Idaho gets the first International Dark-Sky Reserve in the United States

21 Dec

The United States has established its very first International Dark-Sky Reserve—one of 12 found around the globe, and now third largest in the world. The designation was granted to the Central Idaho Dark-Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), which says the region offers 3600km² / 1400mi² of “exceptional or distinguished quality of night sky, view of the stars and nocturnal environment.”

The Central Idaho Dark-Sky Reserve IDA designation is a milestone for American conservation, not only protecting wildlife in the region from the negative effects of artificial light, but also giving visitors from around the world another place to view the pure night sky.

The US reserve and its international designation is the by-product of about 20 years of policy and hard work by Idaho residents, businesses, and officials, according to the IDA. The collective worked to reduce artificial light in central Idaho and agreed to manage artificial light in the region henceforth.

To get the special designation, Central Idaho land managers formed partnerships with IDA, committing to help preserve the quality of the pure, unadulterated nighttime environment. Ketchum, Idaho Mayor Nina Jonas talked about that, saying in a statement to the IDA:

This is the culmination of a lot of work, important policy decisions and commitment by so many to manage our light pollution. We’re pleased what this says about the commitment our communities have shown to protecting our environment and spectacular window to the universe.

Central Idaho didn’t only win an International Dark-Sky Reserve designation, though. IDA says it has granted this reserve its Gold Tier rating, meaning that the reserve offers one of the darkest night skies among all Dark-Sky Reserves. Information on the Central Idaho Dark-Sky Reserve, including a clear sky chart and map, are available here.

It probably hasn’t made your landscape photography bucket list just yet, but there’s a good reason to visit Idaho. In fact, there are many good reasons, and photographer Michael Bonocore spent this spring traveling around his new home state, capturing the grandeur of the local landscapes.

Using the Visit Idaho website as his guide, Bonocore trekked all over the state and found nine ‘must-see’ destinations for all of the photographers out there. Especially in the spring, these spots offer “a perfect mix of still snow-capped mountain peaks, vibrant wildflowers and warming temperatures.”

From Sun Valley, to the town of Stanley (population 62), to Redfish Lake and beyond, he put his findings and some stunning photographs together into a photo essay, which you can read over on Resource Travel. And if you want a taste before you jet off, check out the slideshow above.

Change of scenery: How a photographer’s trip to Idaho inspired a big move

What could convince a California native to leave the state’s famously beautiful coasts and sunshine behind? For photographer and Resource Travel editor Michael Bonocore, a visit to Idaho’s pristine wilderness and towering mountains was enough. He recently spent some time traveling and photographing the state, from bustling Boise to the untouched powder of the Selkirk Mountains.

The photographic opportunities were so rich and the possibilities for outdoor adventure so abundant, Bonocore decided to make a full-time move to the Gem State. See some of his photos here and read the full account of his trip on Resource Travel.

The Architecture of Susan Desko — 30 Cheval, Bellevue, Idaho

Last month I had a wonderful opportunity to photograph one of the great unfinished homes of America, 30 Cheval in Bellevue, Idaho.

The house was designed by architect Susan Desko, a local Sun Valley, architect, who was one of the designers who worked on the famous Frank Gehry project, the Lewis House. For those of you who haven’t seen the documentary on Gehry’s work, A Constructive Madness: Wherein Frank Gehry and Peter Lewis Spend a Fortune and a Decade… End Up With Nothing and Change the World, on the Lewis House, definitely check it out. Susan and her work with Gehry are featured in that film.

30 Cheval is a remarkable home that was started but never completed, an unfinished masterpiece in the middle of Idaho. Construction has stopped on the home at this point leaving behind this grand structure high in the mountains of America. Hopefully someday someone will purchase it and finish Susan’s bold designs. The home has spectacular views, especially from the olympic length swimming pool up on the roof cantilevered above the home.

I’ll upload more photos of the home over time, but here are 25 photographs of this amazing property now. Thanks to my pal Scott Jordan for taking me to this fantastical work of art and introducing me to Susan.
