VILVOORDE, BELGIUM – I believe that a professional photographer needs to do some personal work from time to time to stay fresh and keep learning. After we finished the pictures in the “2020” series, we were joined by pro model Sylvianne for some fun and improvisation. We tried out some different lighting setups. For me as a professional photographer these experiments are very valuable. Known for her hauntingly still imagery, photographer Lisa Kereszi’s subjects have included junkyards, burlesque clubs and other desolate sites. Her commercial work for clients such as The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Nest, W, GQ, Tokion, Penthouse, Nylon, Flaunt, wallpaper* and others shares a similarly serenely meditative quality, capturing the quiet beauty of scenes that would otherwise likely go unnoticed. Currently teaching at Yale, as well as continuing her fine art and commercial pursuits, Lisa took us on a trip to revisit the shots she took at Governors Island for a 2003 monograph on the former military base. We found several of the sites she captured, including a bus stop, an elementary school drinking fountain, bowling alley lanes and a Burger King sign. In an interview in an empty pool, Lisa shares how a mild depressive bent informs her work, her solitary working habits and her obsession with Governors Island. Video Rating: 4 / 5

Philip Glass dedicated album “Photographer” (1983) to Eadweard Muybridge. Eadweard Muybridge (April 9, 1830 May 8, 1904) was a British-born photographer, known primarily for his early use of multiple cameras to capture motion. Muybridge was born Edward James Muggeridge at Kingston-on-Thames, England. He is believed to have changed his first name to match that of King Eadweard as shown on the plinth of the Kingston coronation stone, which was re-erected in Kingston in 1850. Muggeridge became Muygridge and then Muybridge after he had emigrated to America. Muybridge started his career as a publisher’s agent and bookseller, but developed an interest in photography that seems to have been boosted when he was recovering in England after nearly being killed in a stagecoach crash. It has been suggested that he acted as an assistant to landscape photographer Carleton E. Watkins, but there is little evidence of this. Muybridge began to build his reputation in 1867 with photos of Yosemite and San Francisco (many of the Yosemite photographs reproduced the same scenes taken by Watkins). Muybridge quickly became famous for his landscape photographs, which showed the grandeur and expansiveness of the West. The images were published under the pseudonym Helios. In 1872, businessman and former California governor Leland Stanford hired Muybridge to settle a question (not a bet, as is popularly believed): Stanford claimed, contrary to popular belief, that there was a point in a horse’s full … Video Rating: 4 / 5

VILVOORDE, BELGIUM – I believe that a professional photographer needs to do some personal work from time to time to stay fresh and keep learning. Almost 100 years old, Lester Hayes was a pioneer of Abstract Photography. He took photographs of ordinary things, using a sheet of mylar plastic shimmering in the breeze, to produce stunning images, and he did it all with the brand new Kodak Instamatic. Kodak awarded his ingenuity with a major one man exhibition in New York City, but became disinchanted when Hayes discovered a tiny flaw in the camera that ultimately contributed to its demise. Man held in police station for eight hours after taking pictures of Christmas celebrations in Accrington, Lancashire. Police questioned an amateur photographer under anti-terrorist legislation and later arrested him, claiming pictures he was taking in a Lancashire town were “suspicious” and constituted “antisocial behaviour”. Footage recorded on a video camera by Bob Patefield, a former paramedic, shows how police approached him and a fellow photography enthusiast in Accrington town centre. They were told they were being questioned under the Terrorism Act. Senior police officers last year promised to scale back the use of anti-terrorist legislation such as Section 44 of the act, which deals with photographers, after a series of high-profile cases in which photographers said they had been harassed by police for taking innocuous images in the street. Patefield and his friend declined to give their details, as they are entitled to under the act. The police then appeared to change tack, saying the way the men were taking images constituted “antisocial behaviour”. Patefield, who is in his 40s, was stopped three times before finally being arrested. He and his friend were taking photographs of Christmas festivities on 19 December, after attending a photography exhibition. The last images on his camera before he was stopped show a picture of a Santa Claus, people in fancy dress and a pipe band marching through the town. He turned on his video camera the moment he was approached …
