Self-Defense Decor: 3 Furshings Fend Off Home Invaders

19 Feb

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Clubs, axes and bats are anything but typical furniture, and may be off-putting to ordinary people visiting your house. Hence these hybrid designs, in which weapons are built right into nightstands, coat racks and coffee tables.

First, a classic: the James McAdam bat-and-shield bedside-table set that started out as a concept design, but through a cycle of positive viral feedback has not made it into production and is available for purchase.

From its creator: “Here it is the [safest bedside table] you can buy. Made from Birch [plywood] Maple and Leather this table is priced at $ 245. It has been developed [since being] exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art NY and now being made in the UK for sale worldwide.”

Next, a spiked club from The Principals.  “Crossing a classic piece of sports equipment with an everyday household piece of furniture, the Bat Rack uses iconographic items to create a unique piece that functions both passively and actively, to serve and protect.

“As a weapon of self defense and a place to hang your belongings, the Bat Rack can be installed on any wall by swinging, spike-end first, or used to stop any burglar in their tracks. Constructed from solid Carolinian maple and hand-turned stainless steel, the Bat Rack is inspired by the supple curves of Danish mid-century masters and the crack of a bat heard from neighborhood sandlots.”

Finally, from designer Chris Duffy, the less-practical but quite-beautiful axe table. “Walnut veneer or light Oak veneer from Stewardship Council managed forests and other controlled sources, the solid hickory axe handles are specially imported from the USA. Resin composite axe heads.”

Google Maps-Inspired Birdhouse Guides Birds Home

01 Feb

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

Google Maps Birdhouse 1

This little orange icon tells us just where we need to go on Google Maps – and now it shows birds where home is, too. Designer Shuchun Hsiao has created a series of birdhouses modeled after the Google Maps destination icon, and placed them all over urban locations in China.

Google Maps Birdhouse 2

The Google Birdhouse Project makes the iconic marker a navigational landmark for birds, and seeing them on walls will undoubtedly cause a few human double-takes.

Google Maps Birdhouse 3

Says the designer, “Google Map had created a remarkable landmark icon, showing the sites on its street views. To search for a landmark with online google map, we can scroll to zoom from the satellite, soon we’ll be able to wander on streets, virtually.”Google Maps Birdhouse 4

“Birds, have the most real experience of google map. Birds can fly through the city, through streets. A birdhouse becomes their destination as google map does.”

4-Foot-Wide Home in Poland is Now Thinnest in the World

27 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Nestled in the interstitial space between two existing structures and raised up one story from the street sits an improbable structure, proposed then built as an artist-in-residence live/work dwelling of incredible audacity and engineered ingenuity.

We have seen skinny houses and other buildings in places like Japan before, but no single-unit residence that matches this narrow wonder where even the bed is barely wide enough to sleep one.

Transparency, translucency and a tall angled roofs are essential to making the interior feel larger than it is. A bedroom, lounge, bathroom and office are all included at various levels, giving it a sense of separation despite all spaces running (by necessity) along the same plane.

Exposed cross-beams give each wall a sense of depth, and direct the eye up, down and out, enhancing the illusion of openness. And the inspiration for this art-centric abode designed by Bartek Warzecha for the Polish Modern Art Foundation? An extreme short story writer named Etgar Keret.

Secret Spirals: Underground Home Wine Cellar Spaces

25 Jan

[ By Steph in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

Hidden Spiral Wine Cellars 1

High-tech looking spiral wine cellars that either blend into the floor or glow with colored lights will entice even non-oenophiles to take up collecting Cabernet. A company called Spiral Cellars offers prefabricated cellars in traditional and modern designs that can be inserted into the floor of nearly any home, even if you don’t have an existing basement or cellar.

Hidden Spiral Wine Cellars 2

The water-tight, cylindrical system can store up to 1,900 bottles of wine. Because it relies on the surrounding earth for its insulation, and comes equipped with an air-flow system, it doesn’t require any power to keep the wine at a constant temperature. The system was inspired by a spiral staircase from 1844 found at the Pont du Gard aqueduct in France.

Wood-paneled doors practically disappear in a wood floor, especially the recessed trap doors that can be covered in timber, engineered wood or laminate flooring to match the rest of the room. Others are made to be seen, with LED lights that make them glow like some kind of space ship portal.

Hidden Spiral Wine Cellar 5

Some of the doors are motorized, so they pop up at the press of a button. A retractable round glass trap door features two semi-circular glass panels that swivel over each other to open. Craving wine yet?

Stylish New AK47 Home Storage Solutions Really Pop

09 Jan

[ By Steph in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

AK47 Home Collection 1

Unconventional solutions for home storage by Italian company AK47 make a bold, graphic statement on the wall or ceiling, turning everyday items like clothing, firewood, magazines and even food into decor. The 2012 home collection includes round wall-mounted shelves in black and white, a low coffee table with built-in storage and wall-mounted clothes hangers that can be arranged in artistic configurations.

AK47 Home Collection 4

Flouting the tired convention of storing books and other items in vertical stacks, the Tubola storage system creates little wall cubbies that keep items up off the ground, and put them on display in individual groups. Available in a range of sizes, the shelves can be mounted like wall art.

AK47 Home Collection 5

The Zerino coffee table features a center cutout that can hold the object of your choice, whether a plant, candles or a miniature fire pit. The space between the two discs offers room for storage.

The Bretell magazine rack puts your collection front-and-center, while the Tac wall-mounted clothes hanger brings your clothes and accessories out of the closet.

AK47 Home Collection 8

Have a lot to hang? The Gang ceiling-mounted chain hanger can fit a lot of clothing into one small space, and would also look great covered in plants.

04 Jan

Themed-Home-Theaters

Theme parks are fun because of the rides, yes, but a lot of the joy comes from the atmosphere. Theme parks are designed like movie sets, and it feels like one has stepped into a different world. Wouldn’t it be great if that feeling could be brought home? It can be. Creating a themed home theater is increasingly popular with those that have the money, or the obsession, to make it worthwhile.

Pirate Themed Home Theater

Florida-based AVS Forum contributor Venomnusss shared his incredibly detailed Egyptian tomb-themed home theater. According to his description, the theater took 1.5 years to complete, which isn’t surprising considering the incredible detail. Symmetric sides encase a large U-shaped couch that can seat the entire family, whether it’s time for the next episode of a TV show, or a thrilling film.

Star Trek Movie Theater

Electronics masters ESC designed and implemented this intense Star Trek themed theater for a private homeowner. With an incredible amount of detail (apparent to any fans of the show) and a difficult set up, ESC pulled out all the stops, including motorized doors and concert-type lighting.

Batman Themed Home Theater

Elite Home Theater Seating pulled out the stops again, with this private Batman themed batcave theater. Besides the ceiling that looks like a true cave, the coolest touch has to be the sliding bookshelves that reveal the newest version of the batmobile. Command screens in the back of the home theater are the perfect tools for Alfred to monitor Batman and act as support.

Star Wars Theater

Modern Home Theater shares the details of this Star Wars themed home theater designed to look like the command deck of the Death Star from the films. The theater is owned by a couple living outside of Seattle, who included three rows of seating to ensure that everyone can join in their movie marathons.
