We’ve had a pre-production example in the office for a couple of days and have prepared a hands-on preview, to which we’ll add a samples gallery when the promised production example arrives.

Just Posted: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V review

14 May

sony_dschx200v.png

Just posted: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V in-depth review. The second review expanded from Jeff Keller’s work at the Digital Camera Resource Page looks at Sony’s latest full-size superzoom camera. The Sony HX200V combines the company’s latest 18MP back-lit CMOS sensor with a 30x zoom lens giving a 27-810mm equivalent range. There’s image stabilization, as you’d expect for such a long zoom range and, as indicated by the ‘V’ in the model name, it also has built-in GPS. So does this add up to a perfect vacation camera or an unwieldy confection? Read the full review to find out.

Just Posted: In-depth Nikon D800 review

09 May

nikon_d800.png

We’ve just posted our Nikon D800 review. At 36MP, the D800 is the highest resolution camera you can buy without making the step up to medium format, it’s also one of the first DSLRs to offer uncompressed video output. Despite these drastic increases in capability over the D700, Nikon’s latest full-frame offering will be immediately familiar to any one who’s shot with one of the company’s high-end cameras. So what’s the D800 like to shoot with and does all that resolution render its competition redundant?

We’ve just posted a gallery of real-world sample images shot using a production-standard Canon EOS 5D Mark III. We’ve been out shooting with a range of lenses and in a variety of lighting conditions with Canon’s latest full-frame DSLR, superseding our preview gallery that was shot with a pre-production camera. The gallery includes some shots processed with Adobe Camera Raw and a shot using the camera’s multiple exposure feature.

Just Posted: Canon PowerShot G1 X review

30 Mar

canon_g1x.png

We’ve just posted our review of the Canon PowerShot G1 X. Rather than going down the mirrorless camera route, Canon has opted to create a large sensor zoom compact. The result is the G1 X, a camera that offers a near-APS-C-sized sensor in a slightly enlarged G-series body. With its 28-112mm equivalent, F2.8-5.8 stabilized lens, it offers similar capability to an entry-level DSLR in a more convenient package. So how does the G1 X stack-up as a more compact Rebel replacement? Read our review to find out.

Just posted: Nikon D800 first impressions and ‘real world’ samples

25 Mar

D800_intro_sm.jpg

We’ve just got hold of Nikon’s 36MP D800 full-frame DSLR and have been seeing what it’s like to shoot with. We’ve shot it alongside the D3S to see exactly what effect trebling the pixel count has. In addition we look at the handling, its video shooting controls and how it behaves with vintage lenses. To put our studio samples in context we’ve also included a 40-image real-world samples gallery and a look at the camera’s low-light performance. You may be surprised by the outcome.

25 Mar

We’ve updated our Canon EOS 5D Mark III preview with a selection of real world samples images and more detailed descriptions of the camera’s behavior. We’ve shot a range of subjects under different lighting types and light levels to see how the latest 22MP performs. These shots were taken using a pre-production camera running final firmware, so may not be 100% representative of final image quality (though Canon allowing us to publish them suggests they’re not far off). We’re expecting a production-standard camera and will be adding studio test shots next week.

Just posted: Our six page review of the now-less-expensive Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4. Adobe has released and halved the price of the latest version of its workflow and image editing software, and we’ve prepared an in-depth review exploring the changes. Along with Book and Map modules, and a revised editing workflow, Lightroom 4 brings Raw file support for a number of recently announced cameras, including the Canon EOS-1D X and Nikon D4. Are the changes in Lightroom 4 worth the upgrade for current users? Find out in our detailed review.

04 Mar

nikon_d4.png

We’ve just published images of our standard test scene taken with Nikon’s latest professional DSLR, the 16MP D4. These have been shot using a production-standard D4 and, as usual, include both Raw and JPEG images with all original files available for download. Added them to our comparison tool means they can be called-upon from other reviews or the standalone comparison tool. For this test we used the recently-announced Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 and we’ll be publishing ‘real world’ galleries both the D4 and 85mm over the coming days.
