  • Lytro CEO admits layoffs, promises breakthrough products in 2014

    Lytro CEO Jason Rosenthal has acknowledged that the company made a ‘small number’ of layoffs earlier this year and that there are some ‘kinks’ to be worked out with its unique ‘light field’ camera. Meanwhile, according to an article by tech blog SFGate, industry sources report that the Lytro camera ‘isn’t selling well so far’, due to its price and lack of appeal to professional photographers.   • SunTimes/DarkTimes blog highlights effect of Chicago Sun-Times layoffs

    A new Tumblr blog, SunTimes/DarkTimes is documenting the effects of the recent layoffs at the photo department of the Chicago Sun-Times. The blog is posting comparisons highlighting the difference between photo coverage in the Sun-Times to that of the Chicago Tribune. The results certainly seem to reinforce the views of many commentators who warned that the Sun-Times’ photo coverage would suffer as a result of the cost-cutting.   • Sun-Times photographer uses iPhone to document life after layoffs

    Rob Hart was amongst the 28 members of the Chicago Sun-Times photography staff laid off last week. He’s been pointedly documenting his experience via Tumblr ever since, deliberately opting to use his iPhone over his Nikon D3 because, as he says of himself in his blog, he was “replaced with a reporter with an iPhone, so he is documenting his new life with an iPhone, but with the eye of a photojournalist trained in storytelling.” We spoke to him about it for connect.dpreview.com.

  • After layoffs, Sun-Times expects reporters to become mobile photographers

    It seems the Chicago Sun-Times is counting on its remaining employees to become mobile photographers. After laying off its entire 28-person photography staff yesterday, the newspaper has announced mandatory training for remaining employees on ‘iPhone photography basics’. That’s according to media writer Robert Feder. Feder quotes a memo from managing editor Craig Newman: ‘In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be working with all editorial employees to train and outfit you as much as possible to produce the content we need’.   • Hipstamatic moving ‘full force ahead’ despite major layoffs

    Hipstamatic denies that the layoffs of five employees signifies the death knell for the longtime mobile photography favorite. Yesterday the Hipstamatic team was reduced from a team of 11 to a mere six employees through a restructuring effort and questions quickly arose about the future of the app known for its toy camera capabilities. ‘We’re still moving full force ahead — the original team that built Hipstamatic is still here, and remains deeply committed to continuing to make great products that inspire our community and the world,’ said Molli Sullivan, Hipstamatic’s director of communications.
