  • Atomos releases full Ninja V firmware update for recording 5.9K 12-bit ProRes Raw with Panasonic S1H

    Atomos has announced the full firmware update for its Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables 5.9K ProRes Raw video capture from a Panasonic S1H.

    It’s been just one week since the pre-release beta firmware was released alongside Panasonic’s S1H 2.1 firmware update, but the full version is up and ready to go. The full firmware update enables Ninja V units to record 12-bit ProRes Raw video over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. Also new is a 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode that makes it easier to record footage shot on anamorphic lenses.

    To accompany the new recording options, Panasonic has released a new LUT that can be downloaded for free on its website. The Atomos Ninja V firmware update (AtomOS 10.52) can be downloaded from the Ninja V product page, under the ‘Support’ tab.

    Atomos releases full free Ninja V update to enable 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW recording for the Panasonic LUMIX S1H

    August 7, Melbourne, Australia: Atomos is thrilled to announce the dream of ultra-high resolution RAW video from a full-frame mirrorless camera is now a reality. Last week Atomos launched a Pre-Release Beta for Ninja V users to try out on their Panasonic LUMIX S1H. Today Atomos announces the full firmware update for the Ninja V.

    From today Ninja V & Panasonic LUMIX S1H users will be able to record:

    Simply stunning 12-bit RAW

    The Ninja V captures the unprocessed highly detailed 12-bit RAW signal files directly from the full frame sensor of the S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail from the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.

    Anamorphic RAW

    More and more cinematographers are now choosing to shoot with anamorphic lenses and the Ninja V and S1H combination caters to them with the new 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode. An even bigger world of cinematic opportunities opens up as the Ninja V and S1H can now be used as an A-camera or smaller B-camera on an anamorphic RAW production.

    Improved color pipeline

    LUMIX S1H ProRes RAW files recorded to the Ninja V can now benefit from an improved color pipeline in Apple Final Cut Pro X. Panasonic have published a new LUT based workflow that allows the enhanced potential of ProRes RAW files captured from the LUMIX S1H to be realised in the NLE software.

    Ninja V advantage

    The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple when the camera is attached with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the RAW image accurately in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing them to perfect their RAW video. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

    ProRes RAW the new standard

    In addition to their ground-breaking combination of flexibility and performance, Apple ProRes RAW files are smaller than other RAW files – simplifying and accelerating file transfer, media management, and archiving. Even with the new higher 5.9K resolution, ProRes RAW files from the S1H can easily be edited on most modern Macs. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.

    This is available immediately; Ninja V users can download the free AtomOS update for their monitor-recorder directly from the Atomos website.

  • Raw video output for Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H now available

    Panasonic has announced firmware version 2.1 for the Lumix DC-S1H. Originally slated for a May launch, this firmware adds support for Raw video output to Atomos Ninja V external recorders, which in turn can save the footage as ProRes Raw. The maximum output resolutions are 5.9K/29.97p from the full sensor region and 4K/59.94p from a Super 35 crop. A LUT will be made available for the Ninja V to match V-Log and V-Gamut on the S1H and other Panasonic video cameras.

    In addition to Raw export, the firmware update also gives the S1H the ability to capture 3.5K anamorphic from a Super 35 4:3 region.

    The update is available free of charge and can be downloaded from Panasonic’s website.

    Panasonic Releases Firmware Version 2.1 for LUMIX S1H Supporting RAW Video Data Output

  • Panasonic announces minor firmware updates for 6 cameras, release of macOS streaming utility and more

    Panasonic has announced minor firmware updates for half-a-dozen of its G Series mirrorless cameras and announced the upcoming release of new software for Windows and macOS computers that will give its mirrorless cameras the ability to be used as a webcam without the need for a capture card.

    The firmware updates are for Panasonic’s GH5, GH5S, G9, G95, G85 and GX9 camera systems. The respective updates improve compatibility with Panasonic’s new Tripod Grip DMW-SHGR1 and add ‘operational stability’ with the LUMIX G VARIO 12–32mm / F3.5–5.6 lens. The new firmware updates will go live on Panasonic’s support page on July 21.

    Panasonic has also announced the release of LUMIX Streaming (Beta) for macOS. Like the Windows version released back on June 9, the macOS version allows select Panasonic mirrorless cameras to be used as webcams through a derivative version of Panasonic’s LUMIX Tether utility that removes unnecessary interface elements to create a clean output for using as a webcam feed.

