Top 10 sample galleries of the year #5: the Fujifilm X-T20

We’re counting down our top 10 most popular sample galleries of 2017, and we’ve at last cracked the top 5 (see the other winners below). Sitting pretty in the #5 spot is a little number we like to call the Fujifilm X-T20.

The little brother of the mighty Fujifilm X-T2, the X-T20 uses the same sensor and image processor, but packed in a smaller, lighter body. We think it’s a beautifully designed mirrorless camera that is also pleasure to use – it even earned a silver award in our review.

We’ve got four sample galleries left to go, and the final four represent some of our absolute favorite products launched this year. Stay tuned!

Polaroid wants Fujifilm to pay millions in royalties for Instax Square format

According to a report by World Intellectual Property Review, Fujifilm has filed a complaint for declaratory judgment, asking a US district court to clear the company of any wrongdoing after it was allegedly threatened with trademark litigation by Polaroid over the borders around its Instax Square images.

According to the suit, PRL IP, the brand licensor and marketer of the IP rights for Polaroid instant cameras, has turned against Fujifilm, “by suddenly demanding millions of dollars in annual royalty payments, on threat of a lawsuit.”

Fujifilm says Polaroid sent the company a letter in January 2017 stating that the “square form” of photographs taken by Fujifilm’s Instax camera is “essentially identical” to the trademark and trade dress rights owned by Polaroid. In March, another letter said that Polaroid would have “no choice but to take appropriate action to protect” its IP rights if Fujifilm would not take its Instax Square film off the market.

A third letter, sent in June, demanded royalty payments, and the complaint goes on to say that “on November 8, 2017, Fujifilm was notified that a negotiation meeting between the parties scheduled for the following day was cancelled because the lead investor expressly instructed defendants to pursue litigation unless Fujifilm complied with demands.”

PLR IP owns the US trademarks covering the borders surrounding instant photographs, but Fujifilm’s claim says that after filing for bankruptcy and discontinuing many product lines in 2008, Polaroid has been “unable to return to profitability through product sales” and now seeks “to generate revenue from what remains of the Polaroid IP portfolio”.

Fujifilm is asking the court to declare that its Instax film photos do not infringe any Polaroid IP rights, and is requesting cancellation of Polaroid’s trademarks.

Sliding in at our #9 spot is the Fujifilm GFX 50S medium-format camera. We first got our paws on this digital beast while at the CP+ 2017 tradeshow in Japan (check out the other cool products we saw there). We’re at the Photo Plus Expo show in New York, where Fujifilm is showing off its new XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR and GF 45mm F2.8 R WR prime lenses.

First up is the snappily-named XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR. It’s equivalent to a 122mm prime on X-series bodies, and as you can see, it’s a big lens. It also fills an appropriately big gap in Fujifilm’s historical lens lineup, being the first of Fuji’s X-mount lenses to give full 1:1 macro reproduction.

As usual for Fujifilm’s current lenses, the 80mm offers the option of manual aperture control via a dedicated dial, and a large focusing ring provides very fine control over focus, if required.

The XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR is optically stabilized, and is rated to provide around 5 stops of correction. This should help greatly in the macro focusing range, as well as making the lens more usable in general, in lower lighting conditions.

Toggle switches on the lens barrel allow the photographer to restrict the lens’s focusing range, as well as activate / deactivate the OIS stabilization system. The XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR is weather sealed (that’s what the ‘WR’ means) and like all of Fujifilm’s high-end lenses, it’s built to a very high standard of construction.

The Fujifilm XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR will be available next month for $ 1200.

The Fujinon GF 45mm F2.8 R WR is a very different beast. Designed for Fujifilm’s medium-format GFX 50S, it offers an equivalent field of view to 36mm on a full-frame camera.

At 490g (1.08 lb) the 45mm F2.8 is small and light by the standards of medium format lenses, and should be a useful prime lens for everyday shooting. A broad focusing ring and dedicated aperture control dial allow for manual control if desired.

Optical construction comprises 11 elements in eight groups, including one aspherical and two ED elements. Again, the ‘WR’ designation means that this lens is sealed against dust and moisture incursion – just like the GFX 50S.

The Fujinon GF 45mm F2.8 R WR will be available next month for $ 1700.

