Canon announces the RF 85mm F1.2 L USM lens, the first RF lens to feature its BR optics

Canon has released the RF 85mm F1.2 L USM lens, a medium telephoto lens that’s the first RF lens, and only the company’s second lens, to feature Canon’s Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) Optics. It will sell with a recommended price of $ 2699. There’s no news of the DS ‘Defocus Smoothing’ variant Canon has said is in development.

The lens features a new optical design compared to the EF version of the 85mm F1.2 II USM lens that includes one aspherical element, one ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass element and the aforementioned BR optics, which is placed between the concave and convex lenses and is designed to eliminate longitudinal chromatic aberration (typically seen as purple and green fringing in front of and behind the focal plane). In total, it contains 13 elements in 9 groups. Canon has also included its Air Sphere Coating (ASC), which helps to minimize lens flare and ghosting.

The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM lens has an aperture range of F1.2 through F16, a minimum focus distance of 85cm (2.79ft), an 82mm front filter thread and is weather-resistant with a dedicated fluorine coating. Like other RF lenses, the RF 85mm F1.2 features a customizable control ring at the front of the lens that can be used to adjust exposure compensation, aperture, ISO or shutter speed.

The lens measures in at 10.4cm (4.1″) diameter, 11.6cm (4.6″) long and it weighs 1.2kg (2.6lbs). Compared to its EF counterpart, it’s both wider, longer and heavier.

The Canon RF 85mm F1.2 L USM lens is currently available to pre-order (Adorama, B&H) for $ 2,699 and is set to ship in June 2019.

Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 III lens launches with improved optics

Zhong Yi Optics has launched the new Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 III lens with Sony FE, Canon RF, and Nikon Z-mount options. The new Mitakon lens features an F0.95 to F16 aperture range alongside 10 elements in seven groups, including four extra-low dispersion elements and one ultra-high refraction element, and an 11-blade aperture diaphragm.

This compact prime lens is designed for low-light scenes, according to ZY Optics, which has utilized a new optics design with improved flare resistance for version III. The 50mm F0.95 lens features a metal body, 50cm minimum focusing distance, 67mm front filter thread, and 1.58lb / 720g weight.

ZY Optics currently lists the Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 III lens on its website for $ 799 USD. The older Mark II version of the lens is still available to purchase at $ 519 USD from select online retailers.

Venus Optics shares details of upcoming zoom and prime cine lenses

Venus Optics is showing prototypes of its new Laowa cinema lenses at the NAB show in Las Vegas, and has released more details of their specification, what we should expect and a better idea of when they will be shipping. The lenses were first shown at Photokina in September, but in the meantime the company has confirmed more information regarding both models which were at a very early stage on their last outing.

The Laowa OOOM 25mm-100mm T2.9, it says, was designed with the aim of suppressing focus breathing, as well as distortion, chromatic aberrations, focus shift across the zoom range and variations in exposure – hence the fixed T2.9 aperture. The company also says that the OOOM name stands for ‘Out Of Our Minds’ and reflects the engineers ideology when it comes to lens design – meaning I suppose that the plans for the concept were ambitious. The lens has a 32mm covering circle which Venus Optics says makes it suitable for all Super 35mm aspect ratios. Using 20 elements in 16 groups the lens will have a closest focus position of 12.7in/32mm.

Venus Optics says we should expect delivery late this year at a price ‘well below USD $ 10,000’ – and that it is working on two more lenses to join it. One will be a wide angle zoom, and the other a telephoto model.

The company’s 12mm T2.9 Zero-D cine lens is also making progress, with details pointing to another late 2019 shipping date. New information on the specification shows the full frame lens will have a covering circle of 46.5mm and a 110mm filter thread. A 114mm step-up ring will be included for filmmakers to fit a rod-supported matte box onto the lens.

Venus Optics, the camera lenses manufacturer who had previously launched a number of unique Laowa camera lenses, is proud to display the new prototypes of Laowa OOOM 25-100mm t/2.9 and 12mm t/2.9 Zero-D in NAB Las Vegas show (Booth#C11738) and its the first time in America.

