Today’s photo is not my typical iPad wallpaper photo. This coming Monday is Memorial Day and I thought I’d share a photo that fit the holiday. My sister in-law is overseas at the moment in Afghanistan serving with the U.S. Air Force and like many other families who worry about their relatives serving in the military we worry about her a lot. While our immediate attention focuses on her well being we never lose sight of the countless soldiers that have fallen in the line of duty to protect the United States. To all past & current serving U.S. military, Thank You. To all who have lost a loved one in the line of duty my condolences for the ultimate sacrifice your family member has made.

California sunsets can be quite amazing. On a recent trip to Santa Barbara, California I was reminded of this with an amazing light show. For 8 years I lived in Santa Barbara and as much as I hate to admit it I often took them for granted. Taken from campus point at UC Santa Barbara this particular view of the Channel Islands, Santa Cruz Island to be specific, with under-lit clouds really took my breath away. Abstract photography, one of my favorite photographic genres, as it is a reflection of how a photographer sees versus what he literally sees. Abstracts are a great form of creative escape as well, as they often break traditional photographic rules. This particular abstract might surprise you in that it was taken in the heart of Yosemite Valley. I like to think a good abstract can be found most any where and in any weather. Spring is in the air and that means wildflowers. While, Mustard pictured above, is not a California wildflower I always associate early mustard blooms with the beginning of the wildflower season. Over the years I’ve seen some rather amazing varieties of wildflowers from dwarf species in the arctic to well known California species such as the California Poppy. Costa Rica is well known for its abundant wildlife, but it is also full of beautiful landscapes. Inland the foothills provide a beautiful backdrop to the ever changing tropical skies. Dense rainforests are often the core attraction to Costa Rica ,but it has a variety of climates in each corner of the country that provide numerous opportunities for nature photographers. Friday Freebie features an image to liven up your iPad display with images from my travels… all for free.

Last week I received some inquiries to desktop wallpaper. For the time being I’m going to stick to iPad wallpaper, but inevitably I will expand to include desktop wallpaper. Stay tuned.

This particular photo was taken the same day I photographed Big Sur Crashing Surf. As I waited for golden hour light I couldn’t help but explore capturing the motion and color of the water. If there is one iconic characteristic of the coastal waters off Big Sur it is the amazing aqua and blue tones seen in this image. Kicking Off: Friday Freebie iPad Wallpaper

This is the kick off post to a new experiment… Friday Freebie.
Friday Freebie posts will feature an image to liven up your iPad display with images from my travels… all for free.

This particular photo was taken in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. To add a little playfulness to the scene I decided to experiment with a Canon 15mm fisheye lens. The effect highlighted the cloudy sky over the towering Grand Tetons versus the ever dominant Grand Teton mountains. If you’re as passionate about photography as I am, I have some great sources of photo inspiration for you to start your weekend.

Art of Composition Lectures

If you’re looking to improve your photography Art Wolfe (@artwolfe) is running a series of lectures on the Art of Composition in 5 cities through October. Check out the schedule here on his web site and if you sign up be sure to share that you found out about it via the JMG-Galleries blog. If you’re in the SF Bay area Art will be in San Jose on September 25th.

Inspiring Books & Prints

Michael E. Gordon (@MichaelEGordon) has released a folio of amazing large format black and white photographs of the Southern California desert aptly titled “Desert”. Thanks to Twitter I caught wind of the release of this folio right away and bought it without hesitation. Given Michael’s fine artistic eye and technical prowess I knew this folio would be great. Upon receiving it I was not disappointed, impressed not just by the great photographs, but the detail applied to the presentation of his work. At “Desert” was a bargain. If you’re a fan of Michael’s work as well pick this one up before the price reverts to 9.

William Neill (@wgneill) has released an amazing collection of his early photos from Yosemite National Park in an eBook titled William Neill’s Yosemite: Volume One. William was kind enough to share a courtesy copy of his eBook with me and it brought back a flood of memories in reading his articles and viewing his photographs in years past. This particular eBook contains over 100 pages of inspiring photographs of Yosemite’s pristine beauty. If you’re unfamiliar with William Neill’s work this is certainly a great way to introduce yourself to his incredible photography. Well worth the price tag for the digital edition.

David Sanger (@davidsanger) has a wonderful book San Francisco Bay, Portrait of an Estuary. David was kind enough to provide a courtesy copy of this book to me and its an amazingly well done book. The images & essays are excellent and the print quality is superb. If you’re attracted to the beauty of the San Francisco bay area or want to learn more about its rich natural history this is a must have. David has signed copies available on his site for only .99. Definitely worth checking out.
