The winning comments

By Harry McCann – Nearing the end of my current career I have finally begun to devote more time to my love of photography. For as long as I can remember I have loved to capture the moments. I still remember the Christmas (many, many years ago) I got my Polaroid and the little note on it said: “Open me first.” Since that time I have taken 1000s of photos. However, it wasn’t until recently that I began to take the time and learn what was needed to take photographs that others would also enjoy. I have learned quite a bit in the last couple years. The biggest thing I have learned…is that I still have a lot to learn. A course from the New York Institute of Photography would provide me with the skills and technical experience to take my photography to the next level. I would be grateful for the opportunity.

By Matt Bingaman – I am nearing the end of my Air Force career. This course will help me take my photography to the next level so I can recoup some of the time I lost with my family due to my job. Thank you for the opportunity.

By Elizabeth Hollis – This is a wonderful opportunity for someone like me! I’ve been an enthusiastic amateur for many years and feel I have improved as much as I can through self-direction. I crave a comprehensive course like this to help me grow my skills and determine my focus. Feedback on my photos and goals from an actual professional would be invaluable. My ultimate dream is to become a professional photographer and own my own photography business. This course would be a big step in achieving that goal. Thank you for making this opportunity available.

Thank you all again.

The winning comments:

By ETricco – This course seems to be just what I am looking for. I have dreams of getting into some sort of photography-related field (most often when the 3 1/2 walls of my cubicle feel like they’re closing in on me and I need to find a more fulfilling career ASAP), but how do you start?? They are probably pipe dreams, but I figure at the very least I would like to master the skills. I use manual settings all the time and end up with decent pictures, but they are the production of lots of shots and just testing out different settings to see what works. I want to move on from this try-and-see method to a more calculated, intent technique. Anyone can take a beautiful photo of something beautiful, but I want to gain the skills to take something ugly or ordinary and capture it in a beautiful frame- and to be able to do that consistently, knowing exactly how to go about it and why. I’ve been reading up on ISO and aperture and shutter speed and have a basic grasp of what they are and how they work together, but I can’t yet look at something and know what my settings should be. I think if I had the framework this course provides instead of the piecemeal learning I’ve been doing, pulling together tips and facts from different articles and forums I find, it would really pull everything together; moreover, I think I would also be a source of motivation, because I love learning but trying to teach myself on my own is often overwhelming and disheartening. Lastly, I love that this course can be done at my own pace, so it can fit into my already hectic life and I can really get the most out of it. Please pick me and rescue me from my Office Space nightmare!

By Felicia Giberson – NYIP to me is a place that cares about their students by helping them to become better photographers. Being able to be mentored by a professional photographer would be absolutely amazing. I never seem to be completely satisfied with my pictures and to be able to have a professional guide me and give me one on one feedback is priceless. I have been learning for over a year now and seem to have hit a roadblock in the way that my pictures are coming out. My focus, composition, and exposure always seem to be off and while I can fix exposure and composition in the computer I cannot fix the focus. I would be so excited to have someone be able to give me pointers to use so that I can correct this and other issues I am having. Watching videos online and reading articles only helps so much. I would love to have the chance to get that perfect final image in my photos that I see in my mind and I believe that the New York Institute of Photography can do that.

By SD Art Teacher – How could I use an NYIP course, oh let me count the ways…
First, I am a high school art teacher from a rural school in South Dakota. And I have been given a wonderful opportunity this spring to teach a photography class. (I have only been asking for this opportunity for about 10 years or so), but anyways, I have finally been granted my wish.

This brings me to my first problem. The last time I took a photography class we used this stuff called film and we had to edit, develop and process it in a room, called a “Darkroom” ironically. Hopefully these still exist, but no matter what, this is where I learned. Now not to make myself sound THAT old, I have owned a DSLR camera for about 10 years now. I just have never officially taken a class. I am very proud to be a self-taught photographer. But I think I am in over my head with this teaching photography thing.

NYIP could help me in so many ways because while I think I know composition, lighting and editing, I also know that I might NOT know everything. Usually this is hard for me to admit. But when it comes to photography, which is at the lower end of my knowledge pool, I would be grateful for any assistance I can get. I am especially interested in learning the editing phase of the class. I know enough about editing programs to basically be dangerous, but I am very nervous about teaching tips and tricks to high school students who are depending on me for every step of the process.