    At this time, the LUMIX Streaming (Beta) supports Panasonic’s S1H, S1R, S1, GH5S, GH5 and G9 mirrorless cameras. It requires at least macOS 10.11 (El Capitan), 2GB of RAM for 64-bit systems and 200MB of space. You can download the utility for free on Panasonic’s website.

    Beyond the LUMIX Streaming (Beta) for macOS and Windows, Panasonic is also developing LUMIX Webcam Software. Unlike LUMIX Streaming (Beta), which is effectively a tweaked version of its tethering utility, LUMIX Webcam Software ‘[will make] it possible to use an applicable LUMIX camera as a webcam over a USB connection not only for live streaming, but also for video conferencing, etc.’ Panasonic says the software will be compatible with its S1H, S1R, S1, GH5S, GH5, and G9 camera systems, and is due for a September release on Windows and an October release for macOS.

    2. LUMIX Streaming (Beta) for Mac

    Followed by the release of “LUMIX Streaming (Beta)” for Windows, the “LUMIX Streaming (Beta)” for Mac has also been released. It is derived from conventional “LUMIX Tether (Ver.1.7)” with an additional display option for the cases where this software is used for live streaming purposes. It may help user convenience in the growing self-streaming opportunities.

    As “LUMIX Tether” is a software program originally designed for tethered shooting, GUIs such as a focus area mark as well as control panels are displayed with live view images on the PC monitor during USB tethering. However, these graphic items become a hindrance when the software is used to capture camera view for live streaming. In response to the demands of customers to resolve this issue, LIVE VIEW mode has been added on “LUMIX Streaming (Beta)”. It enables displaying camera view only, making it easy for the separate streaming software to read it. Users can choose to show or hide these graphic items during USB tethering according to the usage purpose.

    “LUMIX Streaming (Beta)” is provided as a pre-release version that is currently still under development. Please note that this software is not eligible for operation warranty and customer support.

  • Panasonic announces vlogging-friendly Lumix DC-G100/G110

    Panasonic has introduced the Lumix DC-G100 (known as the G110 in some regions), a compact Micro Four Thirds camera targeted toward vloggers. To this end, it features a fully articulating (and very bright) touchscreen, easily visible record button, directional microphones with subject tracking and a number of other details.

    While it uses the same 20MP Four Thirds sensor as many other Panasonic cameras, the G100 does not have in-body image stabilization. There is a ‘hybrid’ 5-axis IS system when recording video (4-axis for 4K), though it does add a noticeable crop. The 3″ LCD display is very bright and easy to see outdoors and it’s paired with a 3.68 million dots (equivalent) viewfinder. Is a field sequential EVF but Panasonic says it refreshes four times faster than, for less “color tearing”.

    Video can be captured at 4K/30p and 24p for up to 10 minutes. There is a crop in 4K, made even larger when using image stabilization, thus reducing wide-angle shooting options. The G100 uses the ‘OZO’ directional audio system designed by Nokia, which allows you to select the direction in which sound is recorded, even using face detection in one mode. While the G100 has a external mic socket, there’s no headphone jack to be found.

    Alongside the G100 comes the DMW-SHGR1 tripod grip ($ 99). It can be a small selfie stick (with still and video capture buttons) or a mini tripod. The grip is powered by the camera’s micro USB port.

    The DC-G100 will go on sale in late July at an MSRP of $ 749 when kitted with the ultra-compact 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 power zoom lens. Adding the tripod grip increases the price to $ 799.

    A special promotion for both kits (US only, through August 1st) includes a $ 50 instant rebate, extra battery and external charger. Other kits will be available globally.

Usability is further enhanced by its remarkably compact and lightweight design that doesn’t skimp on functionality and creative options.

    1. The Logical Next Step from your Smartphone

    With their limited sensor size and optics, a Smartphone can only take your creativity so far, the LUMIX G100 uses a smartphone crushing 4/3rds sensor that records smooth, high-resolution QFHD 4K videos in 3840 x 2160 resolution at 30p or 24p in MP4[1] and Full-HD at 60p. The five-axis hybrid I.S. (image stabilizer)[2] in the LUMIX G100 provides effective shake suppression essential for capturing stable, easy-to-see video in scenarios such as walking or in a moving vehicle.     Advanced videographers will appreciate the V-LogL recording capability; users can apply the LUT (Look Up Table) of their choice on the recorded V-LogL footage via a PC to create a differentiated video with subtle colors and moods.

    The Panasonic G100 is officially here and we got the chance to shoot around with a pre-production model prior to launch. Despite its billing as a vlogging-centric camera, it’s also a capable stills-shooter thanks to a 20MP Four Thirds sensor. But it’s worth noting: there’s no in-body stabilization.
