  • The PureView trademark is now owned by HMD Global

Nokia’s PureView moniker used to stand for innovation in mobile imaging and excellent smartphone camera performance. With their large sensors and Zeiss-designed lenses devices like the Nokia 808 PureView or the Lumia 1020 PureView were a step ahead of the competition at the time.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to keep the Nokia smartphone division afloat and not too long after it was sold to Microsoft in 2013, smartphone production was ceased completely. Today the Nokia smartphone brand is owned by HMD Global and now it has emerged that the Finnish company has also secured the rights to use the PureView trademark.

More recently HMD Global has launched several Nokia phones with a retro twist, for example redesigns of the legendary Nokia 3310 and 8110 phones. So could we see an updated version of the 808 PureView or Lumia 1020 at some point in the nearer future?

A 2018 version of the 808 or 1020 would likely not come with one large sensor but could, according to some rumors, feature a circular multi-lens setup. IFA in Berlin, where we will likely see several new Nokia models, is around the corner. Hopefully there’ll be a PureView-branded model among the new offerings.

  • House of Eternal Return: Trippy Exhibit Owned by George RR Martin

[ By Steph in Destinations & Sights & Travel. ]

Meow Wolf House of Eternal Return

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin purchased a sprawling abandoned bowling alley in Santa Fe, New Mexico so an art collective called Meow Wolf could transform it into a bizarre and colorful immersive environment called The House of Eternal Return. Step inside to find 20,000 square feet of trippy black-lit spaces you can literally get lost within, crawling into a fireplace to find an expansive new space full of surreal wonders like neon forests, alien plants and twenty-foot rabbits.

Unlike most art installations, it’s made to be experienced physically, with strange new sights around every corner waiting for you to touch, climb, squeeze and swing your way through all of their secrets. The result of a collaboration between over 100 artists, the House of Eternal Return is a “wild new form of non-linear storytelling which unfolds through exploration, discovery and 21st century interactivity. The premise: Something has happened inside a mysterious Victorian house that has dissolved the nature of time and space. Venture through the house of the Selig family, and discover secret passageways into fantastic dimensions!”

There are no guides, maps or pathways, and you could have a different experience in the space no matter how many times you explore it. At the center of the massive facility is a full-sized Victorian house where everything’s a little bit off: floors ripple, lights come streaming out of drains, refrigerators lead to secret tunnels and even the toilets contain unexpected surprises. You may enter through the front door, but you don’t leave that way. In fact, it’s hard to tell whether you’ll ever leave.

A team of six writers created the story elements, taking cues from the objects the various participating artists produced for the installation. In addition to this art exhibit turned fantasy world, there’s a jungle gym, a children’s museum and a music venue hosting such acts as CocoRosie and Mykki Blanco. Martin has granted Meow Wolf with a ten-year lease to do whatever they want with the space, so there’s plenty of time to plan a road trip to check it out. In the meantime, check out all the photos on Meow World’s Instagram.

  • 9% of dPS Readers Have Owned More than 10 Digital Cameras

Last month 14,002 readers responded to the question in our monthly poll which asked how many digital cameras they had owned.

    The results are in!

    Screen Shot 2013 07 02 at 9 34 03 PM

It seems there was a fairly even spread among readers who have owned between 1-5 digital cameras – with 10-20% of respondents in each category.

The interesting category to me was the 10+ category with just under 9% of our readers having owned more than 10 cameras! The comments that accompanied the original poll post showed that many of those who voted in this category reported having had significantly more than 10 too! It looks like we’ve got some enthusiasts in our midst! :-)

  • How Many Cameras Have You Owned? [POLL]

ZA10AThis morning I opened up the cupboard in my study where I keep my camera gear and my eye was drawn to the very first digital camera that I owned – a little Canon Powershot A10 camera (pictured right) with what I thought at the time was an amazingly big 1.3 megapixel sensor. Before that I’d used a friends Sony Movica camera that had a 1.4 inch floppy disk to record the images).

It made me think about how digital cameras have changed over the years and how many different digital cameras of different types I’ve owned.

I have 13 cameras in that cupboard today (I have a feeling I owned another couple which may be in the hands of family or friends) plus have used numerous camera phones.

I thought it might make an interesting poll question. How many digital cameras have you owned? Keep your response to just the cameras (not camera phones) if you can.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

I’d also love to hear in the comments:

    1. what was your first digital camera?
    2. what has been your favorite digital camera?

For me the first was my Canon A10 but I think my favorites would have to have been my Canon EOS 20D (my first DSLR which was when I really started to get intrigued by digital) and my Leica M9-P which helped me slow down and begin to enjoy my photography again after a period of getting a little disillusioned by it.

    What about you?
