House of Metal: 15 Steel and Aluminum-Clad Residences

Durable, reflective and often becoming even more beautiful with exposure to the elements, metal is an unusual choice in exterior treatment for houses. These 15 metallic residences range from sculptural raised houses made of welded steel to sleek modern homes in Japan covered in privacy-enhancing perforated metal screens.

What looks like a quilted metallic blanket has been applied to the exterior of a private home in a small town near Tokyo. ‘Soft-Hard Aluminum House‘ features a cantilevered gable end and an unusual aluminum cladding with a slightly squishy texture. While the shape fits in with the more conventional houses of the neighborhood, the metallic treatment certainly makes the home stand out.

Steel House by Robert Bruno, Texas

Metallic Houses Steel Bruno

Architect Robert Bruno’s rusting Steel House is an icon and landmark in Lubbock, Texas. The sculptural home resembles a giant pig, and is made of 110 tons of steel, with an impressively cavernous interior. It was originally built in 1973, but over the years, Bruno continued to refine it, adding rooms and stories simply by welding on additional metal.

MVRDV’s gravity-defying Balancing Barn in Suffolk, England is another cantilevered structure with reflective metal cladding that mimics the look of bricks. The sheeting was chosen because it references the local building vernacular and reflects the surrounding nature over the changing seasons.

Cloudy House by Takao Shiotsuka, Oita, Japan

It may be named ‘Cloudy House‘ for its stormy gray color, but this gabled home in Oita, Japan looks quite bright and sunny when it’s nice outside. The entire exterior is covered in corrugated metal. The home features a tunnel that runs through its center to split the ground floor into two halves, each with their own entrance.

Reinforcing the rural context of corrugated iron, James Stockwell’s Croft House addresses “the core idea of shelter in an exposed environment” for a house with coastal vistas that blends into the land unobtrusively.

Hydraulic Lift to Save House on Stilts from Future Flooding

A Modernist classic, the famous Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe was originally built with a raised platform but that has not managed to save it from floods, leading its custodians to an extreme solution: jacking the building up when the neighboring river rises.

Per the Chicago Tribune, options under consideration include moving the home back away from the water’s edge or raising it permanently in place, but both of these (argue advocates of the third alternative) fail to preserve the structure in its planned context.

As ArchDaily reports, “The mechanism itself would use a series of trusses, which ordinarily lie flat on their side, but are raised to a vertical position by hydraulic rams when a flood is detected. The cost of installing the system is estimated at $ 2.5 million – $ 3 million.”

The cheapest option would be to move the house away from the river, but that, in turn, takes away its key views and a critical driver of its raised and cantilevered form – imagine, if you will, shifting Falling Water away from the river over which it sits.

The favored option might sound far-fetched, and raises preservation questions, like: what lengths should we go to in order to save widely-studied buildings, and how justified is their position in history books in the first place if their structural design features such flaws?

Tiny Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired House Atop Miner’s Ruins

Gleaming glass, oxidized steel and matte black wood contrast with the rough concrete ruins of an old miner’s shelter found in the desert near Scottsdale, Arizona. ‘Miner’s Shelter‘ was designed and built by Dave Frazee of Broken Arrow Workshop as part of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture’s student shelter program, and is situated to take advantage of the remote natural environment.

Intended to serve as a rustic shelter for respite and relaxation rather than as a permanent dwelling, the off-grid structure is just large enough to accommodate a bed, sticking to the limited size of the concrete pad discovered there. The existing concrete chimney was incorporated into the design, which frames views of adjacent mountains and the Phoenix Valley.

The backside of the shelter is covered in oxidized steel panels that help it blend into the warm desert tones of its setting. In the distance are several similar student shelters, some still in use and some in ruins.

Wright spent every winter of the final two decades of his life camping in a tent-like structure in the desert before starting the tradition of building permanent, modern structures through Taliesin West, the Arizona branch of his architecture school.  The program “demonstrates how climate, building materials, site orientation, and client needs and preferences inform design choices based on the tenets of Wright’s organic architecture.”

