Moment launches 37mm Cine filters and mount for use with smartphone cameras

Mobile photography company Moment has launched a new 37mm Cine filter set for smartphones, including a compatible mount. Though Moment already offered a series of filters, those products were designed for the company’s mobile lenses. The new 37mm Cine filter set, however, is made for use with a phone’s camera using its native lenses.

The new filter mount is designed for use with Moment’s existing smartphone cases for iPhone, Pixel, OnePlus, and Galaxy models. Users who don’t already have a Moment phone case can order the new 37mm Cine filters and mount in a bundle that features a phone case, 37mm ND filter and 37mm CPL filter. This bundle costs $ 99.96 USD.

The new 37mm Cine CPL phone filter set is available with the mount and CPL filter for $ 49.98 USD, plus there’s a 37mm Cine ND filter set with the mount and ND filter for $ 39.98 USD. Both new filters are scratch-resistant and feature hydrophobic, anti-static, anti-reflective, color-corrective coatings.

The filter mount will work with any 37mm filters and the filters with any lenses with a 37mm filter thread, according to the company. The entire 37mm Cine filters and mount line is available now from Moment.

Meike adds Canon RF, Nikon Z mount options to its manual focus 85mm F2.8 macro lens

Hong Kong-based company Meike has launched new Canon RF and Nikon Z mount options for its full-frame 85mm F2.8 macro lens. The lens — which is currently available in Sony E, Fuji X, MFT, Canon EF and Nikon F mount systems — is a manual macro lens with an F2.8 to F22 aperture, 55mm filter size, 0 to 1.5x magnification, and 25cm (9in) minimum focusing distance.

The lens is constructed of 11 elements in 8 groups and comes in at just 500g (1.1bs). Like its previous full-frame counterparts, the is features an all-metal body alongside three manual adjustment rings for focus, macro focus, and aperture.

The 85mm F2.8 macro lens for Nikon Z and Canon RF is currently listed on the Meike website. No pricing information is available for these two new models, but the current versions currently retail for $ 269.99.

Video: Canon explains how its new RF lens mount is better than smaller, older mounts

Canon Imaging Plaza, an official Canon YouTube channel dedicated to showing off the latest Canon technologies and cameras, has shared a video highlighting the benefits of its new full-frame RF lens mount and the advantages it has over older lens mounts, such as its own EF mount.

The four-and-a-half-minute video uses CGI renderings and example images to show off the various benefits Canon’s RF mount offers and the technology that goes into its RF lenses.

A rendering comparison from the video showing how the light can be better controlled through elements when the elements are able to be placed close to the imaging sensor.

The narrator addresses the shorter back focus distance and larger diameter mount, which allows Canon to move the rear-most elements in lenses closer to the sensor, which helps to minimize chromatic aberration and allows engineers to get more creative with lens designs. Having the rear-most lens elements close to the sensor creates its own problems though, which leads the video to Canon’s SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technologies, which are designed to minimize ghosting and flaring in images.

A comparison shot from the video that shows how the shorter back focus distance and larger diameter mount can yield better image quality—especially near the edges of the frame—thanks to better aberration control.

The video also mentions the additional contacts found in the RF lens mount, which are designed to increase the bandwidth of data and power that flows to and from the lens through the camera.

While this video is clearly about Canon’s RF mount, the pros (and cons) of larger-diameter lens mounts and shorter back focus distances also apply to Nikon’s new Z mount, which is both larger in diameter (55mm to the RF’s 54mm) and features a closer flange focal distance (16mm to the RF’s 20mm).

Aputure announces the Spotlight Mount, an add-on to shape light just right

New and unique in the world of light modifiers, Aputure have announced its new Spotlight. This unit interfaces with their range of C.O.B. lights, including the recently announced 120D MK II.

After the recent reveal at NAB 2019, more details have emerged for this unique light modifier. There are three lenses available at launch—19°, 26° and 36—each of which are user interchangeable to give either wider coverage or more pinpoint accuracy. This, together with the iris and shutter, allow more flexible creative options in shaping the beam.

Precision lenses reduce chromatic aberrations and fall off

The Spotlight uses newly developed lenses to minimize color fringing at the edges of the projected beam circle down to less than 1 mm at 0.5 m. The new high resolution optics give 10x the native light output when used with a 120 D Mark II. This is combined with minimal light fall off and a color shift of less than 200° Kelvin.

The dual mount system also enables the spotlight to be mounted easily on C stands in the field or under slung on the lighting grid in the studio. Below is a quick video from Newsshooter detailing the new Aputure Spotlight:

The Aputure Spotlight is available to pre-order (Adorama, B&H) with one of the three lenses for $ 499. The lenses are also available separately at $ 259 (Adorama, B&H), as is the optional iris at $ 99 (Adorama, B&H). The Aputure Spotlight and accessories are expected to ship mid-May.

Tokina announces new 100mm F2.8 1:1 macro lens for Sony E mount cameras

Tokina has announced the FiRIN 100m F2.8 FE Macro Lens for Sony E mount camera systems.

The lens is constructed of nine elements in eight groups and features a nine blade aperture diaphragm. It features 1:1 maximum magnification, has a minimum focusing distance of 30cm (11.8in), uses a 55mm front filter thread and includes a printed magnification scale on the extending lens barrel to add an extra visual queue when composing shots.

