Here, I take different shots using my Canon 60D with the open shutter/ long exposure techique. I try different aperture settings at this time of night (21:00 – 21:30). My first shoot is at a place called Arthers Seat on the Mornington Peninsula. My second shoot was from a overpass walkway looking down on a freeway a few clicks from my first shoot. How to open a JPG in Photoshop Camera Raw

01 Nov

If you are like me, you like the functionality of the photo processor that Photoshop comes with called Camera Raw, but if your photos weren’t taken in Raw format, such as CR2, photoshop doesn’t let you open the images with CameraRaw. Here’s a simple workaround that allows you to open images in Camera Raw. Once you’ve done that, you can simply right click any file and tell it to open in Photoshop, and it will first take it to Camera Raw. I did forget to mention in the video that if you want Photoshop to ALWAYS open JPGs in CameraRaw, you can adjust the settings in Photoshop preferences (once photoshop is completely open) to make it do that. Just go to (in the menu), Photoshop-Preferences-File Handling, and then check the box that says, “Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files.” Then click Okay. After that it will always open Jpegs in Camera Raw.

Windows 7 – The Explorer is Everywhere; Open a File While Saving Another One

16 Oct

When saving or opening a file in most every Windows 7 application, Explorer features can be used – sometimes with interesting effects.

Here’s a tips many new Windows 7 users don’t know about, and I’ve even shown this to a few experienced users. When opening or saving files in most applications, you are actually opening mini Explorer windows.

What does this mean? Right-click inside a blank area of the file area of the dialog box and you can choose how you want files in the current folder to be viewed, sorted, grouped, etc. You can even select “New” in the dialog box to create new files while supposedly inside an “Open” dialog box!…

25 September, 2012 – Sigma DP1 Merrill Review & Open Letter to Sigma’s CEO

16 Oct

When I started working with the Sigma DP2 Merrill I was floored by the image quality. It’s a quirky camera that needs patience to use, but rewards with sensor and lens quality unmatched in the industry for its price and size.

It’s sister camera, the DP1 Merrill, with an effective 28mm focal length lens, started to ship recently and I was very curious to learn if it could match the optical quality of its older sibling. My review is now online.

As remarkable as these cameras are when it comes to image quality, sadly Sigma’s raw software is truely horrid. But, it’s the only game in town unless and until Sigma starts working with the major software companies or adopts DNG export.

I have therefore written an open letter of concern to Sigma’s CEO which is also part of my SD1M review.

"You and Jeff did it again!  A great series of videos.

I’ve watched the earlier Camera to Print series as well as the LR 2 & 3 videos and as usual, I learned
new technique and ideas even though I’ve been behind a camera for 45 years.

Additionally, the rapport you two have is most engaging, enjoyable, and totally different than the sterile video tutorials from others (I’m afflicted with being a visual learner).

Again, a great series of videos that have helped me grow once again."

[MODIFIED] Google Search Engine – Automatically Open Results in a New Tab or Window

02 Aug

Save time browsing Google results by opening websites in a new tab or window, keeping the search results visible.

As mentioned in a previous MalekTip, if you open Google results in a new browser tab or window, you can more easily return to your search results without having to use the “Back” button or re-enter your search query. However, this requires you remembering to manually do so every time. If you wish, you can have Google automatically perform this task for you:

(Note this tip was updated on 7/29/2012, and Google’s interface is subject to change.)…

Mozilla Firefox – Plugins and Extensions – Double Click a Link to Open in a New Tab

01 Aug

With the DblClicker extension you can double-click links to open up new tabs, useful for search results pages.

When browsing a webpage in Firefox that contains a lot of links, such as a search engine results page, have you found yourself opening each link in a new tab so you can easily switch back to the results page instead of having to use the back button?

If so, you probably have either held down the Ctrl or Command (Mac) key while clicking on each link, or you have right-clicked on each link and selected “Open Link in New Tab”….
