Instagram is testing a ‘Regram’ button and other major feature updates

30 Nov

Instagram is testing a bunch of new features, including one very intriguing and long-awaited button that will put several 3rd party apps out of business: the Regram. The new features were published by The Next Web, which was able to obtain screenshots of several feature updates that are still only being tested with small groups of users.

First things first though: Regram. Like Tumblr’s Reblog or Facebook’s Share, regramming would allow Instagram users to share another user’s photo or video with their own followers. Third party apps already allow for a cumbersome version of this, but a built-in button has never existed… until now.

In addition to the Regram, TNW found that Instagram may soon:

  • Allow you to search for and add GIFs to your profile or Instagram Story.
  • Allow iOS users to join a Beta program that will give you early access to upcoming versions of the app.
  • Add an Archive feature for Stories (you can already archive regular posts)
  • Create a “Closest Friends List” that lets you share posts or stories with a smaller more intimate group.
  • Search by Top Hashtag and Top Emoji
  • Follow hashtags, not just other profiles

There is also an “Add Coffee” button that mysteriously popped up in the share page (the same page where you write your caption, select the social media accounts you’d like to share to, and click post). Nobody seems to have any idea what that’s about.

To see screenshots of all these features, head over to The Next Web’s report by clicking here. And let us know what you think of these new features in the comments down below.

Photographer sues Bruno Mars for posting childhood photo of himself on Instagram

29 Nov

Singer Bruno Mars recently shared a childhood photo of himself from 1989, and now the photographer behind the photo, Catherine McGann, is suing him for copyright infringement. The image was shared by Mars back in June on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, amassing more than a million ‘likes’ and thousands of comments.

As of this writing, it’s still live on the pop star’s Instagram account:

A post shared by Bruno Mars (@brunomars) on

The lawsuit, which was first surfaced via TMZ, is being leveled against both Mars and record label Warner Music. According to McGann, Mars never asked for permission to share the image on his social media accounts, and the lawsuit seeks any and all profits made from the image’s use, plus damages.

A look at McGann’s Instagram page shows that she posted a version of the image with a copyright notice on November 3rd, 2016.

Instagram testing feature the lets you follow hashtags

16 Nov

Instagram is making it easier for users to follow subjects they care about by introducing support for following hashtags. In its present form, Instagram only supports following accounts, but a new test some users have spotted extends this ability to individual hashtags, presenting the tagged content in the follower’s feed.

The feature was first brought to light on Twitter, where social media consultant Pippa Akram posted this screenshot:

In its current iteration, Instagram allows users to tag content with hashtags, such as #city or #landscape, and other users can search for content with those tags and see it in the search results. Adding the ability to follow hashtags directly would allow users to revisit their favorite hashtags again and again without having to search for them every time. A pretty useful feature, especially if you regularly visit Instagram for photography inspiration and ideas in your particular genre.

Unfortunately, for now, Instagram has kept quiet about this new feature, but if and when it rolls out to all users, we’ll let you know.

This free app finally lets you post to Instagram from your computer

12 Oct

Photographer and programmer Felix Sun has designed an app called Windowed that finally allows you to post images to your Instagram account straight from your computer—no tablet, smartphone, or strange loophole workaround required.

Instagram is a great way to build an audience and even earn yourself a commission or two, but the app’s mobile-only upload has been a thorn in every professional photographer’s side from the very beginning. Most of us don’t shoot our best photos on our phones, and many camera brands don’t have the best systems (read: some downright suck) in place for getting those photos off of your main camera and onto your smartphone.

Enter Windowed, a simple app that allows you to upload images straight to Instagram from your Mac or PC. And best of all, the application is open source and “100% free.”

The app is able to provide this functionality thanks to a semi-recent update to Instagram that allows you to post photos from a mobile browser. Under normal circumstances, you’re unable to access this functionality from your Mac or PC; Windowed pretends to be a mobile browser to get around this limitation.

There have been workarounds posted online for ages that make it possible to post to Instagram from your desktop, but this is the first implementation we’ve seen that’s truly easy. In fact, it’s no different than posting to IG using Chrome or Safari on your smartphone.

To learn more about Windowed, see the source code, or download it for yourself, head over to the app’s website by clicking here.

Instagram celebrates 800M users with update that takes on comment trolls

29 Sep
Photo: Instagram

Instagram officially hit 800 million users this week, but the Facebook-owned company has no interest in resting on its laurels. In fact, alongside its “hey, we added another 100M users… no big deal” announcement, the company continued its crusade against comment trolls by launching the most powerful commenting controls the app has seen yet.

The numbers bit was only mentioned briefly in Instagram’s news release. “Our community has grown to 800 million, with 500 million using it every day,” writes Instagram. “It’s more important than ever to strengthen our commitment to safety and kindness.”