Aviator’s Villa: Ultramodern House Made of Airplane Parts

A long, narrow ultramodern residence envisioned as a composition of disassembled aviation components offers an evocative home for a retired pilot. ‘Aviator’s Villa’ by Urban Office Architecture is elevated on a hill between a lake and a swimming pool, and exposed on three sides so it feels like it’s floating on air.

The cantilevered master bedroom juts out from the main volume of the home like the nose of an airplane, hovering over other ‘floating’ volumes conceived as abstracted clouds. You might expect a smoother silhouette from a plane-inspired structure, but the architects deliberately gave it a “twist and torque” to simulate the way a plane steers through air currents.

The house consists of three primary spaces including a thirty-foot-tall living area and kitchen, the 40-foot bedroom, and the library. Between the two separate structures are a series of hidden spaces revealed during the ascent up a circular staircase.

Throughout the villa, little details echo those found within a plane, like the riveted metal frames around the windows, and perforated metal screens  that filter harsh direct sunlight the way clouds do in the sky. The sharp, geometric panes of glass that make up the windows are meant to recall the angles found within a cockpit.

After OZ: Dorothy’s Storm-Ravaged House Remade of Scrap

In a remarkable 24-hour collaboration, a series of artists banded together to build a replica of the infamous house from the Wizard of OZ – that ill-fated structure that carried Dorothy Gale so far from Kansas.

This fast-paced process employed by the Resisting Entropy team was intentional, designed both to show what dedicated teamwork can accomplish in a limited amount of time but also meant to emulate the chaotic conditions of a wild twister.

No Place Like Home was hosted by the owner of Asymmetric Arts in Rockland Maine, Jared Cowan (special thanks to contributing artist Eric Leppanen for the tip – full list of artists below).

Also part of the plan: the installation was created piecemeal, then put together into intermediate sections before being transported to the site and assembled as a whole.

Starting with a previously-gathered scrap pile, each artist drew what they needed along the way, imbuing the separate sections with individual twists and quirks.

In the past, Resisting Entropy has brought together artists to create a series of independent works, but No Place Like Home gave them a curious and novel combination of individual liberty and a cohesive goal.

Contributing artists included: Jared Cowan, Andy White, Bethany Engstrom, David Allen, Eric Leppanen, Trelawney O’Brien, Alexis Iammarino, Siglinde Langholz, Owen Cartwright, Greta Van Campen, Susan Smith, Jonathan Laurence, Ashley Seelig, Sean Taylor and Kelsey Floyd. “Resisting Entropy is an exercise in creating collaboratively within a condensed timeframe and shared space. Participating artists are presented with a large volume of discarded materials and over 24 hours, live and work together to transform the volume into unique and unpredictable artworks.”

Despite the wind-strewn look, the structural design had to be carefully checked: “The base structure had to be strong enough to not fall due to a strong gust of wind.  No one is allowed in the building due to safety concerns but people can get close enough to look into the windows therefore some of the crew focused on structural integrity.  The design of the roof on the other hand had to be light and airy so that a crew of four or five could lift each section into place. Notice the skeleton of the roof structure, made with the thinnest boards possible.”

Hanging Hotel: Camp in a Trunk-Friendly Tree House Retreat

Without harming the forest that supports it, this streamlined tree house design is stabilized by a central trunk but ultimately suspended from the branches above to minimize negative environmental impacts.

Tree houses typically rely on being either attached to trunks or translating their loads to grounded supports – in short: they either harm trees or are not truly ‘treehouses’. Farrow Partnership Architects proposes a middle path, relying on the tree without constricting its growth.

And while the structures are open-air for a camping-style experience, they are not lacking in luxuries (at least in terms of what one normally expects from architecture in trees: bedroom, bathroom and living room spaces complete with composting toilet and graywater shower.

The streamlined bent-wood structures are designed to be oriented around site-specific views, hung with thin metal wires and covered in semi-translucent material to provide a degree of shade and privacy while letting in natural light during the day (and becoming a kind of glowing lantern at night).

