The Lily Drone is back: Gets a makeover, better features and a new parent company

01 Sep

The Ill-fated Lily Drone has returned from the grave courtesy of Mota Group, a company that acquired the Lily Drone assets after its original company, Lily Robotics, announced back in January that it was shutting down and then promptly got sued. The new version of Lily drone sports a different design and several new features versus the original model, including quick charging, 4K video recording, support for geo-fences, and the ability to ‘smart hover.’

Lily drone’s initial launch under startup Lily Robotics had caught consumer attention due to its autonomous technology, which supposedly enabled it to follow its operator while recording video after being thrown into the air. Though that type of feature is no longer atypical among camera drones (the autonomous following, that is), it was enough of a novelty at the time that it earned the company millions in investment dollars and pre-order sales.

By the time Lily Robotics closed up shop earlier this year, it was being sued by the San Francisco district attorney over claims that it had faked its promotional video for the drone. The company’s assets were sold off at auction and ultimately acquired by Mota Group for $ 750,000.

That brings us up to today and the launch of ‘Lily Next-Gen,’ an updated version of the Lily Drone that increases the original’s 1080p recording resolution to 4K, its still picture resolution from 12MP to 13MP, and trims its weight down from more than a kilogram to 385 grams/0.8lbs.

Some sacrifices were made to the drone, at least in comparison to what the original was purported to offer. It is no longer waterproof, and its flight time is now 18 minutes instead of 20 minutes. However, Lily Next-Gen supports an external battery, making it possible to increase that time to 36 minutes and content is stored on an included 16GB memory card.

Mota Group is currently offering two different bundles for its Lily drone via its online store: the Standard Package for $ 500 USD and the Fully Loaded Package for $ 800 USD. Shipping is available globally.

Abandoned Tobacco Factory Gets an Acid-Toned Makeover & a New Purpose

21 Mar

An abandoned, dark and dilapidated tobacco factory is ‘activated’ as a public meeting place to talk about revitalizing unused spaces through a cheerfully haphazard application of vivid, acid-toned paint. Puerto Rican artist Sofia Maldonado created ‘Kalaña’ as part of the series ‘Cromática: Caguas a Color,’ a collaboration with six other artists exploring the intersection of art, community and abandoned architecture.

You can take in the cavernous space while it’s empty and appreciate it for all its wild neon drips, sprays and strokes, taking in how much this simple application of paint has transformed the feel of the space, making it exponentially more welcoming. But Maldonado doesn’t consider the work complete until it’s buzzing with people, serving its ultimate purpose.

“My work is mainly inspired by colors and also by the Caribbean way of living; just experiencing light and color,” she says. “The project itself is not just painting an abandoned building. It’s also the idea of having an agenda. It’s a different format of how a public art piece can also become a creative and educational hub.”

Now, a circular bike ramp encourages playful interaction with the space, and there’s a small stage for speeches and performances. The space will host workshops, lectures, music, presentations and other events.

“This project was very challenging, but I think it’s exactly what I needed in order to create a new sort of dialogue that could place my work in a different context…” says Maldonado. “It allows me to bring my work into a bigger dimension and also to start a dialogue with the community and open a door for people to have a different perspective and intends to bring new meaning to what painting is, what public art could be, and also how can you integrate a community that surrounds it.”

Art Wars: Stormtrooper Helmets Get a Colorful Makeover

Art Wars Stormtrooper Helmets 1

‘Turning the dark side into the art side,’ a group of renowned contemporary artists have provided their unique spin on iconic Star Wars imagery with custom-painted stormtrooper helmets. Damien Hirst, Mr. Brainwash, Andrew Ainsworth, Joana Vasconcelos and others participated in the Art Wars display at Saatchi Gallery.

Art Wars Stormtrooper Helmets 2

Each artist was given a replica Stormtrooper helmet made from the original molds used for the first Star Wars movie in 1976, and asked to alter or decorate it however they saw fit. Banksy film subject Mr. Brainwash (‘The Borat of the Art World’) offered up yet another homage to Andy Warhol with Campbell’s Condensed Trooper Spray.

Damien Hirst, known for some of the modern art scene’s most bizarre and unconventional installations, paint his with colored polka dots reminiscent of his famous spot paintings. Artist Yinka Shonibare painted his in an African, music-themed motif with tiny glass beads, and David Bailey offered up a ‘Haitian Witch Doctor.’

Art Wars Stormtrooper Helmets 4

Nearly forty years after its debut, Star Wars continues to inspire art in all forms, including graffiti, life-sized Lego X-Wing Starfighters and even yoga poses like ‘Downward Facing Wookie.’
