Pixel Performers: Digital Projection Mapping on Live Dancers

pixel stage dangers performers

Combining choreographed movement and projected abstractions, these works of performed art are visually stunning, creating effects and illusions far beyond the sum of their parts.

pixelated performance art

From its creators, Pixel, shown above, “is a dance show for 11 dancers in a virtual and living visual environement. A work on illusion combining energy and poetry, fiction and technical achievement, hip hop and circus. A show at the crossroads of arts and at the crossroads of Adrien M / Claire B’s and Mourad Merzouki’s universes.”

The idea of projecting onto moving performers is, however, not new – indeed, Klaus Obermaier has been using low-tech projectors and equipment to create equally amazing work for decades. Indeed, while speaking at INST-INT recently in Minneapolis, he joked that he would carry on using his decade-old laptop until it broke down.

Indeed, the lower-tech approach he takes relies heavily on the ability of each dancer to have complete control of their own movements, making their skill a critical part of each and every exhausting performance.

Obermaier has also engaged in other forms of public interactive projection art over the years, taking his productions off the stage and allowing passers by to interact with his work.

Canon offers Dual Pixel AF upgrade for Cinema EOS C100 camera

06 Nov

eos-c100.png

Canon is offering owners of its Cinema EOS C100 the chance to add Dual Pixel AF to this video-centric camera. This will enable continuous autofocus during recording with all Canon EF lenses, and double one-shot AF speed with 104 fully-supported lenses. Interestingly the upgrade doesn’t involve a change of sensor, but instead enables a hitherto-unused hardware capability. However it will require the camera to be sent to a Canon service centre, and in the US will cost $ 500.

Stand Up Paddling with Pixel, the Water Corgi

14 Oct

Pixel, the Corgi, grew up with Dax, the Newfoundland, and he believes that he is a water dog. He was my paddling companion in many trips taken in Sea Wind canoe. We paddled together all local lakes and several rivers including South and North Platte, Dismal, and Niobrara.

A year ago I started stand up paddling and Pixel is paddling with me on calmer lakes. He likes to ride on a stern or on a bow. Badfish SUP, a stable, whitewater board is not a challenge for him. However, a narrower and slippery Bark Expedition SUP may be more tricky and Pixel took some swims.

I’ve got a life jacket for him and we will certainly try it since water is getting cold.

DxOMark has tested the Canon EOS 70D’s live view autofocus system in comparison to the Sony SLT-A77, looking at focus speeds and accuracy in both movie and stills modes. The two cameras offer an intriguing contrast in technologies; the 70D uses Canon’s latest ‘Dual Pixel AF’ on-sensor phase detection, while the A77 employs a separate phase detection AF sensor which receives light via a semi-transparent mirror. Click through to see how the two cameras fare in DxOMark’s head-to-head testing.
