, accelerator and brakes. Police are still evaluating their presumably-illegal road usage, with potential penalties or fines yet to come, though all appears to have been in good fun.

Colorado proposes bill supporting photographers who record police

07 Apr

Colorado, U.S. state legislatures have introduced a new bill that, if signed into law, will prevent law enforcement officers from interfering with citizens who are photographing or recording police activity. It is House Bill 15-1290, and it comes at a time when Texas has proposed its own bill on the topic, but with a draconian slant: it penalizes citizens that film or photograph police actions within 15 feet of the incident. Read more

How the Shot was Done: SNK Police Cosplay

23 Jan

Cosplay-shoot-first-shot

I do a lot of cosplay (short for costume play) photography with friends, and I was asked by some to do a cosplay crossover photo shot (Shingeki no Kyojin / Psycho Pass) with them. They sent me some reference shots from which I decided to create a slightly futuristic, detective movie kind of look. I also thought I’d experiment with shooting to fit a wide movie crop to suit the look of the shoot. In this article I’ll show you how I set up, shot and processed two photos from the shoot, including the one above. If you’d like to see more photos from the shoot, you can do so here.

So on to how the shot was done . . .

The right location

Our location for the shoot was the rear of Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia. It’s a futuristic looking building with lots of metal, glass and interesting angles in its construction. For the shot above I wanted to take advantage of these textures to accentuate the futuristic look, so we first went to the alcove depicted below in this behind the scenes photo.

Lighting the shot

It was dusk so there was little light getting into the alcove from what became camera left. I wanted to keep that light in the shot as a fill, but my key light was going to be a ring flash – my Orbis ring flash. This kind of light gives a dramatic look with almost no shadow. It’s stark and flat but works well with this kind of scene. In my first test shot I noticed a fantastic unexpected effect of the brushed metal backdrop: anistropic reflection. This created a bright diagonal streak across the back of the shot.

To get the right balance of fill to key, I set the camera to 1/125sec f/2.8 ISO160 and adjusted the power on the flash to get the right brightness for the shot. This ended up being towards the bottom end of the flash power. Following is a lighting diagram and the photo as it came out of camera:

Processing the image

In post processing the major changes I made were to increase the contrast and clarity, as well as a significant temperature move towards blue, and tint shift to green. With a movie aspect ratio crop and heavy vignette, plus a few small tweaks to the exposure settings, I ended up with this final photo (below).

The second location shoot

I love the self-conscious, melodramatic, slow motion walking scenes in movies, and these guys’ outfits were perfect for a shot like that. I wanted to keep a consistent look with the first shot, but give this one its own twist. To do this I took the group out into an area with more space and a cool geometric glass patterned wall as the backdrop. I added a pair of flashes behind the group for some rim lighting, but I deliberately chose to keep them in view for some dramatic lens flares. I replaced the ring flash with an on-camera flash and balanced that to be under the exposure from the rim lighting. This gave me a low key dramatic look (drama was the theme of the night!). Again I set the camera exposure to just give a hint of the background – 1/40sec f/4.5 ISO500 – and dialed the power of the flash to get the balance I was after.

Rather than try and pose the shot, which would look too forced, I got them into a staggered starting position and simply asked them all to walk toward the camera. To get them in an appropriate mood and make them feel badass, I played this tune (which I consider to be the best slow walking music ever) on my phone and it totally did the trick.

Following is a lighting diagram and the photo straight out of the camera.

I processed this photo in essentially the same way as the previous shot, to get a consistent look and feel between it and the rest of the photos in the shoot. Please visit this gallery to see all the images at a decent size.

Cosplay-shoot-second-shot

I really love cosplay photography because I get to go crazy and pull out all the creative stops, to make over the top photos, that suit the over the top characters and plot from anime. I’m fortunate to have fun, creative and energetic friends to work with to create these shots. If you’d like to see more of my cosplay and other photo shoots, you should like my Facebook page where I post photos regularly, and occasionally discuss how they were made.

Which of the two shots is your favourite, and why?

Models featured in these photos:

  • Jase Lube-Sama
  • KnRai
  • Kobito Cosplay

Case Closed: 12 Locked Down Abandoned Police Stations

10 Mar

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned police stations
These unlocked, unloaded and unmanned abandoned police stations suggest that when the long arm of the law is crippled, the end of society must be nigh.

Detroit Lock City

No collection of urban abandonments would be complete without something from America’s all-star urban apocalypse in the making, Detroit, so let’s get right to it. The old Highland Park Police Station just off Woodward Avenue was closed in 2007 when the re-formed police department moved to a new location. It didn’t take long before looters and vandals broke in to do that voodoo that they do so well.

The City of Highland Park‘s motto is “Return to Excellence” but when it comes to the old Highland Park Police headquarters, looking back is not an option. There’s nothing to look forward to either, as the building was put out of its misery (aka demolished) in January of 2012.

A Tree Grows In Brook, er, Venaria Reale

Venaria Reale abandoned police station(images via: [im]possible living)

Or grows out as the case may be, and in this case the tree is growing inside a police station in Venaria Reale, Italy. In the absence of any restraining officers, the tree’s branches have escaped the undoubtedly dim and dank interior into the fresh air and warm sunlight.

Putin Jail

Tver Russia abandoned police station(images via: Xaxor)

This abandoned police station in Russia’s Tver region was active until 2006 if the moldering calendars on its peeling walls can be believed. The station’s decline parallels that of Tver, a thousand-year-old city whose population has dropped more than 10 percent since 1989.

Is that a young Josef Stalin peeking out from the files, or does this person of interest simply reflect Uncle Joe’s legacy of Russian style and fashion? Regardless, Li’l Stalin gets off easy this time along with his fellow filemates in the moldering Tver police station. That’s some darned fine police work there, Lubyanka.
