Hands-on with the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR

25 Oct

70-200F4.jpg

We’ve been one of the first publications to get a chance to handle Nikon’s AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. The example we used is officially pre-production, so we weren’t able to shoot samples with it, but it had the build and handling of a finished model, so we were able to form some initial impressions of this long hoped-for F4 tele-zoom lens.

Just Posted: Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 35-100mm F2.8 hands-on preview

16 Oct

35-100-520.png

Just Posted: our preview of the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 35-100mm F2.8 OIS. The 35-100mm F2.8 is Panasonic’s second constant aperture zoom for Micro Four Thirds and is designed to cover the classic 70-200mm equivalent range. It does so in a relatively compact lens that matches the company’s existing 12-35mm F2.8 bright standard zoom. The lens we have isn’t ready for the rigors of studio testing, so isn’t part of the relaunch of lens reviews just yet, but is ‘final’ enough for us to be allowed to publish a full-resolution samples gallery.

14 August, 2012 – Tokina 300mm Mirror Lens for MFT – A Hands-On Review

25 Aug

Mirror lenses have been around since the 1950’s. Some are better than others, but they never are really up to the quality of a good prime of comparable focal length, or even a decent zoom.

But their small size and comparative low cost keep them popular among some photographers, and their unique "drawing" ability appeals to some.

Lens maker Tokina had just released a 300mm F6.3 Macro Mirror lens for Micro Four Thirds, and I have just field tested this new lens on my Olympus OM-D E-M5. My review is now online.

Nikon 14-24mm AF-S f/2.8 G ED Hands-on Review

01 Aug

This week we take a look at another wide-angle zoom, but this time from Nikon. This is a monster lens, with a monster aperture for a wide-angle: f/2.8. How does this Nikkor perform? Is it worth the cash? Pricing reference: www.digitalrev.com
Video Rating: 4 / 5

The Nikkor 28mm f/1.4 was a legendary lens with stunning performance but was disappointingly discontinued. This new 24mm f/1.4 is somewhat taking its place as a fast wide-angle, but the question is – is it as good? We take the Nikon lens out to the Chinese University of Hong Kong to take some shots and find out what it’s like. Pricing Reference: www.digitalrev.com

Canon EOS M: hands-on preview of Canon’s first mirrorless EOS

24 Jul

canon_eosm.png

Canon has, as expected, announced the EOS M – its first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Based around the same 18MP APS-C sensor as the recent EOS 650D/T4i, the EOS M is the first model to use a new, smaller ‘EF-M’ lens mount. It is launched alongside two EF-M lenses that use STM stepper motors optimized for use with the camera’s hybrid AF system. As we’ve seen before in the mirrorless sector, the EOS M is predominantly aimed at the point-and-shoot upgrader market looking for DSLR quality and makes greater use of a 650D-style touch-screen interface. We’ve been using the EOS M for a little while and have prepared a preview, looking in more detail at Canon’s first mirrorless EOS camera and how it handles.

The specifications may initially look a little familiar but almost every component has been updated or improved. It gains most of its ergonomics from the EOS 7D but inherits the sophisticated 61-point AF system from the EOS-1D X. It also comes with a range of movie-focused features and promises of a 2-stop improvement in low-light performance. The camera will be available from the end of March 2012.
