The OV5645 is built on an affordable 1/4″-type 5MP sensor built around a standardized MIPI interface, allowing processing functions to be passed to the host processor, rather than having to include JPEG compression in the device. The OV8835 uses a higher-end, 1/3.2″-type 8MP second-generation BSI CMOS sensor with claimed ‘best-in-class pixel performance.’

VSCO Keys offers costly shortcut to Lightroom efficiencies

16 Oct

VSCOKeys.png

Visual Supply Company has announced ‘VSCO Keys,’ a keyboard shortcut customization tool for Adobe Lightroom 3 or 4. It aims to make working in Lightroom more efficient, but the $ 125 price tag (only a fraction less than Lightroom itself) is likely to limit its appeal to photographers who aren’t profiting from their work. The software comes with two presets, one of which adds shortcuts without clashing with any of the software’s native controls, while a more comprehensive one replaces several of them. A 14-day free trial allows you to assess the value of the efficiency savings to your workflow. (via Petapixel)

645 PRO app for iPhone offers access to uncompressed camera output (but not Raw)

21 Apr

Jaggr.jpg

App developer Jag.gr has launched 645 PRO, a flexible photography and processing app that provides access to the uncompressed output of the iPhone’s camera. The company grabs the processed camera output before the phone compresses it, and saves it as a TIFF file. These files, which it slightly optimistically calls ‘Developed Raw,’ can then be accessed via iTunes. The app also offers a series of features such as spot metering and exposure, focus and white balance lock, as well as a series of film simulation options and aspect ratio options, but it’s the uncompressed output that is, as far as we are aware, unique.

24 Sep

Sony has posted a note on its support site saying it will modify NEX-5N cameras of users troubled by clicking noises during video recording. The company points out that the phenomenon only occurs: ‘if the camera undergoes sudden motion while recording; motion generally inconsistent with smooth video recording.’ But has said it will make an ‘adjustment’ to the cameras (during the warranty period) of users who feel they’re likely to encounter the issue. The company doesn’t say that only people combining jogging with their videography need apply, but…

07 Jul

Fujifilm Canada has released details of the forthcoming X100 firmware update on its ‘@fujiguys’ Twitter feed. A series of updates detail ten significant changes to the X100’s firmware, designed to address some of the criticisms of the camera’s behavior. Changes include more responsive ‘wake from sleep’ behavior without a long press of the shutter button, clear indication of the eye sensor being engaged and the maintaining of ISO/Self-Timer/DR/Flash/Macro settings when exposure mode, review mode or power state is changed. The original messages can be found at http://twitter.com/#!/fujiguys but, as yet, no official announcement of when the updated firmware will become available has been made.

Hasselblad H4D-200MS offers 200 megapixel multi-shot images

30 May

Hasselblad has announced a camera capable of producing 200MP images based on shifting its 50MP sensor. The H4D-200MS uses an extension of the company’s sensor-shift, multi-shot (MS) technology to create a 200 megapixel file from six images taken at slight offsets. It can also use the four-shot mode used by the H4D-50MS that shifts the sensor by one pixel in each direction to capture all colors at each position. The latest approach adds 1/2pixel offsets to increase the captured resolution to 200MP. The H4D-200MS is available for €32,000 or as a €7,000 factory-return upgrade for H4D-50MS owners.