Fujifilm announces square-format Instax Share SP-3 SQ photo printer

Fujifilm has announced its first square-format standalone printer, the Instax Share SP-3 SQ. The SP-3 can crank out a 318 dpi photo in just 13 seconds and has a battery that will last for about 160 prints. The updated Share app includes templates for creating collages, magazine covers and CD jackets. Users can also search for hashtags on Instagram to select photos they wish to print. In addition to the Share app, photos can also be printed directly from Fujifilm’s X-series cameras.

You can pick up the Instax Share SP-3 SQ next month, in your choice of white or black, for $ 199.

Fujifilm X-E3 Review

The Fujifilm X-E3 is a 24MP mid-level APS-C mirrorless camera, designed as a smaller, more touchscreen-driven sister model to the SLR-like X-T20.

In terms of their internal hardware and specifications, the two cameras are very similar, but the X-E3 relies more heavily on its touch panel for moment-to-moment operation, as well as retaining a more rangefinder-like form factor.

It’s slightly smaller than the previous X-E models, with the removal of the four-way controller and built-in flash allowing the body to be made a little lighter and more compact. A clip-on flash is included in the box, but it’s a simple affair with no tilt or swivel capability to compensate for the decision to make it a separate component.

The more advanced use of the touchscreen, with directional swipes of the finger replacing the role of the four-way controller, pinch to zoom in playback and the option to use the screen as an AF touchpad when the camera’s to your eye doesn’t come at the expense of physical controls for all the main exposure settings.

The X-E3 also becomes the first Fujifilm model to gain Bluetooth, which establishes a full-time connection between the camera and a smartphone, allowing instant transfer of images as you shoot them. [or faster re-connection of Wi-Fi if you’re just choosing to send selected images]

The company also says it has improved its AF Tracking algorithm so that it can track smaller and faster subjects. Fujifilm say this improved algorithm will also come to the X-T2, X-T20, X100F and X-Pro2 in fimrware updates in November and December 2017.

Kit options:

Fujifilm will offer the X-E3 in two kits, one with the excellent 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 OIS, the other with the 35mm-equivalent 23mm F2 lens. We’re particularly interested to see this second kit, as it’s a combination we particularly like. It’s also a useful option for anyone who already has an earlier generation X series camera and already owns the 18-55mm.

The camera will be available, body only, for around $ 899, with the 18-55mm kit costing $ 1299 and the 23mm kit weighing in around $ 1149, both of which represent a considerable cost saving over the cost of buying the lenses separately.

Fujifilm releases firmware updates for X-T2, X-Pro2 and two lenses

Fujifilm has released firmware updates for its X-T2 and X-Pro2 camera bodies. The update to version 2.12 on the X-T2 and version 3.12 on the X-Pro2 fixes an issue that could occasionally cause the cameras to lock up when shooting in continuous high speed mode.

The X-T2 and X-Pro2 firmware updates are available to download at the links below:

Additionally, the company released updates for its XF 18-55 and XF 10-24 lenses. The new versions of the lens firmware fix an issue that could cause the focal length to be displayed incorrectly, and/or cause shaking in peripheral parts of images, even with focal length focus fixed.

Fujifilm X-A10 sample gallery

At $ 500 with a kit lens, the Fujifilm X-A10 represents the least expensive entry point to the company’s X-system. Like its fellow A-series siblings it uses a traditional bayer filter rather than X-Trans, and though it lacks a touch screen or option for optical viewfinder, it does provide an impressive 410-shot battery life.

While it may be overlooked by Fujifilm fans seeking a robust body or better tracking autofocus, it looks plenty tempting if you’re on a budget and swayed by Fujifilm’s lovely JPEGs. We brought it along on a recent trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming – take a look at how this light and compact ILC performed.

Fujifilm announces new X-series firmware and updated lens roadmap

The X-Pro2 is one of the four cameras that gains new functionality in an imminent firmware update.

Alongside the new X-E3 and XF 80mm F2.8 prime, Fujifilm also announced firmware updates for several of its current X-series models, and an updated lens roadmap. Two new lenses have been added to the roadmap: the XF8-16mmF2.8 R LM WR and a telephoto prime lens, the XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR. No further details on the lenses (or their likely cost or announcement date) have yet been released.

New firmware is closer to hand, and major updates are on the way for the X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F and X-T20 later this year, which will bring several additional capabilities.

