Sigma cine 28mm T.1.5 lens gets a price and shipping date

Sigma has announced its new 28mm T1.5 cine lens for full frame sensor cameras will be available starting in the middle of March. The lens will cost $ 3499 but will also be offered with luminous markings, to make it easier to use in low light, for $ 4,499.

The lens is latest of a set of 10 full-frame fixed-focal-length lenses, eight of which have a T1.5 maximum aperture. The lenses have 180° focus ring rotation, and are tested using the company’s 46-million-pixel Foveon sensor.

As with the rest of Sigma’s cine series, the 28mm T1.5 FF will be available in PL, EF and E mounts. The company has also announced a new carry case for a set of five lenses that will cost $ 750. It is designed to hold the 14mm, 28mm, 40mm, 105mm and 135mm lenses, and will be available at the same time as this 28mm lens.

Sigma Ships Its 28mm T1.5 Full-Frame Cine Lens

Sigma Cine 28mm T1.5 FF is a fast and sharp T1.5 cine lens compatible with full-frame camera sensors and optimized for ultra-high-resolution 6K-8K productions. Featuring a 180-degree focus rotation, this lens is available in EF, E and PL mounts with lens support foot and cap included.

Swiss lens manufacturer Irix is expanding into the Japanese market

Swiss optics manufacturer Irix has announced it’s expanding its presence into the Japanese market.

Founded in Switzerland in 2016 by an international team of professional photographers, Irix quickly expanded into all areas of the European market and beyond, creating unique and affordable lenses, filters and accessories for photographers around the globe.

The announcement appropriately comes ahead of CP+ 2018, which is taking place in Japan. Irix will be at booth G-62 every day over the course of CP+ (February 28th through March 3rd) and says ‘each guest will be able to test every Irix product and personally speak with Irix team members.’

Weather-resistant Fujifilm 16mm F2.8 lens to ship in March for $399

The Fujifilm XF 16mm F2.8 R WR is a compact and lightweight wide-angle prime for the company’s APS-C mirrorless bodies. The lens is equivalent to 24mm when mounted on an X-series camera, such as the new X-T30. It contains a total of 10 elements (two of which are aspherical) and nine rounded aperture blades.

The lens, which weighs just 155g/5.5oz, uses a stepping motor for ‘fast and quiet autofocus’ and can focus as close as 17cm/6.7in. The lens is weather-sealed at nine points around the barrel and can function at temperatures as low as -10°C/+14°F.

The XF 16mm F2.8 R WR will be available in black in March, with the silver version to follow in May. The suggested retail price for both is $ 399.

Smartphone lens maker Largan is optimistic about multi-lens camera adoption

iPhone sales saw a drop in the last quarter of 2018 which inevitably impacts on Apple’s component suppliers. Taiwan-based Largan Precision is a major supplier of lens modules which are used in Apple’s iPhones among other devices.

According to a report in DigiTimes the company saw its fourth-quarter revenues and operating profits decrease by more than 20 percent but remains optimistic about the adoption of triple- and more lens camera modules on flagship smartphones. As a consequence Largan Precision is planning to expand its production capacity.

The good news for companies like Largan is that even with overall smartphone sales slowing down, thanks to the adoption of multi-lens cameras more cameras and lenses are required to fulfill demand. Back in June Largan CEO Adam Lin told reporters the following:

‘Generally speaking, the smartphone industry may have started to slow, but the demand for more camera lenses does not stop there…the same smartphone shipment quantity would require more camera lenses than in the past.’

In addition to Apple, Largan has also become a lens module supplier for other industry giants including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Samsung. The company also says it’s begun shipping periscope lens modules and seven-lens camera modules, so we should be looking forward to see those technologies on production smartphones sometime in the near future.

Kamlan announces new 7.5mm F3.2 fisheye lens for Micro Four Thirds systems

Chinese optical manufacturer Kamlan Optical has announced its next lens will be a 7.5mm F3.2 fisheye for the Micro Four Thirds system. The lens joins an existing line-up of manual focus primes for APS-C and MFT systems, and will be shown at the CP+ show later this month.

The FS 7.5mm f/3.2 will provide an angle of view of 160° with a construction that consists of seven elements in six groups. It will focus as close as 10cm and will have a minimum aperture of F16. The manufacturer says the lens will measure 48x58mm, will weigh 250g and it will be impossible to mount a filter in the conventional way because of the shape of the built-in hood.

Leica releases limited ‘Safari’ edition M10-P camera, Summicron-M 50mm F2 lens

Leica has announced the launch of a limited edition Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ camera and accompanying Summicron-M 50mm F2 Edition ‘Safari’ lens.

