Urban Green: 8 Ingenious Small-Space Window Garden Ideas

window planters

City condos often lack room for a full garden, or even a small backyard. There are box and kit solutions, sure, but these creative alternatives preserve your views and limited sill space while providing green growth and unique outdoor connections.

Magnetic Two-Piece Window Pot

window magnetic double pot

Starting with the simplest: consider pair of two half-pots designed by Kyung-Eun Oh and joined by an invisible magnetic connection – one for the inside of windows and one for the outside, one colored white (typical plastic for indoors) and one a reddish brown (typical ceramic for outdoors).

Modular Rope-and-Pulley Herb Garden

window modular herb garden

Shooting for something that adds more than decor? Rows upon rows of herbs can be planted in this more intensive option by Barreau & Charbonnet, able to be raised or lowered to optimize around rain and sun.

Rotating Two-Faced Planter Sill

window reversible garden sill

While the previous example might pose challenges during extreme weather (storms and so forth), this system by Junkyung Kim & Yonggu Do allows you to keep a solid window in place but choose which side you want your plants to be on.

Sunken Memorial Garden Sliced into Submerged Cruise Ship

27 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

Submerged sea vessels have long been destinations for diving tourists or (intentional or accidental) marine life habitats, but what if they could serve some function still visible on the surface of the water, like a memorial to those lost when the ship sunk?

The New Concordia Island Contest winners, Alexander Laing and Francesco Matteo Belfiore, propose slicing the section of the Italian cruise ship that crashed in January of 2012 and planting a garden in the resulting voids, leaving the lower, still-submerged areas as habitat zones.

The contest itself “aims to rethink the disaster of the ship Costa Concordia as exceptional opportunity to imagine the future of the wreck and that of the Island of Giglio. It is also a chance to wonder about needs for architecture to build new landscapes on traces and remains of a traumatic event …. The jury has selected the projects that have responded in a more comprehensive way to the questions raised by the contest, interweaving visionaries contents to pragmatic and real solutions.”

The clean and simple solution of the winning proposal defers to both nature and humans, a tribute to the disaster as well as the lives lost. Other intervention propositions of runner-up submissions trended toward either extreme: leaving the wreck mainly as-is and building around it, or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, creating underwater passageways and making the remaining structure physically accessible to people.

Travis Young Photography Presents : Garden City, Kansas

03 Aug

This is my representation of Garden City. It is personal, and holds photos that hit home to me and my life. Is it a reflection of all Garden? Of course not. Gettin’ some slack from someone about this so I thought I’d throw this little bit out there before any one else over reacts to the photos that I took during my short visit of Garden. —— This is my hometown of Garden City, KS. I went back home for the weekend and during my stay I went to the trailer park I grew up in and the areas that surrounded it, then ventured around and photographed things I felt relevant to my Garden City “experience.” I’m not out to make Garden City look “ghetto” or “hood,” because it really isnt, It can get dirty at times though and I just want to show the world things that people tend to overlook or ignore or maybe not even see. People have it hard and it’s amazing what conditions people live in. It really sucked when I found a home, the size of a small shack, using an actual padlock as their door lock. Anyway, this is my hometown. This is the place that I love. Garden City, Kansas. Proud. Gradina manastirii Predeal (Sf. Nicolae) / The garden of Predeal (St. Nicholas) Nunnery

A few nice visual art images I found:

Gradina manastirii Predeal (Sf. Nicolae) / The garden of Predeal (St. Nicholas) Nunnery

Manastire din sec. XVIII, putin cunoscuta si frecventata. Daca doriti o bisericuta in care sa aveti sanse sa fiti absolut singuri, micuta biserica a acestei manastiri e locul cautat.

A small, secluded eighteenth century orthodox monastery (now a nunnery), it is the place to go if you are looking for an old church where you can be alone with the icons and the cross – a place for a little solitude and meditation.
The mural painting in the charming little church is not so well preserved, but its patina can make you feel like you are in a time long, long ago.
The nice nun at the door graciously allowed me to take pictures inside the church.

Kris Verdonck – EXHIBITION #1 – Warehouse of machinery, used in performances / installations (1995 – present)
visual art
Image by Z33 art centre, Hasselt
These appliances and objects are normally situated behind the scenes of a performance or show. The machines often look like medieval instruments (of torture). At the same time, they are often high-technological objects, that fulfil complex functions. They form a large contrast with the extreme esthetical images that they produce.

The overview of machines by Kris Verdonck addresses the field of tension between man and machine in today’s society. What relationship can/must/do people want to enter into with technology? How difficult is the balancing act between human control and submission to machines?
