Amphitheater of the Dead: Hong Kong Hillside Cemeteries

Hong Kong Hillside Cemeteries 1

This terraced structure is not the remains of some ancient amphitheater, but a metropolis of the dead that’s just as dense as that of the living city of Hong Kong. It’s this ancient, ruinous feel contrasting with the bustle of millions of people all around it that inspired urban photographer Manuel Alvarez Diestro to capture it as part of a series of gloomy, grimy photos.

Ten of these cemeteries are portrayed in the series, often integrated into hillsides, so packed that each grave is shoehorned beside the other. Like many other cities around the world, Hong Hong has a big problem finding enough room to deal with its dead. The hillside cemeteries were a solution in the ’60s, and by the ’80s, they were interring bodies in high-rise buildings beside residential areas brimming with life.

Seeking to capture the mood of the cemeteries themselves, Diestro only photographed them early in the morning during the rainy season (one of them is ironically named ‘Happy Valley.’) He told The Atlantic that the cemeteries reminded him of the Roman amphitheater of Leptis Magna.

Hong Kong Hillside Cemeteries 4

It’s no surprise that Hong Kong’s cemeteries are in such a state, considering how overcrowded the city is in general. It’s twice as dense as New York and four times as crowded as London. Take a look at some incredible photos of Hong Kong urban density by Michael Wolf.

Billboards offer tourists a glimpse of smog-free Hong Kong

With worsening air quality spoiling the view, authorities in Hong Kong have come up with a novel solution for snap-happy tourists – giant panoramic billboards showing what the city would look like if there weren’t so much pollution, for them to take pictures of. The initiative follows what has been dubbed China’s ‘Airpocalypse’, earlier this year where pollution hit levels 25 times those considered safe in the USA.

Michael Wolf offers a new perspective on Hong Kong’s high-rises

At first glance, Michael Wolf’s photos look like they could be a tapestry or abstract art. Look closer and you’ll see that they’re actually cleverly composed photos of Hong Kong’s ubiquitous high-rises. Wolf would head to one of the many hills in the city – or sometimes just go upstairs in an adjacent building – and set up his camera. The results are spectacular, as you’ll see after the link.

density in hong kong

Twice as dense as New York, and four times as crowded as London, Hong Kong is a fascinating mix of natural landscape edged by incredibly dense human construction.

dense urban city images

Michael Wolf, a German photographer, focuses on the latter, turning the vast structures of the city into strange stand-alone landscapes that show the enormity and relentless repetitiveness of this vertical urban environment.

dense city urban scaffolding

On the one hand, it is fascinating to see just how overwhelming the overarching rhythms of the buildings are when you take a broad view. At the same time, though, individuality begins to emerge as you zoom in and narrow the scope of your perspective.

dense dark city photos

In his book Architecture of Density Wolf explores the patterns and scales of his new home city, testing different angles and distances while remaining focused on the sometimes-bleak yet awe-inspiring man-made side of this incredibly packed island.

hong kong street level

As his main series of photographs show (versus the scout shots directly above), attempts to distinguish scales through details and color seem almost hopeless against the large-scale monotony of it all. To be fair to its inhabitants, however, those upper-level images tell only one half of the story – visiting Hong Kong has many more dimensions than can be seen looking only from on high.
