Half Invisible: Deserted Desert Cabin Remixed with Mirrors

05 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

see through cabin

Unlike a mirage on the horizon, this quaint little abode is entirely real, even if it seems to half-disappear through alternating wood and (seemingly) see-through slats.

A project by Phillip K Smith III (images by Stephen King Photography and Lance Gerber), Lucid Stead modifies an existing abandoned home shape that is straightforward and familiar.

see through night light

Through its materials, however, the artist makes the building interact with the landscape in mind-bending ways, reflecting its surroundings via long horizontal siding and framed rectangular (faux) windows that slowly light up at night. The effect is a strange partial vanishing of the structure.

see through house art

Of the work, the artist writes: “Lucid Stead is about tapping into the quiet and the pace of change of the desert. When you slow down and align yourself with the desert, the project begins to unfold before you. It reveals that it is about light and shadow, reflected light, projected light, and change.”

see through day stars

From the portfolio page: “Composed of mirror, LED lighting, custom built electronic equipment and Arduino programming amalgamated with a preexisting structure, this architectural intervention, at first, seems alien in context to the bleak landscape.  In daylight the 70 year old homesteader shack, that serves as the armature of the piece, reflects and refracts the surrounding terrain like a mirage or an hallucination. As the sun tucks behind the mountains, slowly shifting, geometric color fields emerge until they hover in the desolate darkness.”

Blickfang: Half Life

26 Nov

Als ich die von Bilder Michael Ackerman letztes Jahr erstmals in Berlin vor mir sah, ohne Rahmen und versetzt an der weißen Galeriewand befestigt, hatte es mich gepackt, geschüttelt und getroffen.

Ich musste mir den Fotoband „Half Life“* unbedingt zulegen, ganz egal, was mein Konto dazu sagte.

Milky Way Over Half Dome, Yosemite National Park

Milky Way Over Half Dome, Yosemite National Park

The Milky Way rises over Half Dome as seen from Glacier Point – Yosemite National Park

One of the many things I love about Yosemite National Park is that it’s equally photogenic at night as it is during the day. During my last visit I focused on astro-landscapes, but Mother Nature had other things in mind with a lot of clouds. Fortunately for me the heaviest clouds cleared just in time for me to take this photo and several others.

My location of choice was Glacier Point as the increased altitude above the valley floor allows you to see the Milky Way rising a little earlier without obstruction. In addition you have an amazing view of Half Dome and Nevada and Vernal Falls. These of course make for amazing foreground subjects.

One interesting note about this photo is that it was taken with out a tripod. I had two other cameras running time-lapses on a tripod when this was taken and I was left with only my ingenuity to stabilize my 3rd camera. To stabilize my camera for this long exposure I lodged the camera on a rock and used the strap with a great deal of tension to lock it into place. If there is interest I’ll go over exactly how I did this.

Generosity in a Can: Coke Can Splits in Half for Sharing

15 Jun

[ By Delana in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

coca cola sharing can

You might have fond memories of sharing a Coca-Cola with a special person, but those memories probably involve a glass and two straws. This clever marketing campaign lets you split your Coke can right in the middle to share it easily.

The “Sharing Can” is a clever design that allows you to split apart a normal-size Coca-Cola can with a simple twist. The top and bottom halves separate, giving you two half-size Cokes – one for you and one to share.

The design is simple but clever along with being visually striking. These cute little cans would be the perfect conversation starter for getting to know someone.

Splitting your Coke with someone else would also be better for your health than drinking a whole can on your own. Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing them in stores or machines anytime soon. The “Sharing Can” was a limited-time campaign in Singapore.

Half Dome Sunrise, Yosemite

Half Dome Sunrise, Yosemite National Park

Half Dome Sunrise, Yosemite National Park

To gaze upon a sunrise is a treasured moment, you only get so many opportunities to see them. Keeping that in mind it always pays to get up early.

John Muir also had an eloquent quote, “God never made an ugly landscape. All that the sun shines on is beautiful, so long as it is wild.”  I couldn’t agree more, but it’s easy to see how he came to that conclusion witnessing so many sunrises in Yosemite. Personally there are few things as glorious as seeing sunrise over Half Dome.

Half Pipe, Double Trouble: 2 Skateboard-able Dream Homes

18 Oct

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Skateboarders often have a tendency to eye virtually every surface as they go about their day, sizing it up for its curves and rails, imagining what it would be like to skate it. What if more structures were skateable, or even designed with skateboarders in mind? These two houses, Skate Villa by Philipp Schuster and PAS House by Francois Perrin and Gil Lebon Delapointe, are ultimate fantasy homes with curved walls, seats and even fireplaces.

PAS House

Designed as a ribbon providing a continuous surface to skate on from one end of the home to the other, PAS House was a collaboration between skateboarder and designer Gil Lebon Delapointe and architect Francois Perrin. The house is planned for a cliffside site in Malibu overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and a full-scale prototype was shown at Project Darwin in Bordeaux, France.

Created for Pierre Andre Senizergues, a former world champion and pro skater, PAS House includes a living room, dining area and kitchen as well as a bedroom, bathroom and skateboard practice area. The central part of the house forms a loop, with an interior measuring 10 feet in diameter.

Skate Villa

A derelict hunting cabin in Salzburg, Austria is now a bright, beautiful and almost totally skateable house with all the comforts and eccentricities of the original structure. At Skate Villa, concrete mounds added to the base of the walls add curves where there were none, and ramps were even created on interior structures like the fireplace.

Pro skater Philipp Schuster designed, gutted and renovated the house as his own personal indoor skate park after purchasing it from an elderly couple. The original character of the cabin was maintained with dark wood elements, hunting trophies and traditional lodge-style furniture.
