iFixit Tears down iPad Mini – finds it’s not easy to repair

01 Nov

ipadminiteardown.jpg

No-one takes gadgets apart quite like the guys at iFixit.com and they’ve just got their hands on Apple’s latest tablet, the pint-sized iPad Mini. Basically an iPad 2 in a smaller form factor, the Mini goes on sale tomorrow in the US. Thanks to a whole lot of glue holding the thing together and expensive battery replacement cost, the iPad Mini earns a low repairability score of 2 out of 10 on the iFixit scale. Click through for some sample images from the teardown and a link to the full, gory experience over at ifixit.com.

Low-res iPad Mini likely a disappointment for photographers in Apple refresh

24 Oct

iPadMini.png

Apple has announced an updated iPad but its low-resolution iPad Mini is likely to be a disappointment for photographers looking to do precision work. While the fourth-generation iPad features a 263 pixel-per-inch ‘Retina’ display, the 7.9″ (20cm)  iPad Mini makes do with a 163 pixel-per-inch panel with a quarter of the pixel count (just 1024 x 768, rather than its big brother’s 2048 x 1536 pixels). The iPad Mini’s screen is step behind the latest panels, such as the 217ppi, 1280 x 800 pixel display in the less expensive Nexus 7. The fourth-gen iPad also features a faster A6X processor that is claimed to offer twice the performance, plus an HD (720p) front-facing camera.

Connect: Does the iPad have a role to play in your photo workflow?

16 Oct

iPad3.jpg

Since the launch of the original iPad, Apple’s tablet has held great appeal for photographers as a way to show off their work on a sleek, portable, stylish device. But, with its high resolution ‘Retina’ display, does it deserve to be taken more seriously, and given a chance to earn its place in your photographic workflow?

Complete our survey for the chance to win an iPad 2

26 Nov

pmalogo.gif?v=1230?v=1230?v=1230

US photographic trade body PMA and dpreview.com are conducting a survey looking for the views of dedicated amateur photographers. The ten minute survey asks about your photographic use, the features you’d like to see in cameras and your use and experience of photo sharing sites and printing services (as well as helping us make dpreview a better place). It aims to get a clearer understanding of what committed non-professional photographers want from their cameras and related services and may even result in those things getting a bit better. Responses will be discussed at the forthcoming 6Sight conference. As a reward one lucky respondent will be sent a shiny new Apple iPad 2.

3D-App: Head-Tracking mit iPad- und iPhone-Frontkamera

21 Sep

i3D is an overview of Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP) on iOS devices. HCP uses the front camera of the device to track the face of the user in real time. This information tells the app how the user is looking at the display. The app updates the perspective of the 3D scene accordingly, giving the user the illusion that he looks at a small window. i3D contains several 3D scenes that you can observe with HCP. It only relies on face tracking. It does not use the accelerometers or the gyroscopes. The face tracking system does not detect and track the face in every lighting condition. Read the instructions in the app to get a good tracking. Head-Coupled Perspective does not create a stereoscopic display! It provides a kind of monocular 3D display: the same picture is seen by both eyes. In the future, it might be combined with a stereoscopic display for a better 3D effect. i3D has been developed by Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay at the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) Research Group of the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory (LIG), University Joseph Fourier (UJF).
