Fujifilm X-T2 tethered shooting firmware arrives, also adds button lock

30 Nov

Fujifilm has released its much anticipated new firmware for the X-T2 that enables tethered shooting with the forthcoming Tethered Shooting Plug-in Pro application, but has added a number of other fixes and a new feature.

Fujifilm X-T2 users will now be able to set up a function button to lock all the body buttons of the camera so that they don’t get pressed by accident during shooting. Users can determine which button they want to use for this purpose via the custom settings menu.

As with previous updates for the X-T1 and X-Pro2 this new firmware fixes an AF reliability issue when using the longer end of the XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR and a problem that meant that Nissin’s i40 flash unit wouldn’t fire.

Further fixes include issues around exposure in very specific conditions, connectivity and the high speed burst mode when used with flash.

For more information see the Fujifilm website.

Firmware update for Panasonic G85 panning issue expected next week

12 Nov

We recently reviewed the Panasonic Lumix G85, and while it scored a Gold Award, eagle-eyed readers noticed a ‘stickiness’ in panning video clips when mechanical image stabilization was turned on. You can see an example in our video above.

Last week we reached out to Panasonic representatives regarding the issue, and today we received the following official statement:

“Less than a week ago, Panasonic became aware of some reports that the G85’s image stabilization wasn’t delivering the same level of smooth performance that the GX85 is while slow panning in video mode. Panasonic is working to solve the issue with a firmware update as soon as we can. Panasonic appreciates all the valuable feedback and always focuses on meeting or exceeding our customers’ expectations.”

We’re told the update should be available as soon as next week, which is very encouraging. I’d like to personally thank our readers for being so quick to notice the panning problem. It’s because of you this issue was so rapidly addressed by Panasonic.

Fujifilm X-T1 and X-Pro2 firmware updates released, X-T2 update delayed again

09 Nov

Fujifilm has released two firmware updates: firmware version 5.00 for the X-T1 and version 2.01 for the X-Pro2. Unfortunately, X-T2 owners will have to wait a few more weeks for their own firmware update, which is now scheduled to release on November 29th. When the X-T2 firmware is finally released, it will add support for tethering with Adobe Lightroom.

The new X-Pro2 camera body firmware update brings several bug fixes, as well as improvements to AF tracking and phase detection AF accuracy, improvements to optical image stabilization when using the electronic shutter, and the addition of an auto power save feature to the ‘Power Management’ menu.

The X-T1 firmware, meanwhile, is very small, and involves added support for the EF-X500 Shoe Mount Flash, as well as new menu and function items related to it.

The X-T1 firmware update is available here, and the X-Pro2 update is available here.

Sigma introduces trio of firmware updates for Quattro, MC-11 and 150-600mm F5-6.3

28 Oct

Lens and camera manufacturer Sigma has released three firmware updates that improve the functionality of its sd Quattro camera, the company’s MC-11 mount adapter and the two versions of its 150-600mm F5-6.3 zoom lens.

The update to the sd Quatrro camera deals with an issue that causes the camera to freeze when being controlled via the company’s Capture Pro tethered-shooting software package, while the update for the MC-11 prepares the device for Sigma’s new and forthcoming 12-24mm F4, 500mm F4 and 85mm F1.4 lenses. The MC-11 allows users to mount certain Sigma EF- and SA-mount lenses to Sony E-mount cameras, and the update improves AF accuracy of EF-mount lenses that aren’t fully compatible with the system. It also allows lenses with Optical Stabilizer built-in to switch off in-body stabilization systems to use the in-lens system even when the lens isn’t fully compatible with the MC-11. With the firmware installed the start-up time of the combination is also improved.

AF accuracy is also the main theme of the update to the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports and Contemporary lenses in the Canon and Sigma mounts. The lenses will perform better when used with the MC-11 mount adapter, and with the sd Quattro in the case of the Sigma mount version. The update also reduces the sound made by the aperture blades in the Canon mount versions during filming both with and without the MC-11 – and the lenses are now fully functional with the Canon Digital Cinema Camera EOS C300 Mark ll.

Those with the Sigma USB dock can install these updates themselves, and those who don’t have it can take their lenses and MC-11 to a Sigma approved service center and have the firmware updates installed for free. For more information visit the Sigma website.

Pentax K1 firmware update adds electronic shutter in live view mode

04 Oct

Pentax has released new firmware for its flagship K1 full frame camera that includes the ability for users to select electronic shutter shooting for the first time. Firmware version 1.3 adds a live view Electronic Shutter option to the menu system that the company says avoids the vibrations caused by mechanical shutter actions immediately prior to the exposure of the sensor. There are some limitations however, as the shake reduction system can’t operate during electronic shutter exposures, HDR mode won’t work, external flash units won’t be triggered and the drive is limited to single shot or multiple exposure modes.

