Blob: Oblong White Mobile Home Looks Like a Dino Egg

11 Feb

Blob Modern Mobile Home 1

Designed as an extension to a home, this mobile live/work pod eschews conventional mobile home aesthetics in favor of something decidedly more eccentric. ‘Blob VB3′ is an oblong white living space that looks like a gigantic egg when it’s all closed up, but the sides open to reveal a gridded interior for storing small items, working and even sleeping.

Blob Modern Mobile Home 2

Architecture firm dmvA came up with the prototype in response to strict building codes in the client’s city. It contains lots of open niches for storage, multipurpose platforms, lighting, a kitchen and a bathroom. When the airplane-like ‘nose’ is open, it functions as a roof for a small indoor/outdoor space.

Blob Modern Mobile Home 3

Primarily made of polyester, the Blob VB3 is easy to transport, aerodynamic and versatile. It could be used as a guest room, office, pool house or garden house. A circular skylight lets light into the bright white interior.

Blob Modern Mobile Home 4

While the open shelves don’t exactly make it ideal for pulling behind a truck like an Airstream, it’s an interesting way to add a little extra space to an existing building without having to deal with local building regulations.

Mobile Hotel: Converted Double-Decker Bus B&B Still Drives

24 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

bus hotel with tractor

Quintessentially British, this boutique suite sleeps six, features a wood-burning stove and much more, but perhaps most amazing of all: the vehicle remains road-worthy, despite its conversion to a sweet retreat.

bus boutique road worthy

The Big Green Bus was originally part of the west midlands metro transit system and purchased by its new owner (and renovator) Adam Collier-Woods for approximately $ 7,500 at auction on eBay.

The still-working bus, driven back into the countryside by its buyer (and moved around on demand), required more than $ 15,000 to be turned into a unique three-bedroom accommodation, including a functioning kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Currently set on a “glamping site in the heart of the Sussex countryside,” the bus has its own decking area, a fire pit and all this next to a beautiful pond.” The rural property can accommodate extra campers for parties larger than six who wish to enjoy a stay. In addition to pantry essentials (tea, coffee, milk, herbs and olive oil), logs for the fire pit or stove are available on request.

More from its maker and operator about its present location: “A gorgeous 15 minute walk away through country lanes to Chiddingly is the Six Bells pub, a classic traditional country pub, luring all sorts of music, poetry and arts lovers to its various festivals. Brighton is close by too with all its various charms, is 25 minutes drive down the road, or leave your car at Glynde and take the train. Lewes has more trains per hour, Make sure you get to the Lewes Farmers Market on the first Saturday morning of every month.”

Adobe leaks ‘Lightroom Mobile’ app

18 Jan

lightroom.png

Is Adobe planning to release a mobile version of its Lightroom editing program? It seems so, judging by an accidental leak on its own website earlier this week. A private page on Adobe’s website – quickly removed – appears to have revealed details of a planned iOS version of Lightroom, including a price of $ 99 for an annual license. Click through for more (albeit not much more) detail.

A Note to Mobile Phone Browsers/Readers

03 Jan
Please note that for the time being I had to turn off Strobist’s default mobile template for phone browsers.

The mobile template was not compatible with the new archive-facing site transition. I do understand this gives a non-optimal view for some, and for that I apologize.

So, if you have bookmarked the mobile version of the site and are viewing it thusly, you’ll probably henceforth see a confusing hodgepodge of list posts. You should navigate to the non-mobile version, and bookmark that site.

Thanks very much,
David

Year in Review: Mobile Traffic Trends at JMG-Galleries.com

30 Dec

Seeing that it’s the end of the year I thought I would review my web site metrics and share some trends I’ve noticed regarding mobile usage. Note tomorrow I’ll review some interesting social media trends.

Ever since the iPhone was introduced in 2007 I’ve been keeping an eye on how my web site has been viewed. As mobile operating systems have evolved introducing real web browsers (real in the sense that they closely resemble computer based browsers) I’ve been anticipating that there would be a shift in browsing platforms from computers to mobile devices. There really wasn’t a question of whether it would happen, but when and how fast.