While I am nervous, I am also very excited to be teaching a photography class. I also think I am in a great position to not only use the knowledge I will learn from NYIP but to pass it on to future photographers who will learn the true art of photography. I hope to inspire them to find a passion in taking photos and learning to edit them so that they look like they have been created by professionals. My students might not become professional photographers but through my journey I hope to help them find their own adventure and love for photography. Who knows, they might even be inspired to pick up their own NYIP class in the future.

Thank you all again.

Thanks to everyone for entering and to NYIP for yet again, sponsoring another wonderful competition.

The winning comments:

By Angela PritchardFourteen years ago, when my husband and I tied the knot, we could not afford to hire a wedding photographer. Instead, we bought a few of those one-time use cameras and had family members take photos. Needless to say, we didn’t get any really good, memorable photos. Over the years I have gone through countless wedding photos posted on the internet and so many of them are images that I would have loved to have had to remember my wedding by. In the last few years I have actually photographed several weddings for friends and family. I make sure to photograph every single detail that I would have wanted captured for my big day. From the rings to the Borrowed, Blue, Old, and New, the dresses and the tuxes, the cake and the flowers, everything gets photographed. Photographing weddings can be very stressful but it’s that stress combined with all the photos I didn’t get for my wedding that pushes me to get the very best for the couple I’m shooting for. I would love to take the Wedding Photography course to help mold me into a better wedding photographer; to improve on the things I’m doing right and correct the things I may be doing wrong. I believe this course would help me immensely. I have my fingers crossed and I will be waiting right here in front of my computer for you to contact me to tell me that I have won. Thank you so much for considering me. And if by some strange reason I don’t win, I will still continue to make beautiful photos of the world around me.

By Jenn S.I would love to win the Portrait Photography Course. Last year while I was pregnant with our second son, we learned that my husband had cancer. He got through treatments (and is now cancer-free!), but the cost of those treatments took a toll on our finances, and we were left with little money for me to start the photography business I had been planning on to help support our family. Through hard work, I was able to purchase some basic equipment, but because we could not afford it, everything I have learned about using my DSLR, equipment, and running a successful business has been self-taught, and I am sure that there are many gaps in my knowledge base. I would love to take the Portrait Photography Course to enhance my understanding of posing, learn how to better run my business, and so much more. I think I would really benefit from an environment where I am able to get the (professional) feedback on my work that I desperately need, and having a mentor to guide me sounds just heavenly! I also think I’d also greatly benefit from the student forum and the knowledge base my peers could provide there! Thank you so much for the opportunity to win!

By Deonne Kahler I’d very much like to win the Travel Photography Course. I’ve been making photographs since high school, but only recently started taking it seriously, and just placed in my first competition. I’m on a mission to see every U.S. National Park, and until now I’ve been documenting those visits the best I can. I feel so strongly that it’s my job to let people know about the wonders of the parks – which include historical monuments, an easy and accessible way for all of us to learn more about this country and its past. I’m based in Taos, NM but I travel around the country with my dog Sam in my 13′ Scamp travel trailer. I’ve been winging it with my photographs up until now, but the NYIP course would push me to the next level, as I still have plenty to learn about using my Nikon D90, being more nimble with it in the field, documenting the National Park sites in a unique way (honing my voice), and translating that to books/online media where I share photos and stories about the Parks. They’re such a treasure, and with the NYIP course, i’d be much better equipped to tell their stories and get more folks involved either by simply visiting, or supporting the National Parks foundation to keep them safe from development. Thank you for the opportunity! (P.S. This is a terrific site – so much good information. Thanks for that, too.)

By VickiI am a Social worker in the military and Photojournalism is exactly what I’m looking for. I’m a beginner and have been doing a lot of learning on my own, but would love to have the opportunity to learn from professionals. I’m drawn to photojournalism because of my love for people and our stories and would love to improve my ability to capture these stories in my pictures. I’ve only been deployed once but hopefully will have the opportunity to travel more with my Army career and use photojournalism skills to capture my travels.