And so the company has added some interesting new comment controls. Namely: filtering who can comment on your posts if you have a public account, and the ability to block individual accounts from commenting on your pictures. The controls look like this in your Settings:

In addition to the updated commenting controls—which is just the latest in a series of ‘safety and kindness’ updates the company has released—Instagram also added anonymous reporting of Live Video to their mental health resources. If you are viewing a live broadcast that has you worried about the poster, you can anonymously report the post, which will show the person “a message offering help with options to talk to a helpline, reach out to a friend or get other tips and support.”

To learn more about these updates or see them in action for yourself, head over to the Instagram blog or update your iOS and Android apps to the latest version.

Instagram is testing a four-photo grid, and some users are freaking out

20 Sep

Facebook-owned image sharing behemoth Instagram (heard of ’em?) is testing a new change to its app, and the internet is collectively freaking out about it. According to some users, Instagram is already rolling out a new 4-across profile grid to replace the current 3-across setup that people know and (apparently) love.

Not a huge deal, you might think, but many photographers and casual users alike use that 3-across grid to create interesting mosaics that help their profile stand out. And those people are not reacting well to news of the test:

Of course, by now Instagram is used to these kinds of reactions—it seems like every change they make is met by a deluge of fear, anxiety and threats of abandonment. The algorithmic feed has been a boon for the company, but it set the community into a panic; and even smaller changes like the ability to block comments automatically or by keyword are usually met with at least some skepticism.

But for those photographers who have built their Instagram ‘brand’ in part by making creative use of the 3-across grid on their profile, this change would represent a swift kick to the mosaic.

Instagram Stories arrive on desktop, will soon support mobile web uploads

03 Sep
Instagram Stories on Mobile Web… coming soon.

Instagram has revealed that it will soon support uploading Stories via mobile web browsers. With the new functionality, Instagram users will have the option of uploading videos and images to their Instagram Stories using a tablet or smartphone’s web browser, such as Safari or Chrome, in lieu of the Instagram app itself.

Mobile web uploading for Stories will arrive at some point in the next handful of months, but ahead of that Instagram has launched its Stories product on desktop and mobile web browsers. Anyone can now view Instagram Stories using either browser type, whereas previously the feature was limited to the Instagram app.

However, if you’re hoping Stories in their full glory will be coming to the desktop, we’re sorry to say they will not. The company confirmed to The Verge that it has no plans to bring Stories uploading to desktop browsers.

Instagram adds portrait and landscape support for multi-photo posts

31 Aug

Instagram has expanded format support for its multi-image posts, letting users create these posts using portrait or landscape images or videos in addition to square format content. The change gives users more flexibility in choosing which content is shared on the social network, Instagram explains, although it is still limited: only one format (portrait or landscape) can be used per multi-photo post.

The restriction is in place to ensure users get a ‘smooth and consistent’ experience when viewing multi-content posts, says Instagram. As such, users can create a multi-image post using only portrait format, only landscape format, or only square format, but not a mixture of two or three.

The updated feature arrives today in the Instagram version 12 update for Android and iOS.

Instagram update adds threaded comment replies

20 Aug
Threaded replies are a small update, but regular users will really appreciate it.

Instagram just launched a minor update that regular users will really enjoy: threaded comments. Previously, comments on the Facebook-owned photo sharing app were all lumped together, only @-replies denoting who was talking to who. Now, when you reply to a comment it will automatically create a new thread.

“Comment threads help you keep track of conversations and make it easy to respond to a specific thread,” writes Instagram in its press release. “This update will make your feed an even better place to share interests, get inspired and connect with others.”

To take advantage of the new feature, download Instagram from the iTunes App Store or Google Play, or update your current app to the latest version.

Instagram and Snapchat expected to hit $10B and $3B in revenue by 2019

10 Aug

Instagram and Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, are expected to see massive revenue growth over the next couple years, according to a research note released by Citi Research. If Citi’s predictions pan out, Instagram will reach almost $ 10 billion in revenue by 2019, while the smaller but highly popular Snapchat may hit the $ 3 billion mark. The reasons for each apps’ growth differ, however.

As far as Instagram goes, the company enjoys a massive user base of about 500 million, which is largely behind the anticipated growth. Snapchat, by comparison, boasts a much smaller user base of about 170 million, but those users spend much more time on the app than Instagram’s users. According to Citi, Snapchat users are spending more than 30 minutes on the app per day on average.

Both companies are facing an increasing number of competitors, Snapchat in the form of cloned features like Facebook and Instagram Stories, whereas Instagram is competing with the likes of VSCO, EyeEm, and similar platforms. Still, for now it doesn’t look like either of these photo sharing behemoths have anything to fear but… well… each other.