Laowa OOOM 25-100 t/2.9 Cine

Laowa OOOM 25-100 t/2.9 Cine is a high quality cinematic zoom lenses dedicated for PL/EF cameras with Super35-sized sensors. The name “OOOM” stands for “Out Of Our Minds” which properly describes our ideology of designing lenses. Unlike some other cine zooms in the market, the OOOM 25-100mm was designed with a goal to suppress focus breathing to the minimal at the beginning. Featuring a 32mm image coverage, the new OOOM lens covers a relatively bigger image than other S35 zoom lenses and should be able to cover most of the aspect ratios of cameras with Super35 sensors. The lens can focus up to 12.7” (32cm) away from the front element, which is comparatively closer than other lenses in the market with similar zoom factor. The 20 elements in 16 groups optics design successfully suppress distortion and chromatic aberration to the minimal and deliver outstanding resolution across the frame.

The 4X zoom factor provides a great deal of flexibility to shoot in most scenarios. This lens also has a par-focal and fixed t/2.9 aperture design that both the focus point & brightness will stay unchanged throughout the whole zoom range. The focus, aperture and zoom ring feature a cine-style 0.8 Mod gear teeth for fitting with focus units or motors. An industry standard 114mm front diameter is equipped for filmmakers to fit with their own matte boxes. A focus mark calibration mechanism is incorporated for filmmakers to micro-adjustment in case of front/back focusing. A user-interchangeable PL/EF mounts are available.

Venus Optics are currently preparing a similar cinematic zoom lens with wider focal length and the other one with a more telephoto perspective. The specifications will be announced in due course.

The retail selling price of the Laowa OOOM 25-100mm t/2.9 lens is not fixed yet but it will be well below USD 10,000. It will be available to ship from late 2019.

The lens will make its US debut in the coming NAB show in Las Vegas between 6-11 Apr in Venus Optics Booth (C11738).

Laowa 12mm t/2.9 Zero-D Cine

Laowa 12mm t/2.9 Zero-D Cine is one of the widest and fastest available lens for shooting with large format sensors. It is designed with a 46.5mm image circle, successfully covers both full frame and Vista Vision-sized sensors. Despite the ultra-wide 122° field of view, the image is perfectly rectilinear and features a close-to-zero distortion rate. The focus flow is extended to 270° for cinematographers to also take advantage of the 0.6 feet (18cm) closest focusing distance. The lens is super lightweight (650g, 1.4lbs) and comes with a 100mm front diameter. A 114mm step up ring is included for filmmakers to fit rod supported matte box onto the lens. Both EF and PL mount will be available.

The retail pricing of the 12mm t/2.9 Zero-D Cine is not ready yet and it will be ready to ship in around late 2019.

Venus Optics adds Micro Four Thirds version of its 9mm F2.8 Zero-D lens

Venus Optics has announced the release of a new Micro Four Thirds variant of its Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero-D lens, adding yet another mount to the Fuji X, Sony E, Canon EF-M and DJI DL versions.

The 9mm F2.8 Zero-D lens features nearly identical specifications and optical performance as the existing versions, with a few notable differences. Its optical construction remains the same with 15 elements in 10 groups, including two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements, and it features the same seven-blade aperture diaphragm.

Despite the same optical design, the lens features a 100-degree angle of view, differing 13 degrees from the 113-degree angle of view on the aforementioned APS-C mounts. The Micro Four Thirds version is also slimmed down a bit, measuring in at 6cm / 2.36in long, 5.3cm / 2.09in in diameter and just 210g / 0.46lbs.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is a $1K 360 camera with Raw capture, improved optics and more

Ricoh Imaging has announced the launch of the Theta Z1, its latest flagship model of its 360-degree camera system. The Ricoh Theta Z1 can capture 23MP (6720 x 3360 pixels) still images and 4K/30p (3840×1920 pixels) 360-degree video on its two 1″-type backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400.

