Back in 2012, Jesse Chen – now an engineer at Facebook, but then a fresh graduate – wrote a blog post. In that post he explains how to get rid of the ‘ugly copyright overlay’ typically used in image proofs, posted online or sent out by professional photographers after events. Essentially a short guide to image theft, the post went unnoticed at the time, but two years later it has come back to haunt Chen, creating a storm of righteous anger from photographers on social media. Cutting Edges: Layered Back-Lit Paper Art Gets Deep & Dark

09 Apr

paper art cave people

Together, Hari & Deepti (Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker) turn sets of two-dimensional cutouts into vivid and haunting three-dimensional dioramas, often set in shadowy fantasy spaces.

Despite the darkness of their subject matter, in ordinary lighting conditions there is almost nothing to be seen of these pieces. The work waits in the shadows, so to speak, popping out when you turn out the lights and turn on the LEDs inside each individual light box.

Loosely analogous to a book, perhaps, the story plays out in the space between the pages, each one individually flat but, together with illumination, adding up to something more than the sum of its parts.

While most of their works are relatively small, a recent project challenged them to build at a much bigger scale, creating an entirely monstrous (pun intended) New York cityscape (shown below).

From the artists: “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”

Amazon Biosphere: Retailer Gets Glass Dome Headquarters

Amazon Biosphere Headquarters Seattle 1

How much more creative could you be if you were working in a stunning faceted glass dome every day? Some lucky Amazon workers will get to find out, as the City of Seattle’s design panel has approved plans for new structures at the company’s headquarters. Designed by international firm NBBJ, the project will consist of three connected biospheres with a steel framework.

Amazon Biosphere Headquarters Seattle 2

Each of the 25 to 35-meter-high biospheres will offer five floors of flexible work spaces along with about 65,000 square feet of open green space with both new and mature trees. The futuristic-looking design is meant to feel like a public park, and will be part of a larger green space known as ‘Block 19.’

The geometric pattern of the steel is is called a ‘Catalan Skin,’ based on a pattern of numbers in mathematics. The resulting shapes look a bit like sand dollars.

Not everyone is a fan of the planned additions. Curbed Seattle said “Our initial thought was that they resembled spores, slowly growing and spreading across the city until they encase all our trees.”

Place Vendome in Venice Gets Giant Bird Nest Tree Huts

24 Oct

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Place Vendome Bird Nest Installations 1

Upon the centuries-old architecture of Place Vendome in Paris, nest-like structures of head-scratching proportions have appeared; messy wooden lean-to huts clinging to verdigris pillars and posh old buildings. It seems as if giant birds have descended upon the city and made it their home.

The parasitic structures are the ‘tree huts’ of Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata, a continuation of a series that has taken him around the globe.

Five small cabins have been installed in key places in the Place Vendome, including the Vendome column, built in 1702 as a monument to the armies of Louis XIV.

The confusion of wooden slats draws the curiosity of onlookers, wondering who – or what – could be inside. The structures will be up for a month as part of FIAC 2013, an art festival in Paris. Among the other places in which Tadashi’s parasitic architecture has been installed are New York’s Madison Square Garden, Florence and Switzerland.

Now that he has his own copies of the new Zeiss Touit lenses, Roger Cicala of Lensrentals decided to crack into the Planar 32mm F1.8 lens and see if the renowned build quality of Zeiss optics was compromised to make the lenses more affordable.