This series of sky villas is set to be deployed in a national park near Toronto, Canada. Plans call for them to be sufficiently spaced out so that residents of one structure will not see the other, but simply the forest through the trees.

Not in Kansas: Black House Lands in Front of Oz Museum

The childhood home of artist Ian Strange has literally landed right in front of the Art Gallery of South Australia as if it were picked up by a tornado and plunked there, Wizard of Oz style. The striking matte black structure is a detailed recreation of the 1920s suburban Australian home Strange grew up in, down to the scrolled ornamentation on the porch and a spigot clinging to one exterior wall.

Installed for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, the installation makes an intentional reference to Dorothy’s Kansas home and the jarring visual of it crashing in a place where it doesn’t belong.

This visual is a nod to both the continued intrusion of Western pop culture into Australia, and the disconnected nature of suburbia, a recurring theme in Strange’s work.

Strange previously explored the suburban house as a cultural icon in his series SUBURBAN, which involved drastically altering homes that were set for demolition and then burning the down, filming the entire process.

Windowless House of Glass: Solid Walls Hide Invisible Floors

In a surreal reversal of modern architectural convention, this Vertical Glass House trades a tradition of solid horizontals and clear verticals for an opaque shell and see-through walking surfaces.

The design by Atelier FCJZ draws on Modernism’s celebration of materials like concrete, glass and steel, but subverts them at the same time via a 90-degree twist. The result is a surprising inverse of celebrated Modernist residences, textbook-making works like Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House or Phillip Johnson’s Glass House.

Despite its strategic departures, the unique home is still intended in a Modernist spirit – its simplicity is just turned inward, meant to engender and focus internal reflection. Set as it is in Shanghai, and designed by a Chinese firm, one could also argue it is an Eastern interpretation of a primarily Western movement.

The building was originally designed for a competition just over two decades ago, but recently realized as an actual structure thanks to the West Bund Biennale of Architecture and Contemporary Art, which has made it a permanent pavilion and opened it to guest artists and architects in residence.

From the designers: “Vertical Glass House is a urban housing prototype and discusses the notion of transparency in verticality while serving as a critic of Modernist transparency in horizontality or a glass house that always opens to landscape and provides no privacy.”

“With enclosed walls and transparent floors as well as roof, the house opens to the sky and the earth, positions the inhabitant right in the middle, and creates a place for meditation. Vertical transparency [also] visually connects all the utilities, ductworks, furniture pieces on different levels, as well as the staircase, into a [comprehensible] system of domesticity.”

20-Hour House: How to 3D-Print 2,500 Square Feet in 1 Day

Combining ancient earthen-architecture approaches and cutting-edge robotic technologies, this contour crafting process promises a revolution in how we address one of our most basic and universal human needs: shelter.

Inventor and teacher Dr. Behrokh Khoshevis of University of Southern California points out that residential construction is labor-intensive, inefficient and hazardous. In short: it is overdue for a paradigm shift, one that not only automates and speeds up processes but also allows for mass customization and individualization.

His Counter Crafting system “is a fabrication process by which large-scale parts can be fabricated quickly in a layer-by-layer fashion. The chief advantages of the Contour Crafting process over existing technologies are the superior surface finish that is realized and the greatly enhanced speed of fabrication” in part through the use of additives for faster hardening times.

Steel reinforcement, plumbing and electrical can all be installed by robotic attachments as the concrete walls are poured. In turn, conventional shape and style limitations need not apply – curves are as simple to program as right angles. Part of the beauty of this system is that it cuts out the middle man – designs can go straight from the digital drawing board (CAD software) to the on-board computer.

Nor is this simply one man’s fantasy: “Contour Crafting has been under development under support from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. Also, the application of CC in building adobe structures using inexpensive materials is being pursued in conjunction with the CalEarth organization.” Contour Crafting is also working with NASA to explore possibilities for 3D-printing structures in space.