Mobile Site Traffic Trends at JMG-Galleries

This year appears to be noteworthy in that over a 1/4 of my site traffic now comes from visitors on mobile devices (cell phones, tablet computers, etc.). Above is a graph showing the percentage of my web site traffic coming from mobile devices. In short, nearly every year since 2007 traffic from mobile devices has doubled. If this trend holds true then next year could be the first year my site traffic is split between mobile devices and computers.  Earlier in the year I realized I needed to adjust my site design to better accommodate mobile devices and implemented a responsive web template. Doing so could have helped sway the numbers, but I think whether my new web template went into effect or not I’d have seen this type of jump.  Will 2014 be the year that mobile viewing takes over? We’ll see.

How did your web site fare with mobile traffic?

Rough Sleeper: Mobile Backpack Shelter for Urban Homeless

25 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

homeless-animated

Amid the various conceptual designs for addressing large-scale homelessness, this working prototype stands out as refreshingly realistic, practical and applicable to the everyday needs of those sleeping on the streets: mobility, storage and shelter.

Ragnhild Lübbert Terpling, who studied both design and journalism, created the pack both for homeless populations and ordinary campers, the latter purchasers subsidizing the former group that is in greater need.

On its functionality: “the hybrid backpack expands into a fully retractable tent-like structure, providing extensive shelter for both those in need or for encampment purposes. Once compressed, the bag supplies enough space for storing essential living supplies; blankets, shoes, and other toiletries.”

Additional items, like spare shoes or a sleeping roll, can be lashed to the exterior of the pack, while more essential and personal possessions are tucked into compartments that are less easily accessed or removed for additional security.

While it by no means ‘solves’ the problem of homelessness, this product adds a layer of comfort and durability absent from typical de facto shelters like cardboard covers or sleeping bags. In short: it is more short-term patch than long-term problem solver, but at least it is a place to start.

Slices of Home: Modular Mobile House-Shaped Micro-Rooms

23 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

modular room rendered blue

Spatial separation can be as much about a feeling of enclosure as a physical divider, like this set of portable lounge structures that provide a semi-secluded experience in an otherwise wide-open space.

modular rooms in context

Proposed by Malcrew for a co-working office space in an old Singapore warehouse, these mobile mini-rooms offer seating and shelving that can be deployed in a variety of personalized configurations.

Better still, like slices of a house set side by side, the disparate units can be slid back together to form gathering or meeting spaces on demand.

Individual cushions can also be removed from each structure to make legroom for sitting upright and, in turn, be used as stools as well.

Inspired by treehouses, white oak frames reference wooden home construction, while brightly-colored interior cushions and walls distinguish the different modules from one another.

Phonebloks Unlocked: Google Backs Modular Mobile Phone

08 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

animated-mobile-modular-pho

More than the sum of its parts, the conceptual swappable-piece mobile phone design that went viral but is now being backed by Google-owned Motorola and is suddenly much closer to becoming a reality. Instead of recycling your cell, imagine switching in new pieces as needed to customize, repair and upgrade the same device indefinitely.

modular device assembled disassembled

Dutch design student  Dave Hakkens set off a chain reaction when he released his initial concept video online featuring Phonebloks, a simple but powerful idea for future-proofing mobile phones and creating an open ecosystem around such devices.

modular upgradeable phone concept

Motorola, meanwhile, was already working on a free, open-hardware device (think: Android for physical objects) along similar lines, and have now teamed up with this suddenly-famous designer. Like app makers in the digital marketplace, developers of physical components can make their own puzzle-piece parts for the devices.

Thunderclap helped Hakkens reach a huge audience quickly, with fans lending their social reach to promote the idea. Engineers, technicians and designers around the world showed interest in Hakkens’ design immediately as he racked up tens of millions of video views. He then began shopping around for partners to work on the project.

For its part in the partnership, Motorola brings technological research, experimentation and expertise to the table. In turn, Hakkens has built a huge fan following, showing his ability as innovator, designer and marketer.

Project Ara, Motorola’s name for the overarching and ongoing project, will be deployed along the same lines as Google Glass to beta testers. The first Phonebloks will be released to a limited audience who will in turn provide suggestions and feedback on the devices.