Latest development of the X Mount Lens Roadmap unveiled; new Firmware Updates for FUJIFILM X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F and X-T20 coming soon

Valhalla, N.Y., September 7, 2017 – As a leader in advanced digital camera technology, FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the new FUJIFILM X-E3 rangefinder style mirrorless digital camera with outstanding image quality and enhanced handling. The X-E3 features the latest 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III image sensor and the X-Processor Pro high-speed image processing engine, along with a new image recognition algorithm in an ultra-compact body.

Also announced today is the new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens, the first 1.0x magnification mid-telephoto macro lens in the X Series lineup of interchangeable lenses. The lens features a focal length equivalent to 122mm (in the 35mm format) and a maximum aperture of F2.8 for beautiful bokeh.

Exceptional Autofocus Tracking and High-Speed Response

The FUJIFILM X-E3 features a large phase detection autofocus (AF) area and provides photographers with enhanced tracking performance for moving subjects. Equipped with a newly developed image recognition algorithm, the X-E3 is able to track moving subjects half the size, or moving twice as fast as previous models.

The X-E3 supports both Full HD and 4K video recording. Videos can be shot with Film Simulations in-camera to easily produce creative high-resolution footage.

The compact and lightweight X-E3 is perfect for quick snapshots, boasting high-speed response times including a start-up time of just 0.4 seconds, shooting interval of 0.25 seconds, shutter time lag of 0.05 seconds and autofocus speed as fast as 0.06 seconds.

Enhanced Connectivity and Intuitive Touchscreen Control

The X-E3 is the first X Series model to feature Bluetooth® low energy wireless communication. Providing photographers with enhanced connectivity, this feature offers the ability to pair the camera with a smartphone or tablet for easy transfer of pictures via the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote application.

The X-E3 features a high-resolution 3.0 inch 1.04M-dot static touchscreen LCD monitor to provide users with easy, intuitive operations in a variety of shooting and playback modes. When shooting with the X-E3, the touchscreen can be used to select the focus area, or focus on a specific point before taking a picture. For playback, users can enjoy the ability to swipe or scroll through images, double-tap to enlarge, drag an image once enlarged, along with pinch-out and pinch-in sizing. A new Touch Function feature will also be available on the X-E3, enabling users to create customized camera functions by swiping left, right, up and down on the touchscreen panel.

Ultra-Compact and Lightweight Body for Portability and Practicality

Making it the perfect companion for everyday shooting and travel photography, the new FUJIFILM X-E3 is the most compact and lightweight model with a viewfinder within the X Series interchangeable lens camera range. The X-E3 also features a Focus Lever positioned on the rear side of the camera that allows photographers to use joystick-type operations in eight directions to easily select a focus area.

The top plate features two precision-milled aluminum dials, giving the camera a premium feel and allowing users to easily adjust the shutter speed and exposure compensation while maintaining focus on taking a picture. The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the C position for exposure compensation up to ±5 stops. The new X-E3 is also equipped with an Auto mode selector lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode where the camera can automatically select the optimum settings for a given scene.

FUJINON XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens

The new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR is a lightweight, mid-telephoto macro lens designed to deliver the very best results from Fujifilm’s unique X-Trans CMOS sensor. Capable of achieving high quality macro shots, the XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR features an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super ED lens and three ED lenses. As the first in the X Series interchangeable lens series to have a 1.0x magnification factor, the XF80mmF2.8 achieves high resolving power and beautiful bokeh, making it a perfect lens for capturing stunning macro images.

The XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR has enhanced AF capabilities utilizing a Floating Focus System that suppresses aberration. The lens also supports handheld shooting with Optical Image Stabilization. A fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element, making it less susceptible to smudges, water and dirt, further improving its durability. Updated X Mount Lens Roadmap Unveiled

Also announced is the latest development of the X Mount Lens Roadmap for developing interchangeable lenses for the X Series line of mirrorless digital cameras. The latest roadmap adds two new lenses: the ultra-wide angle zoom lens XF8-16mmF2.8 R LM WR and the telephoto prime lens XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR. With the expansion of the high performance X Mount lens lineup, Fujifilm covers more focal lengths from ultra-wide to telephoto to support a wide range of photography styles and shooting scenarios.

New Firmware Updates Coming Soon

Fujifilm will release new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F and X-T20 X Series cameras in November and December 2017 to add new functionality and improve operability. These updates will include new support for FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO, dramatic improvements to the AF-C tracking algorithm in zone and tracking AF mode, addition of 4K video support and computer tethering functions and enhancements to touch panel operations.

FUJIFILM X-Pro2: V.4.0 Key Features
