DJI Osmo Mobile brings 3-axis gimbal stabilization to smartphones

03 Sep

DJI has introduced the Osmo Mobile, a variation of its previously launched Osmo that is, in this case, designed for smartphones. With Osmo Mobile, users can insert a smartphone into the mount and record smooth, stabilized footage with the handset thanks to the SmoothTrack technology and 3-axis gimbal stabilization. The stabilizer works with the DJI GO App for livestreaming videos, sharing content, and tracking moving objects via DJI’s ActiveTrack.

The Osmo Mobile’s 3-axis stabilization claims accuracy down to 0.03 degrees, while the SmoothTrack tech works to reduce small movements and shaking. Trigger control enables switching between the handset’s front and rear camera, as well as re-centering and locking the gimbal direction. Standard, Portrait, Flashlight, and Underslung operation modes are available.

The DJI GO App offers, in addition to ActiveTrack, functions including access to camera settings, Panorama, Long Exposure, Live Stream, and Motion Time Lapse. Other Osmo features include Bluetooth, a 3.5mm charging/upgrade port, and compatibility with Osmo accessories. DJI says Osmo Mobile ‘should’ support any smartphone between 2.31 and 3.34 inches wide; this includes the most recent high-end smartphones, including the Galaxy S7, iPhone 5/6/6s Plus, and the Huawei Mate 8.

The Osmo Mobile is available as of today for $ 299.

DJI launches iPhone-controlled Osmo+ gimbal camera with zoom

26 Aug

DJI has launched the Osmo+, an upgrade to its iPhone-controlled Osmo gimbal camera, offering a range of improvements including zoom. The Osmo+ comes with 3.5x optical zoom that can be combined with a 2x digital zoom for an overall 7x range. When recording video in 1080p resolution the digital zoom is ‘lossless’, but that’s not the case in 4K mode.

The equivalent focal range covers approximately 22-77mm and apertures vary from F2.8 at wide angle to F5.2 at the maximum tele setting. Like its predecessor the Osmo+ captures 12MP JPEG and Raw images or records up to 4K video on a 1/2.3″ Sony Exmor sensor. A 1080p 120fps slow-motion mode is available as well.

Also new on the Osmo+ is a timelapse feature that lets you set start and end points for the moving camera head. DJI says the 3-axis image stabilization system has been improved as well, especially for still image mode. The Osmo+ is available at the DJI Store for $ 649. A tripod, bike mount and an extension rod are some of the wide range of accessory options.

REVL seeks funding for Arc 4K action camera with integrated gimbal

18 Mar

REVL, a San Francisco-based startup, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to produce REVL Arc, a 4K action camera with an integrated motorized gimbal. Arc, currently in prototype form, uses four sensors that track altitude and motion, as well as electronic image stabilization to provide smooth footage that automatically keeps level to the horizon, even when the camera operator isn’t. The sensor data is used with a mobile app to auto-edit footage for expedited sharing.

REVL Arc provides three video recording options: 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at 120/60/30 fps and 720p at 240/120/60 fps. The camera can take still images, as well, at a 12MP resolution with four burst mode options: 30 fps for 1 second, 10 fps for 3 seconds, 5 fps for 6 seconds, and 3 fps for 10 seconds. Live video previews are available in the REVL App and via Apple Watch.

Content is saved to an SD card (up to 128GB), while connectivity is available over Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11n Wi-Fi. The integrated 1100mAh Li-ion battery offers up to 90 minutes of recording in 4K resolution with Wi-Fi disabled. Arc supports third-party devices, as well, including Bluetooth microphones, heart rate monitors and GPS units.

Backers can reserve a final production unit through Indiegogo for a pledge of $ 349. The company’s website says it plans to start shipping the camera this upcoming December, though the crowdfunding campaign lists an estimated worldwide delivery date of March 2017.

Review: Zenelli Carbon Fiber Gimbal Tripod Head

27 Jan

One of the more impressive pieces of gear that I’ve been using as of late is the Zenelli CARBONZX Carbon Fiber Gimbal Head. I can’t say I’d have ever thought of myself being excited over a tripod head, but Zenelli has made one of the sexiest pieces of equipment I’ve seen and used. As you’d imagine any product that is Carbon Fiber is going to come with a hefty price tag and this gimbal head is no exception, but for those in need of cutting the weight of their gear for remote trips this could be worth the spend. It’s important to note that the fact this gimbal head is carbon fiber is not the only reason to consider it. The engineers at Zenelli have come up with very innovative features to protect high value super telephoto lenses with the Save Lens Lever®, Pin Save Tablet® and SaveLook® lever.  The Save Lens Lever ensures the lens remains balanced and does not fall when changing gear or leaving your gear unattended. The Pin Save Tablet is a mechanism that ensures the arm of the gimbal head cannot uncouple accidentally.  The Save Look lever ensures that the gimbals quick release can’t be accidentally released allowing your camera and/or lens to fall plus it allows for preset tightening of your Arca-type lens plates. I was also impressed the manufacturer thought to support panoramic photography by engineering the head so the lens plate mount is perfectly centered atop the rotational axis of the tripod head base. I demonstrate all of these features in my review video and with out a doubt the Zenelli CARBONZX Carbon Fiber Gimbal Head  gets my highest rating.
