Being Too Beautiful With Nicole Luneburg

28 May

Photographer Nicole Luneburg interviews with Fashion Photography Blog (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

FashionPhotographyBlog.com was able to catch up with another of our past Photo of The Week winners, Australia-based photographer, Nicole Luneburg. We were curious to discover what she has been up to since taking the photo that won her the title of photo of the week and we were delighted to hear about her more recent work.

I asked Nicole where in her photography journey does she think she is at now, she kindly told that “It has taken a few years with many up and down periods.  I’ve finally reached a new place where I’m consistently able to produce quality work. I’m also able to access a larger amount of creative minded people and models who want to work with me. It’s a great feeling! I’m looking forward to seeing where this year and the future will take me!”

How has her photography changed since taking “Pretty In Pink”, the photo that won her Photo Of the Week, I was curious to ask. I wanted to know what is different now in the way that she shoots, she revealed that, she has evolved as a photographer since ”I used to put a lot of pressure on myself. Now I accept the things I cannot control on the day of the shoot, I’m able to adapt much better now. No that’s a little lie I still put pressure on myself ;). I focus less now on the technical side of photography and try to capture and post process to create what I love in the first place, creating what my mind sees.”

In regards to shoots that Nicole shot recently, she shared with us some of her stories. She told us that “I did a nude shoot with model Amy Heather and makeup artist Ali Stewart was inspired by amazing artists Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo. I wanted an emoting image that showed the realization of a woman’s own feminine beauty, absolutely free and without shame. I specifically picked a model who I knew would be able to realize this image for me perfectly.

Another recent shoot with black and white images of a blonde with a cigarette and a Minolta X-300 was with model Olivia Meehl and makeup artist Mel Philippou. I was inspired by the style of Priscilla Presley and Lana Del Rey combined. I modernized it a bit and applied my style to it with a sense of the scene being a movie still. It was a very exciting thing for me to do. “

To shoot these shoots and for her more recent work, Nicole explained that “A large amount of my work was taken with the Canon 350D and a Canon 50mm lens. In the past 2 years, I’ve been using the Canon 5D Mark II and the lenses I use are predominantly the Canon 135mm and Canon 50mm. I also use a Canon 580 EX II through various light diffusers.”

Nicole continues to detail that the change in photography equipment also meant a change in the way she approaches lighting, “I shoot with a Canon 580 EX II usually through a soft box or a beauty dish. More recently I have been getting into natural light. It’s something I like to do when I want to focus back into my zone – just me and the model, no one else, no lighting. Once I’m back in touch with what I feel is the pureness of what I love to do, I am able to continue again with the various forms.

So after all the shoots she has done over the year, what has been Nicole’s top accomplishment to date you might ask? Well, the photographer says that it would have to be her portfolio, “I think my greatest achievement is having a body of work that people can see and allows them to put a lot of trust in me to photograph for them. I’m very proud of this as it means the hard work and effort I and my team mates have put into my work has opened up a lot of creative opportunities for me.”

Pretty In Pink With Nicole Luneburg

01 May

Nicole Luneburg AKA Peppermunk photo Pretty In Pink

It was an interesting week when Nicole Lüneburg aka Peppermunk won Photo of The Week. Not only there very mixed and competitive voting, there was a bit of a mix up as well. Remind me not to do Facebook posts at midnight lol. I was very relieved that the confusion didn’t affect the week’s polling at all because the public voted using the photographers’ names so it was definitely clear that Nicole Luneberg won in the end, though second and third place was not far behind.

I was able to make contact with Nicole to talk more about her photographer’s journey and the story behind her winning photo that won that week. This Australian portrait photographer based in Adelaide, South Australia loves to capture people in creative ways. Her “Pretty In Pink” winner’s photo is no exception with a bold pink color palette, shimmering lights and alluring smoky make up that beckons attention.

