Homeless Hotel: Radical Urban Retreat has No Rooms, Ever

homeless hotel

You may have seen some strange and unique accommodations on AirBNB, but few hosts can boast something as unusual as Faktum Hotels, an unreal room-free resort in Sweden.

homeless shelter hostel rooms

Their offerings are entirely out in the open air, doubling as an awareness-raising campaign for the city’s homeless and and actual alternative sleeping space for those same citizens.

homeless urban living awareness

So if not rooms, then what are you actually booking? A sleeping bag, or simply a secluded space … everywhere an actual vagabond or vagrant might occupy, including park benches, public restrooms, abandoned buildings, bridge underpasses and below bleachers.

homeless street parking spaces

And how much to reserve one of these temporary hobo hostels? The rate for each of these 10 surreal pseudo-spaces is just 10 Euros per night … proceeds of which go to charity work supported by Faktum Magazine.

Subterranean Quarry Hotel to Extend 328 Feet Underground

19 Feb

[ By Steph in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 1

Construction has begun on an incredible 19-story, 5-star hotel that will be located deep within a 100-meter (328-foot) abandoned quarry near the base of Tianmashan Mountain in the Songjiang District of Shanghai. The 380-room Shimao Intercontinental Hotel seemed almost too wild to be true, and though its initial estimated opening date of May 2009 has long past, photos show progress at the quarry.

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 2
Designed by British engineering firm Atkins Global, the Shimao Hotel mimics a waterfall with a glass atrium that extends from the ground-level roof all the way down into the quarry. Three of the floors will be above-ground, with the rest extending into the pit. Instead of pumping the water out of the flooded quarry, the designers aim to turn it into a man-made lake.

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 3

Activities will take advantage of the unique landscape, including rock climbing, bungee jumping and water-based sports, and the hotel will also have its own cafes, restaurants, swimming pools, shopping and sporting facilities. Several of the public areas will be underwater, with others facing a 10-meter-deep aquarium.

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 4

Songjiang Intercontinental Hotel will be powered with geothermal energy, and above-ground structures will have green roofs for insulation and to help them blend in with the surrounding scenery. Rooms are expected to start at $ 320 per night, and the hotel is scheduled to open in late 2014 to early 2015.

Surreal La Balade des Gnomes Hotel 1

If your idea of a romantic getaway is to sleep in surreal, vaguely medieval rooms within a Trojan horse, perhaps you should be spending your Valentine’s Day at the bizarre La Balade des Gnomes Hotel in Belgium. ‘The Walk of the Gnomes’ offers ten themed rentals made of natural materials – the polar opposite of typical sterile, cookie cutter hotel rooms.

Architect Mr. Noel created the hotel on what was formerly an ordinary farm in the charming historic town of Durbuy, to complement his restaurant next door. The most stunning suite, from the outside, is the Trojan Horse, but the hotel also offers a troll’s lair and a Macquarie Island room with a boat-shaped bed.

Surreal La Balade des Gnomes 3

The natural building material cob, which is mud mixed with lime and straw, provides an ideal medium with which to sculpt irregular walls inlaid with mosaics and twisted branches. Some rooms look like castles straight out of Game of Thrones while others resemble alien landscapes.

No matter which room you choose, staying at this highly unusual hotel is bound to be an experience to remember. Rooms start at just €115 ($ 153).

Extreme Room Service: Space Hotel is Surprisingly Spacious

09 Jan

[ By Delana in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

space hotel

When you take a vacation, the point is usually to get away from everyday life and do something different. Well, there is nothing quite as different (and no place quite as removed from everyday life) as venturing into space. A Russian company called Orbital Technologies is developing a commercial space station, an orbiting hotel that is 217 miles removed from the surface of Earth.

1 space hotel sleeping pod

2 commercial space station hotel pod

The incredible hotel is not for the budget-conscious traveler; it will cost a bit over US$ 800,000 just to get there, with another US$ 160,000 or so required for five days of accommodations aboard the space station. However, the spacecraft will be designed as a comfortable environment that is much more focused on leisure than the science-oriented International Space Station.

4 orbiting space hotel

A trip to Orbital Technologies’ commercial space station will take two days to reach aboard a Soyuz rocket. Experienced space crews will accompany tourists (up to seven at a time) both on the journey from Earth and during their stay in space. Gourmet Earth food – not the bland food tubes astronauts have traditionally been served – will travel in the rocket along with the tourists as well, then be warmed up in on-board microwave ovens just before mealtime.

The commercial space station will be equipped with windows, cameras and binoculars so that guests can see the breathtaking neighborhood the space hotel is in. While the project, slated to open in 2016, is mostly geared toward über-wealthy tourists, it is not exclusively a leisure destination. The commercial space station will also serve as an emergency destination for astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station if they should ever run into trouble while on a mission.

Hanging Hotel: Hard-to-Reach Resort for Rock Climbers

01 Nov

[ By Steph in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

If you can reach this futuristic hotel pod imbedded in the side of a mountain, your reward is a quiet resting space that you can customize to create a relaxing, meditative environment tailored to your whims. Designed for rock climbers, the Hanging Hotel concept by Dr. Margot Krasojevic was designed for Holden Manz Wine Estate Cape Town in Massif de L’Esterel in the South of France.

This ‘suspended campsite’ is a system of pods and platforms attached to the granite through borehole foundations injected into the rock face. The platforms on the exterior offer additional climbing surfaces, and places to rest while getting closer to the entrance.

Made of steel horizontal piles, columns and frames as well as plywood paneling, a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer shell and a wooden walkway, the Hanging Hotel clings to the rock face in seemingly precarious fashion, looking a bit like an artificial parasite.

Once inside, climbers can access what Krasojevic deems “the most important ingredient to this mix of materials” – a holographic filtered compound glass and prism louver system that alters the look and feel of the interior by adjusting the light level inside, reducing glare and producing shimmering colored light effects on the interior walls.

This orchestrated surreality takes advantage of climbers’ exhaustion and the physical effects of altitude to help them disassociate from the reality of the present moment for enhanced rest and recovery. “It can also ‘tune climbers in’ to the reality of the environment by creating a hyperawareness about the nuances of light that our vision may not be accustomed to seeing,” explains the designer.

Rain Forest Retreat: Remote Jungle Tree-House Hotel

28 Oct

[ By Delana in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

We all get tired of modern urban living from time to time, but one American couple was so fed up with city life that they decided to create an entirely new community in the Costa Rican Jungle.

Finca Bellavista is a lush green community of permanent residents and people who are just passing through, nestled in the gorgeous jungle setting of Costa Rica. The community is composed of a system of tree houses in the canopy of the rain forest, all connected by suspended wooden sky bridges and zip lines.

The retreat was founded by Mateo and Erica Hogan to house like-minded individuals who need to get away from it all – far, far away. Folks who want to stay permanently can buy a plot and build their own treehouses; those who only want to experience the retreat on a vacation basis can temporarily rent a number of existing units.

Although the worldwide trend seems to be toward luxury vacations and full-service resorts in which one’s every whim is catered to, Finca Bellavista is a wholly unique destination. It is nestled in a dream-like environment but is by no means a luxury resort. It is comfortable, but the property’s focus is more on adventure and environmental stewardship than on pampering visitors and residents.
