  • Olympus to axe V-series point-and-shoot cameras

    According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Olympus is to cease production of its cheapest V-series point-and-shoot compact digital cameras. This follows a financial report this week which showed a group net profit of 8.02 billion Yen in 2012, driven by the company’s medical instrument business, but a loss of 23.07 billion yen for its imaging business. In response, the company has slashed its sales targets for compact cameras from 5.7 million units in 2012 to 2.7 for the current business year. Click through for more details.

  • Olympus announces PEN Lite E-PL6 in Japan

    Olympus has announced the PEN Lite E-PL6 on its Global Website – an update to the E-PL5 that appears destined for the Asian market only. It adds in several of the features from the E-P5 announced at the same time, including an ISO 100-equivalent LOW setting, short release lag shutter mode, intervalometer and time-lapse movie shooting, and full compatibility with the VF-4 viewfinder. It also gains a dual-axis electronic level. It will come body only, in a kit with the 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 II R, or in a twin-lens kit also adding the 40-150mm 1:4-5.6 R. It’s set to be available at the end of June.

  • Olympus launches PEN E-P5 high-end Wi-Fi enabled Micro Four Thirds model

    Olympus has announced the PEN E-P5, the fourth in its range of enthusiast-targeted, rangefinder-style Micro Four Thirds cameras. The E-P5 takes the 16MP sensor that has appeared in the company’s other models and adds a five-axis image stabilization system and shutter capable of shooting at 1/8000th of a second amongst a host of tweaks and feature improvements. The camera will available from May at around $ 1,000/€1000. The company has also announced black versions of its 17mm, 45mm and 75mm F1.8 prime lenses, priced the same as their silver counterparts. There is also a 2.4M dot LCD electronic viewfinder, the VF-4.

We’ve been using a pre-production E-P5 for the last few days and have had a dig beyond the specifications to discover how the latest range-topping PEN behaves. We investigate the camera’s latest features, including its easy-connect Wi-Fi, its degree of customization and its ‘2×2’ dial behavior. We also take a look at how it compares to the E-P3 and OM-D E-M5, and how the high resolution VF-4 handles on the E-P5 and existing models.

  • More pictures leak of purported Olympus PEN ‘E-P5’

    Detailed images on a Chinese blog may reveal more about the next-generation Olympus PEN. Although no official announcement has been made, the extent of the leaks about the camera make its existence an open secret. Rumors suggest the camera will be called the E-P5, and suggest it will have Wi-Fi capabilities (both of which seem plausible, based on the company’s naming scheme and recent industry trends).

  • Olympus opens “OM-D: Photography Playground” in Berlin

    Olympus has opened an exhibition that it’s calling the “OM-D: Photography Playground” in Berlin, Germany. Situated in the Opernwerkstaetten gallery space, it’s an installation of works by 12 artists and collectives that visitors are encouraged to explore, interact with, and photograph.  It’s open daily from 11am to 7pm until 24 May 2013, and entry is free. Visitors can also borrow an OM-D E-M5 during their visit, to try out the camera at no charge.

  • DxO Optics Pro 8.1.4 adds Olympus XZ-2, Nikon 1 J3 and Panasonic GH3

    DxO Labs has released version 8.1.4 of its DxO Optics Pro software. Both the Elite and Standard versions gain Nikon Coolpix P7700, Nikon 1 J3, Olympus XZ-2 iHS, and Panasonic DMC-GH3 support. The update also adds more than 200 lens and cameras combinations for Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sigma, Tokina, and Zeiss users.   • Olympus announces Stylus VH-520 10x, 14MP compact superzoom

    Olympus has announced the Stylus VH-520, an affordable 10x compact superzoom with a 14MP CMOS sensor. It offers a 26-260mm equivalent stabilized zoom lens and the ability to shoot 1080p video. It also offers ‘Magic Filter’ processing effects that can be applied to both stills and video, along with high-speed movie mode. The VH-520 will be available from April at a price of around £130.

  • Olympus USA announces XZ-10 enthusiast compact

    Olympus USA has announced the launch of the Stylus XZ-10 enthusiast compact, just three weeks after it was introduced to the rest of the world. A cheaper companion to the XZ-2, it’s built around a 26-130mm equivalent F1.8-2.7 lens, coupled with a 12MP 1/2.3″ type backlit CMOS sensor that offers ISOs up to 6400 and sensor-shift image stabilization. It can record 1080p Full HD movies with stereo sound, has a fixed 3″ 920k dot touch-sensitive LCD, and offers a full set of manual controls including a customizable round-lens control ring. It’ll be available from March 2013 at an estimated street price of $ 399.99.

  • Olympus denies reports that it is ceasing DSLR production

    Olympus is denying reports that it is ceasing its production of DSLR cameras. In its official statement Olympus says there is no truth to these reports and the company will continue to offer DSLR cameras alongside its popular mirrorless camera range. The reports came as Olympus promised ‘extensive business restructuring’ in its imaging division, above and beyond the downsizing already taking place as part of its ‘medium term vision.’