When asked about how she got started in photography, Nicole replied “Growing up I loved looking at the glossy magazines. I still do! I loved looking at all the details in the clothing, the make up, the hair, the mini world that look perfect on a shiny A4 sized piece of paper. I always wanted my own camera, but wasn’t allowed one so when I was able to afford it, I bought my own. It took a long time before I gathered the courage to ask someone to pose for me. When I did that very first shoot, I fell in love with photography and it has consumed me since!”

I also asked her about the inspiration behind her work, particularly, the story behind her winning photo, she explained that “I always go through phases. For example, right now I’m going through a water phase and I just want to photograph models in water! At the time of this photograph of the model, Emma Watson, I was going through a pink phase. I wanted to photograph everything with a pink hue. I also have a weakness for faces, I can happily look at people’s faces for days on end because I find them interesting. I guess this photograph has both those elements, the beautiful face and the pink hues.”

This photograph was taken back when she was still using her Canon 350D and a very cheap 50mm lens. Both of these piece of equipment were extremely dear to her, “I used to have bad dreams about losing these two things, I loved them very much!”. There was also a single light through a soft box just above the model’s head.

When asked to explain her photographic style, Nicole replied “I’ve been told that I have a specific ‘style’. That a person is able to see a photograph and know that it’s mine. I wish I knew what exactly it is, but I don’t! Maybe someone can tell me what it is! I go with my gut feeling at every shoot. I know what I like seeing through my lens and that is when I click :)”

My Nicole Richie Cover Look

04 Dec

Watch this video on my site for product links, tips and more info: www.lisae.me.uk This make-up look I did on Nicole Richie for the cover of UK InStyle (shot by photographer extraordinaire Lee Broomfield) has been hugely requested since I put the shots on my blog last week. It’s a strong Autumnal look with fierce eye make-up that I thought worked really well on Nicole’s big eyes. My eyes are a completely different shape to Nicole’s but hopefully this tutorial demonstrates how the eye-make can be adapted to suit different eye shapes. The plum colour and glittery-ness of the look increases with flash photography. Have fun! x

Photographers Nicole S. Young and Brian Matiash Meet on Google+ and Get Married

03 Dec

Photo from Nicole S. Young’s G+ stream.

One way you can judge the health of a social network is by the relationships that come out of it. There has probably been no more vibrant social network for photographers this past year than Google+. Google+ attracted the most social of photographers early on last year when they launched and they’ve succeed in capturing the soul of social networking for photographers since. There are many sites where you can post photos, Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, 500px, but none have quite the social magic that Google+ has in quite the same way right now.

I remember when Flickr first launched back in the day, back when they seemed to have a simliar magic. One of the first things you saw coming out of Flickr were romantic relationships — many people were meeting on Flickr, getting involved and in some cases even getting married. Google+ is only a year and a half old at this point, but today I saw the first photographer marriage coming out of the network that I’ve noticed so far, photographers Nicole S. Young and Brian Matiash announced that they tied the knot.

For those of you who don’t know Nicole and Brian, they are wonderful photographers and contributors to G+. Nicole is a photographer and author who specializes in stock and food photography and Brian works for photo processing company onOne Software and like me loves to shoot abandoned and urbex type photography.

From Nicole:

“Every once in a while something that is seemingly small comes along that makes a difference in your life, and other times it changes your life completely. In the summer of 2011 Google+ was brought to life, and with that the beginning of Hangouts and a swarm of amazing people from all over the world. This community here on Google+ has impacted my life so wonderfully and drastically, and in the process I’ve made many life-long friends and connected with people I barely knew before, but through the popularity of Hangouts I was able to actually interact with.

One of those people was +Brian Matiash, and just a few months ago we officially tied the knot!

Yes, it’s true. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and I said YES!!! We had a simple ceremony on what we call “Marriage Day”

My good Pal Trey Ratcliff got the assist for helping to introduce them to each other on, yep, you guessed it, a Google+ hangout.

Congratulations to Brian and Nicole both on this excellent news! I’m curious as to whether or not they’ll be registering at B&H or Adorama.

And for the rest of you, before you pony up for that match.com or eHarmony account next month, you just might want to reconsider and head on over and check out Google+ instead. My money’s on Scott Jarvie being next, btw. ;)