Behind the sensor is a new image processing algorithm and improved image capture support. Specifically, Ricoh has added a new HDR Rendering mode, Interval Composite mode for recording star trails, and a multi-bracket mode for capturing the same scene with different settings. In addition to JPEG still image support, the Theta Z1 now supports Adobe DNG Raw capture for more post-processing flexibility.

To compliment the 4K/30p video capture, Ricoh has added a 4-channel microphone that supports 360-degree spatial audio recording. The lens itself has also been updated to reduce ghosting, flaring and purple fringing. An improved aperture mechanism makes it possible to choose between F2.1, F3.5 and F5.6. The Theta Z1 also features 3-axis stabilization to keep stills and video smooth.

The camera itself features a familiar two-lens design with a single button on the front of the device and three additional buttons on the side: one for power, one for Wi-Fi pairing and one for selecting the camera mode. A 0.93-inch OLED screen is used to show various settings and navigate through the shooting modes.

Ricoh has also added additional plug-in support thanks to the AndroidTM-based system, including a new ‘Time-Shift Shooting’ plug-in that makes it possible to remove the person capturing the image from the frame. As with past Theta devices, the Theta Z1 can post media directly to various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube and even Google Maps.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is listed on Ricoh’s online shop for $ 999.95, but the ‘pre-order’ button only takes you to a sign-up page where Ricoh says you will be notified via email when the Theta Z1 becomes available for purchase.

LensRentals constructs a C-4 Optics 4.9mm F3.5 Hyperfisheye Prototype lens

Lensrentals is known for its in-depth teardowns of the latest and greatest camera gear, but not everything has to be about destruction. For a change of pace, Lensrentals has decided to build a lens rather than destroy it.

In particular, Roger and his team have shared the above video and an accompanying blog post highlighting the construction of the the widest fisheye lens in existence, the C-4 Optics 4.9mm F3.5 Hyperfisheye Prototype.

Much like the 1970s Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 fisheye lens, the C-4 Optics 4.9mm F3.5 Hyperfisheye Prototype is so wide that it can actually see behind itself. It takes it a step further though; Instead of the 220-degree field of view of the Nikkor lens, the C-4 Optics fisheye, of which only two have been made, has a 270-degree field of view. Not only is it wider though, it’s also sharper and has less distortion and vignetting.

An individual element is stacked on top of another during the construction of the lens.

The entire construction is a doozy from beginning to end, with individual elements costing as much as $ 5,000, but as always Lensrentals manages to get it down with impeccable results. The final result is an unusual-looking lens that has legs and a backplate to help support the massive hunk of glass and metal.

For those of you who are curious, a smaller Sony camera (A7xxx) fits nicely protected within the legs,’ says Roger in his blog post. ‘For larger cameras the bottom platform can be removed, the legs extended or removed, and various apparatus (rods, follow focus, aperture control, etc.) mounted directly to the cheese plate.’

Venus Optics announces 9mm F2.8 lens with DL mount for DJI cameras, drones

Venus Optics has the Laowa 9mm F2.8 DL Zero-D, the widest lens available for DJI X7 cameras and Inspire 2 drones.

The lens, which is identical in design and specs to the Fuji X, Sony E and Canon EF-M mount versions, features a 113-degree field of view and ‘close-to-zero distortion.’ Venus Optics notes the widest DL lens currently available, the DJI 16mm f/2.8 ASPH ND, has a diagonal field of view of just 80-degrees, meaning X7 and Inspire 2 users are able to get much more in the frame than previously possible, as seen int he comparison video below.

The lens weighs only 210g (0.46 lbs) and measures 60mm (2.36 in) long. It’s constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups with two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements. The front filter thread has a diameter of 49mm and it uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm.

Lensrentals tears down Canon’s 50mm F1.2 RF lens to reveal new optics, tech and surprises

For the latest edition of LensRentals gets down and dirty with camera equipment, Lensrentals founder Roger Cicala tore down Canon’s new 50mm F1.2L RF lens to reveal what tech and construction is lurking inside.