The lens measures in at 123mm (4.84in) long by 74mm (2.91in) diameter and it weighs 570g (1.3lbs). The Tokina FiRIN 100m F2.8 FE Macro Lens is listed for pre-order at B&H for $ 599. Included in the box is the lens, front and rear lens caps, a BH-533 lens hood and a manual.

Nikon is now bundling its FTZ mount adapter with Z6, Z7 cameras sold in the US

As first reported earlier this week, The Nikon FTZ mount adapter will now be included for free with the purchase of all Z6 and Z7 cameras in the United States.

Nikon’s FTZ mount adapter usually retails for around $ 250 on its own and cost just $ 150 when bundled with the Z6 or Z7 camera, but now it’s being offered free of charge at multiple retailers, including Adorama (Z6, Z7), B&H (Z6, Z7) and Amazon (Z6, Z7).

Again, this deal is limited to the United States for the time being. DPReview has contacted Nikon to see where else, if anywhere, this deal is being offered. The article will be updated accordingly if DPReview gets a response.

SLR Magic brings six MicroPrime lenses to Fujifilm X mount, adds a 12mm as well

Cinema lens manufacturer SLR Magic has announced it will offer all of its existing MicroPrime range in the Fujifilm X mount. Designed for full frame sensors, the lenses will attract a 1.5x angle of view shift when fitted on the APS-C Fujifilm X cameras, but the addition of a new 12mm T2.8 aims to provide a good wide angle so Fujifilm users don’t miss out.

While the other six lenses in the MicroPrime range have been available for some time in the Sony E mount, the 12mm is a completely new lens and is designed only for APS-C sensors. All the lenses in the range have the same external design and mostly weigh the same, so switching from one to another is relatively easy when a rig is in use. They have an 82mm filter thread and use the same 0.8 MOD gears.

The inclusion of the Fujifilm X mount is almost certainly a result of the recent attempts by Fujifilm to attract videographers with the advanced movie features of its X-H1 and X-T3 cameras.

The lens line up will consist of:

  • 12mm T2.8
  • 15mm T3.5
  • 18mm T2.8
  • 25mm T1.5
  • 35mm T1.3
  • 50mm T1.2
  • 75mm T1.5

Sigma updates firmware for multiple EF mount lenses, EF-E converter and one F mount lens

Sigma has released new firmware updates for a number of its Canon EF mount lenses as well as its Canon EF-E converter and a single Nikon F mount lens.

For the Canon EF mount lens included in the update, the firmware mainly addresses compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction feature to ensure corrections match the characteristics of each lens and errors don’t appear when the feature is enabled.

The firmware updates also improve functionality with select EF lenses when used on an EOS R camera with Canon’s EF-EOS R adapters. Below is a list of EF mount lenses that have firmware updates; a detailed list of the updated functionality of each lens can be found in the press release below:

Sigma has also updated the firmware for its MC-11 EF-E adapter to improve functionality and compatibility with the aforementioned Sigma EF lenses. Specifically, it improves the image stabilization functionality when used with the Sony a9 and a7 III when the in-camera image stabilization is set to ‘AUTO.’

Lastly, Sigma has updated the firmware for its 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens for Nikon F mount, improving the stability of the image in the viewfinder for more accurate compositions.

All of lenses can be updated with Sigma’s Optimization Pro tool alongside the Sigma USB Dock.

‘World’s sharpest’ 250mm lens now on Kickstarter with swappable lens mount

Taiwanese lens manufacturer William Optics is proposing to make a flatfield Petzval lens aimed at star gazers and photographers that it claims is the world’s sharpest 250mm.

Originally conceived as a compact and lightweight telescope for astrophotographers, the Redcat 250mm F4.9 uses a pair of synthetic fluorite elements to correct the usual field curvature of the Pretzval design to produce a sharp image right across the frame, according to the company. It is also claimed the lens is corrected to apochromatic standards.

A manual focus lens with a single aperture setting, the Redcat 250mm F4.9 is being promoted for normal subjects as well as for astrophotography on its Kickstarter campaign page. Those using it at night might not get to appreciate its startling red finish, but daylight photographers shooting wildlife could feel a little conspicuous.

Designed with a 44mm covering circle the lens is good for full frame cameras, and comes with an interchangeable T-mount system that allows options for Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony E cameras, with Micro Four Thirds and Pentax K to follow shortly. The lens weighs 1.47kg / 3.24lbs, measures 225mm x 80mm, and features a field rotation function for turning the camera on the mount, with markings for every degree. A reversible mount on the tripod foot has fittings for Arca-Swiss and Vixen style heads, and the lens comes with what is described as a ‘patented’ Bahtinov Mask for astro-focusing.

At the time of writing the funding campaign had raised over $ 47,000 – well beyond the goal of $ 30,000. With most of the discounted deals gone, the lens can be had for $ 648, which the company says represents 93% of the full retail price. Voigtlander Vintage Line lenses for Leica M mount get prices for US, UK markets

Prices have been released in the USA and UK for a pair of new Voigtlander lenses designed for M mount rangefinder cameras. Both the Color-Skopar 21mm f/3.5 VM Aspherical Vintage Line and the Ultron 35mm f/2 VM Aspherical Vintage Line will cost $ 799/£599 and are available now.

The aim of the lenses is to provide compact and high quality optics in a retro style that conjures the essence of the 1950s. The company says it targeted more moderate maximum apertures so that it could keep the lenses small, but also because very wide apertures are less practical when using rangefinders, especially when the subject isn’t central or is moving in the frame.
