Guerrilla Upcycling: Public Furniture Made of Parisian Trash

As darkness descends these guerrilla activists hit the streets, not to protest or graffiti but to build and install community infrastructure from the discarded roadside scraps of Paris, France.

Chapitre Zero is a project led by Duccio Maria Gambi and Mattia Paco Rizzi, furniture designers with a higher purpose in mind for the urban refuse they find, but with no license from the city to install their de facto illegal creations.

The evolving  team of nocturnal participants uses leftover palettes, old doors and other pieces of wood to shape seats and tables which they deploy into carefully-chosen spaces, leaving local residents to wake up surrounded by useful surprises

Their process has evolved over time, from prefabricating their pieces to working onsite with portable power tools to build with whatever waste is at hand, bending, fastening, screwing and nailing as they go.

This trash-taking approach naturally requires a degree of planning and preparedness but also a sense of the impromptu – much like other forms of ad hoc guerrilla street art.

If there is a twist to this particular tale, though, perhaps it is as follows: you can get away with a great deal in public if you seem to be doing something to improve the context you are working within. For their part, the community has responded warmly, throwing impromptu picnics, meetings and birthday parties in these unexpected new spaces.

3D Cat Furniture Set: Modular Hangouts for Walls & Ceilings

Furnishings for felines are nothing new, but this one-stop shop provides modular bridges, beds, posts and platforms designed as a kit-of-parts solution to turn any room into a cat’s personalized paradise.

Goldtatze boasts ground-up scratching posts but also wall-hanging walkways and ceiling-mounted spaces to allow cats full access both horizontally and vertically, while conveniently leaving room below and between for human companions (especially useful in small-space urban dwellings).

Designer and craftsman Stefan Hofmann set about to solve a problem for his own domestic best friend (an indoor-only cat) and went on to create solutions that could be deployed beyond his own home.

By breaking the system down into a series of individual pieces, the effect is much like that of visiting an IKEA store – the parts are made to be structurally and functionally autonomous, but also to mix and match in custom configurations.

From scratching posts to snuggle bowls, the resulting furnishings and fixtures play on feline favorites like boxes and baskets, providing all kinds of places to explore or simply curl up and observe surroundings (from a safe, secure and self-selected distance, of course).

Real 3D Sketches: 3 Furniture Sets that Draw on 2D Doodles

Like photo-realistic art in reverse, these three-dimensional objects are carefully crafted to look like rough-edged, hand-sketched representations. If the approach looks familiar, you might be recalling our previous coverage of work by Daigo Fukawa from the Tokyo University for the Arts.

In this series, Jinil Park indeed also with sketches of this chairs, table and lamp set. The artist then hammered wires to create variegated metal lines in the air that look convincingly like those one would expect to find where pen meets paper. These pieces were then welded together to form the finished products.

If the first set seems to have too fine a point on things, you might prefer the subtler work of Maya Selway instead. This designer has crafted a series of vessels made to look like minimalist outlines. Each piece is perfectly balanced to create the illusion of incompleteness while still being able to stand on its own.

Speaking of the intersection of 2D and 3D, any article would be remiss not to mention the remarkable work of FRONT, a group that takes virtual 2D-captured sketches (drawn by hand in the air) and turns them into 3D-printed models.

A camera-linked computer program extrapolates the form from the gestures of the designers, then extrudes a corresponding shape with surprising (and increasing) accuracy coupled with a strong touch of whimsy (like a 3D Doodler writ large).

Designed by Elii in Madrid, Spain, the compartment-centric project takes maximum advantage of high ceilings to add layers of usefulness above, below and ultimately between each of two levels.

Discrete handles along the walls allow the occupant to deploy each function in piecemeal fashion, calling down an on-demand hammock and fans, for instance, or dining room surface and seating as needed.

Hidden pulleys make it easy to drive each object back up and out of the way when not in use – no laborious reaching, pushing or pulling required.

That’s Sketchy: Rough Sketches Turned Into Real Furniture

Art student Daigo Fukawa of Tokyo University for the Arts created a collection of chairs and benches that seem like they just magically popped up off the paper.

Made for his senior thesis, the series of optical illusion furniture appears to be made from welded metal, and while it’s probably not the most comfortable seating anyone has ever experienced, it’s definitely cool to look at, undoubtedly eliciting plenty of double-takes in person.

Nomadic Furniture: Backpack of Parts Creates Portable Seat

A wooden seat that needs to wood, glue or screws, but focusing on traditional construction techniques, this design is about the craft-oriented journeyman and not a comfort-driven destination.

Jorge Penadés of Spain emphasizes the act of construction and deconstruction with his Nomadic Chair, which slots together and back apart in two minutes. It utilizes bright metal connectors and tucks away into a simple leather sling for travel.

In both seating and backpack form it is built to stand out from the crowd. Critics will no doubt point out that it is not the most comfortable item to carry or even to sit in, but its assembly involves joinery methods that stress the process over the product. Someone looking for a camping chair is probably still best off buying one made of lightweight aluminum and seat-friendly fabric.

Tensile Table: Floating Wood Furniture Levitates via Magnets

Science meets luxury in this levitating coffee table composed of hovering blocks that seem to magically shift back into formation when applied pressure is removed.

Like an over-sized Rubik’s Cube, the basic design is composed of a three-by-three grid of smaller wooden cubes, inexplicably (at least at a glance) separated in space. Also like its little cousin, the object is … puzzling.

The solution to the puzzle hides partly in the voids – thin wires keep each cube from flying away from the others, while powerful magnets hold the constituent pieces apart.  Effectively, The Float Table, is a matrix of “magnetized” wooden cubes that levitate with respect to one another. The repelling cubes are held in equilibrium by a system of tensile steel cables.”

The co-founders of Rocket Paper Robot, creators of The Float Table, have backgrounds in robotics, electrical engineering and artificial intelligence, on the one hand, and design, film and advertising on the other. The company itself “is an engineering boutique specializing in the innovation and fabrication of high-end kinetic furniture, lighting, and installations.”

Of their work, RPR writes: ”It’s classical physics applied to modern design. Each handcrafted table is precisely tuned to seem rigid and stable, yet a touch reveals the secret to Float’s dynamic character.”

And about their firm: “We relish in defying expectations through artful execution with a staunch allegiance to utility,(apparent) simplicity and technical excellence. We also work with clients to customize aesthetic yet functional products that enhance the versatility of residential/commercial spaces and celebrate the expression of unabashed style.”