‘Usually, I start tear down posts with a joke about “those of you who are following along by disassembling your own lens at home”,’ reads one of the introductory paragraphs of Cicala’s teardown blog post. ‘Well, no joke today; this is not a home disassembly project. I’m not really sure it’s even a Lensrentals disassembly project. But we got out tools out and boldly went where we probably shouldn’t have gone.’

Right off the bat, Cicala came across something he had never seen in a lens before — a unique screw arrangement on the front part of the lens barrel. Figuring the unique arrangement ‘was some kind of binary code for “Do Not Enter”,’ Cicala instead flipped the lens over and started to disassemble it from the rear.

With each new layer peeled back, new surprises awaited Cicala. There was wiring, rather than simple ribbon cables (which Canon has almost always preferred), a denser PCB, and a little extra electrical shielding.

The teardown also confirmed Canon is using the same USM motor for the 50mm F1.2L RF as it is for its much, much larger 400mm F2.8L IS III lens, which Cicala teases as Lensrentals’ next teardown. Near the USM motor, Cicala noticed an interesting tensioning spring, but it remains unknown what purpose it serves.

Eventually, Cicala turned the lens back over and removed the front lens barrel. After a little work, what he ended up with was the stripped down optical core of Canon’s 50mm F1.2L RF lens. ‘Like a shaved cat, it’s always kind of shocking how small the core of the thing is,’ says Cicala.

Other details revealed in the teardown include a piece of electrical discharge tape that seemingly leads to nowhere, additional sealing felt and a collection of springs that serve an unknown purpose.

All in all, Cicala was impressed with the lens, going so far as to say that this lens, and this lens alone, makes him lust for Canon’s EOS R system. Cicala concludes his assessment saying ‘One thing that is very clear […] Canon has invested very heavily into developing the lenses of the R system. This level of engineering didn’t all happen in the last year, they’ve been working on this for quite a while.’

Zhong Yi Optics launches Mitakon Speedmaster 65mm F1.4 lens for Fujifilm GFX

Zhong Yi Optics has launched the Mitakon Speedmaster 65mm F1.4 for Fujifilm GFX cameras. This announcement makes Zhong Yi Optics the first third-party manufacturer to develop a lens for Fujifilm’s G mount and gives them the claim — for the time being — of having the fastest standard lens designed specifically for GFX medium format mirrorless camera systems.

The lens provides a 46-degree angle of view, roughly equivalent to a 50mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera. It’s constructed of eleven elements in seven groups and has a minimum focusing distance of 70cm.

The Mitakon Speedmaster 65mm F1.4 features an aperture range of F1.4 through F16 via its nine-blade aperture diaphragm. The front filter thread measures in at 72mm and the whole lens weighs 1,050g.

MS Optics has developed the Sonnetar 73mm F1.5 FMC, a lightweight lens made for portraits

MS Optics, a niche optics manufacturer that operates in the basement of Miyazaki san’s Chiba, Japan home, has developed yet another custom lens for Leica M-mount cameras, the Sonnetar 73mm F1.5 FMC.

Inspired by his love for Zeiss’ Sonnar lenses, Miyazaki san created this medium telephoto lens with a unique aesthetic and lightweight design that’s perfect for portraiture. It’s handmade with five elements in four groups and features a multi-coating on every surface for a 97.5% transmission rate.

The lens measures in at 50mm/1.97in in diameter and 56.4mm/2.22in in length, and weighs just 197g/6.95oz. It uses an M49 filter and hood thread size and can focus from infinity to 0.8m/31.5in.

Japan Camera Hunter says the lens is still in development and will be available “from the end of October.” As with all MS Optics lenses, numbers are very limited and delivery times are long due to the handmade nature of the lenses.

Japan Camera Hunter is currently selling the Sonnetar 73mm F1.5 FMC for ¥140,000/USD$ 1,252 and says “this is [effectively] a pre-order for the lens with expected delivery around the middle of November.”
