Last Chance to Save 25% on our Portrait Lighting eBook [and Go into the Draw for a $1000 Prize]

02 Oct

Portraits_lighting_cover

Just over a month ago we launched our brand new eBook – Portraits: Lighting the Shot – an eBook about Lighting Portraits (as the name suggests).

The 25% off Early Bird special and bonus competition end in just over 72 hours time.

When we launched this eBook we knew it was on a topic we get a lot of questions about but we didn’t realise just how much positive feedback we’d get about it.

What’s People Are Saying About This eBook

“If you want to limit yourself to only ever shooting natural light portraits, be my guest. If you want to level-up your portrait photography skills by learning how to light your subjects well, you can’t go past this book!” – Rowan Sims

“It is amazing!  If you are a portrait photographer this book is a must.  I read this for the first time on Friday, and was able to put what I learned into practice at a wedding I shot the following Sunday.  You don’t want to miss this one.” – photographytipshq.com

“My overall opinion of this book is that it is very worth it. If you already have some experience in portrait photography, and want to take it to the next level by introducing lighting. You will learn a lot from this very experienced professional.” – Pedro Mendes

That’s just scratching the surface of the lovely things we’ve heard about Portraits: Lighting the Shot.

Last Day to Update Your RSS Reader! RIP Google Reader

02 Jul

After today, Google Reader’s officially gone.

It’s a sadface situation (Google Reader was there for you day-in, day-out!), but you know what’s even more sadface?

Not being able to keep up with all of the best Photojojo stuff! Like our DIY projects, guides, photo inspiration, and new store goodies.

Good thing it’s an easy fix! All you have to do is switch to a new reader.

What other readers are out there?

Digg just made an awesome new reader.

Feedly‘s a good one, too.

Both will automatically switch your entire Google feed in one click.

How do I add Photojojo to my RSS feed?

To do it manually, log in to your reader. You’ll see an “add” or “+” button.

Simply click on that button. Then copy & paste this URL: http://www.photojojo.com/content/feed

If you’re using Feedly, just hit this button! follow us in feedly Now wait for confetti to fall from the ceiling.

Wait, what’s an RSS feed/reader?

It’s a way of staying informed with updates happening on Photojojo’s site (and other sites).

Just list which websites you want to keep an eye on, and your RSS reader will show you the most recent posts from those sites all in one place.

You can get fancy and categorize them, or keep it simple and have them in one steady scroll. Read more about RSS.

Last Call: 11 Drunk Dry Abandoned Liquor Stores

26 May

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned liquor stores
These 11 abandoned liquor stores are hangovers, as it were, from an era when Mom & Pop stores sold the kind of products Mom & Pop forbade you from buying.

Broadway The Hard Way

Minneapolis’ Broadway Liquor Outlet may be outta liquor but it’s not outta luck, at least not yet. The striking photo above was taken by David Toles of the StarTribune. Toles’ dramatically tilted composition features the store silhouetted against an ominously cloudy sky, though this year no tornadoes descended to finish their destructive work.

Greening Of Detroit

Detroit abandoned liquor store garden shed(images via: Click Click Click)

If a tree can grow in Brooklyn, an abandoned liquor store in Detroit can be reborn as a garden shed. Not just ANY garden shed, mind you, but a pastoral-ly repainted edifice emblazoned with environmentally friendly graphics instead of the graffiti one more typically finds in today’s Motor City. We’ll drink to that!

Andra Johnson in association with The Greening Of Detroit volunteered for the re-purposing project which took place on July 30th, 2010. It must have been thirsty work cleaning, prepping and painting the mid-century building under the hot summer sun. If only there was a store that sold cold, refreshing beverages nearby… oh.

Florida Dry

St. Mary's Liquors Nassau County Florida(images via: Southern Exposure)

The former St. Mary’s Liquors store on U.S. 17 in Nassau County, Florida, molders away quietly alongside the also-abandoned Riverside Motel about a mile south of the Georgia state border. Historically, Georgia generally prohibited the sale of alcohol on Sunday – counties could hold local referendums to decide the issue but until recently the results usually upheld the status quo. That attitude is beginning to change, however, and if the county just north of Nassau flipped from dry to wet Sundays, it could explain St. Mary’s Liquors’ sinking fatally into a sea of red ink.

Too Big To Fail?

massive abandoned liquor store(image via: Pete Jelliffe)

Bigger isn’t always better, just ask the owners of this ridiculously massive abandoned liquor store – if you can find them. Simply stocking the multistory edifice would cost a king’s ransom and if there should ever be an earthquake, the tsunami of spilled alcohol (cirrhosis of the river?) surging out the front doors would be enough to make even the sternest teetotaler weep… especially if it then caught on fire.

Europe’s Last Dictator

28 Jan

Irina is the sister of imprisoned Belarusian presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov. Through her eyes this doc charts the violent crackdown that followed the 2010 rigged elections and its dreadful aftermath. Powerful, award-winning photography captures Orwellian images of brute force used against unarmed men and women. We see the state-sponsored torture, murder and kidnap that defines Belarus today. A rare glimpse into Europe’s most repressive state. “We formed a group to lead negotiations with the government, but the troops were called”, Iryna Khalip, journalist and wife of presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov, says over the phone. “My husband was badly beaten, we’re on the way to the hospital.” Suddenly her voice becomes raised with panic. “Looks like we’re being arrested. We’re on the ground…They’re hitting my face!” She screams and then the phone cuts out. This episode is part of Lukashenko’s promise to “wring the necks” of all those who joined the opposition during the elections. Iryna Khalip and Andrei Sannikov were imprisoned after this arrest. Irina Bogdanova, Andrei’s sister, has lived in England for 18 years. The other side of Europe, she has turned her house into a refugee camp for all those who have escaped Lukashenko’s violent crackdown that night. A crackdown that it appears Lukashenko may have premeditated. Staggering images of the protest show riot police beating their shields in unison, and bloodied, disorientated protestors. “There was no resistance

Bryan & Carmen’s Last Jive 2009

…in Hong Kong anyway. I’m sure it was just one stop of a world tour.

A video I made for my girlfriend project in school. It talks about sex. Maybe love. I used a Canon 60D with the 18-55 basic kit lens, only. I fell like I’m going to start doing narratives, with better equipment. Thanks for watching, leave your comments bellow and subscribe!
