World’s Largest LEGO Model: Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter

24 May

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 1

Forty-two times larger than the toy set currently available in stores, this Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter is made of over five million LEGO bricks weighing a whopping 45,000 pounds. Assembled in the LEGO model shop in Kladno, Czech Republic, the model is 43 feet long and 11 feet high with a wing span of 44 feet. It was unveiled in New York City’s Times Square on May 23rd, and will be on display for Memorial Day weekend before reaching its final destination at Legoland in California.

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 2

The model had to be carefully engineered with a steel framework system in order to withstand all of the travel, breakdown and re-assembly required to transport it across the Atlantic Ocean and from one side of America to the next.

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 3

It took an international team of designers, builders, engineers, mechanics and logistics experts over a year to devise the plan that brought the massive model from concept sketches to reality. The time it took to construct the model, which is made using the same LEGO bricks sold at retail, was 17,336 hours, or about four months.

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 4

The model can seat multiple fans in the cockpit for photo opportunities, and its four rear engines light up to a glowing neon red. “We thought it would be a great idea to say ‘What if you took this, scaled it up to the size of what a real X-wing looks like, and here’s the end result,’” LEGO Master Builder Erik Varszegi told MTV Geek.

LEGO Abandonments: Home-Made Model Haunted Houses

lego abandonments

Hundreds of hours and in some cases over one hundred thousand pieces have gone into the creation of this series of seriously detailed LEGO models, each constructed to replicate the processes of decay in miniature.

lego victorian decay series

Michael Doyle makes these largely-Victorian marvels piece by piece, but of course creating something that looks intentionally chaotic is in many ways more challenging than making a conventional model home.

From the artist: “To my eyes, patterns of decay find a more pleasing path than an untouched object. A roof collapsed by the weight of snow, side shingles ripped by the force of winds, substructures rotting, insects and weather gnawing the exposed surfaces.”

lego deconstruction build process

“I can picture those windy days where a shingle flies off. Or the sudden creaking, cracking and burst of tinder giving way under snow’s heavy hand

And for anyone interested in a strange slice of abandoned-faux-home ownership, he still has prints for sale of some of the works featured here as well as his other gravity-and-time-defying LEGO creations.

Villa Savoye: Classic Corbu House Comes to Life in LEGO

04 Sep

One of the most iconic buildings of the 20th Century, the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier outside of Paris, France has long been a symbol of the International Style in Modern Architecture – now one you can rebuild at home in LEGO form.

In fact, a model version is perhaps the best way to understand this structure, as its accomplishments are not all visible from ground-level photographs – particularly the compelling sectional progression and three-dimensionally-complex rooftop deck.

The structure embodies Corbu’s core Five Points regarding residential design, being (1) supported by structural columns and elevated to create space below, (2) topped by a garden, reclaiming additional outdoor space displaced by the building, (3) open floor plans, (4) horizontal fenestration and (5) freely-designed facades. Of the Architecture Landmark Series by LEGO, this may be the most instructive model to date for young aspiring architects (ages 12 and up, that is!).