The launch of the limited edition pieces continues Leica’s tradition of olive green camera releases. In Leica’s own words, ‘Leica cameras with the olive green enamel finish were originally designed and created for hard-wearing military use, as they were seen as robust and reliable tools that consistently delivered under extreme conditions.’

The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ is identical to its less colorful counterpart in terms of specs and includes a full-grain cowhide leather carrying strap as well as a matching leather case for memory cards and credit cards, both of which were designed to ‘complement the unique aesthetic of the limited edition camera.’

The Leica Summicron-M 50mm F2 Edition ‘Safari’ lens is the first time a Leica M lens will be available in the olive green finish. Aside from the new color, the limited edition lens features a distance scale and focal length engravings that are hand-filled with red paint to ‘contrast to the other bright white engravings on the lens.’ Like the camera, this lens is identical to its black and silver counterparts.

Interestingly, the camera and lens are being sold separately with no option of getting them together as a kit. Leica says the M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ camera body is available today for $ 8,450 in a limited run of 1,500 units while the matching lens will be available on February 15, 2019 for $ 2,750 in a run of just 500 units. Both the camera body and lens are available for pre-order at B&H.

Olympus developing 150-400mm F4.5 Pro lens with built-in 1.25X teleconverter

Olympus has announced the development of a pro-level super tele-zoom lens, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro. This hefty lens will have a standard focal range of 300-800mm equiv. on Micro Four Thirds bodies, with a built-in 1.25X teleconverter increasing those numbers to 375-1000mm equiv., at the cost of 2/3-stop of light. If you want even more reach, the lens will also be compatible with Olympus’ new MC-20 2X teleconverter.

The lens will be stabilized and will work with the 5-axis IS systems built into modern Olympus cameras for extra shake reduction. As one would expect, it will be fully weather-sealed and Olympus claims it should function at temperatures as low as -10°C/+14°F.

The 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro will be available in 2020, and pricing has not yet been disclosed.

Huawei P30 Pro could come with periscope-style zoom lens

There’s a good chance we’ll see a periscope-design 10x zoom smartphone camera from Chinese manufacturer OPPO at MWC this year. However, it looks like rival Huawei could follow soon after.

According to reports from people using engineering samples, Huawei’s upcoming P-series flagship model, the P30 Pro, could come with a periscope zoom module for large optical magnification. The primary camera will likely use a new 6-series image sensor from Sony, possibly the 1/1.8″ 38MP IMX607 model.

Its sister model, the P30, is said to keep the existing triple-camera setup of the current Mate 20 Pro.

The rumors also say that both phones will now feature an OLED display, insteaf of only the Pro version. This is necessitated by a move to optical in-display fingerprint readers. Both devices will be powered by Huawei’s Kirin 980 chipset with 8GB of RAM on the standard model and 12GB on the Pro.

With its triple-cam models P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro Huawei has released two of the best camera phones in 2018 and it looks like the company has no intentions to slow down. We’ll know more in a few weeks time around MWC in Barcelona.

Video: Old projector lens adapter to A7 III body surprisingly makes for beautiful photos, bokeh

In pursuit of something different Mathieu Stern, who runs the Weird Lens Museum website, has adapted an old projector lens to fit on the front of his Sony a7 lll.

The lens he used is a Rollei 90mm f/2.4 MC that would have originally been fitted to a 35mm slide projector. Mathieu says he found the lens without its projector in a yard sale, and paid $ 5 for it. In the three minute video above Mathieu shows the lens in action and a number of photos captured in the sun that seem to have well controlled flare and low contrast.

As the lens has no iris the aperture can’t be varied from F2.4, but based on the results he attained, that doesn’t appear to be a problem. Mathieu discovered the lens fit perfectly into a M52 helicoidal tube which then allowed him to vary the apparent length of the lens so he could focus at a normal range of distances.

The helicoidal tube has an M42 screw mount, so all he needed to do then was find an M42 to Sony E mount adapter so the whole kit would fit on his a7 lll. Sure, it’s not the most elegant solution, but it got the job done. Below is a gallery of images captured with the setup and shared with permission from Mathieu.

Meike releases 50mm F1.7 full-frame budget lens for Canon EOS-R, Nikon Z cameras

Hong Kong-based company Meike has launched its 50mm F1.7 lens for the Canon EOS-R and Nikon Z6 / Z7 full-frame cameras. This manual focus full-frame lens features 6 elements in 5 groups, 0.5m / 1.6ft minimum focusing distance, a nanotechnology multi-layer coating, and 310 gram / 11oz weight.