Other functions added by this update include the ability to shoot square images and to record only two frames (Off and Type 2) when using the anti-aliasing filter simulation bracketing feature. Previously, three frames had to be recorded in a sequence that included Type 1 as well. A general ‘bracketing cancel’ Off option has also been added to the camera menu under the BKT function.

Pentax says that other more general stability issues are fixed too with this update. To read more and to download the firmware see the Pentax website.

Leica S firmware update improves top LCD panel info, adds Adobe-compatible image rating

14 Sep

Leica has released new firmware for its S and S-E medium format cameras that improves the quality of information displayed on the top plate and in the viewfinder. Firmware versions 4.0.0.0 for the S (Typ 007) and 2.5.0 for the S-E (Typ 006) also allows users to mark images with a rating that can be displayed in Adobe’s Lightroom and Bridge applications. With the firmware loaded the cameras will also remember the degree of magnification last used in review mode and automatically default to that next time the magnify button is pressed.

The information panels now provide more icons to indicate what modes the camera is using, and critically offer a measure of how much time capacity is left on the memory card when shooting video and how many more shots are left in the buffer for high-drive shooting in stills mode.

The new firmware is available for download now for customers who like to update for themselves, while others can take their camera to their nearest Leica store or service center.

The firmware can be downloaded from the support section of the Leica website.

Press release

Firmware updates for Leica S cameras now available

New firmware updates are available today for the Leica S-System. Registered owners can log in to the Leica Owners’ Area and download the new firmware version 4.0.0.0 for the Leica S (Typ 007) and 2.5.0 for the Leica S/S-E (Typ 006) medium format cameras, or take their camera to a Leica Store or Leica Customer Care in the UK for a complimentary update service.

Leica works in close collaboration with users on the continuous development and optimisation of its products. As a result, a number of improvements in this latest firmware update are based on the direct recommendations and suggestions of professional photographers.

The new features of Firmware Update 4.0.0.0 include a revised layout for the top plate display panel, which now provides even more information for the user. The new ‘Rating Function’ is supported by Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC and Bridge CC software, and improves the workflow of selecting images – giving users much faster access to the images they have tagged.

With this firmware update, the most recently used zoom setting in review mode is now saved, enabling faster assessment of image sharpness/focus when reviewing a specific part of a picture. Distances displayed on the top panel can also be shown in feet, and it is now possible to see the remaining recording time when shooting video. Also new in this update is the ‘PC’ symbol, which indicates when the camera is connected to a computer. In addition to the above, the first resistance point of the shutter release now displays the number of exposures remaining for sequential shooting (maximum buffer memory) in the viewfinder, and the new ‘mirror-up’ icon appears on the camera monitor screen.

DxO releases major firmware update and accessories for DxO One camera

01 Sep

DxO has released a significant firmware update and an expanded range of accessories for its DxO One camera. The improvements include remote operation over Wi-Fi, while the accessories include a waterproof case.

The firmware update finally enables the camera’s Wi-Fi, making it possible to use it remotely. The camera can either create and ad hoc connection to an iOS device or can join an existing Wi-Fi network.

The Wi-Fi system uses the Apple Lightning connector to establish the communication between the two devices. These ad hoc connections should have a range of 10-15m, depending on how much radio traffic there is. Connections across existing Wi-Fi networks work over a greater range but use a slower transfer protocol.

The firmware update also improves both the camera’s battery management and the battery level reporting, meaning you should be able to shoot for longer with the camera and have a clearer idea of how much battery life remains.

Accessories

DxO has also launched a series of accessories that considerably extend the One’s capabilities.

These include a footplate/tripod mount, that allows the camera to sit upright and includes both a standard tripod thread and Arca-Swiss-style flanges. These are closer together than usual, though, so it may not be compatible with all Arca-Swiss heads.

There’s also a rugged case. This comes with two clip-on backs, one of which provides environmental sealing and allows the continued use of the touchscreen and a second that provides full water proofing (to a depth of 45m). The case includes a hinge attachment, making it compatible with many mounts and accessories designed for GoPros.

With the waterproof back attached, the camera’s shooting mode can be changed by holding your hand over the lens for 3 seconds – allowing a degree of control without having to remove the camera from its case.

There’s also a set of adapters to allow 30.5mm filters to be clipped onto the front of the camera. This makes it possible to add diopter lenses or optical filters to the camera easily.

The firmware update and associated iOS app will be free. The tripod stand will cost around $ 24.99/£19.99/€24,90, while the ‘outdoor case’ has a recommended price of $ 59.99/£49.99/€59,90.

Press Release

The DxO ONE award winning camera takes it one step further with two new state-of-the-art features

PARIS and SAN FRANCISCO—August 31, 2016—Camera manufacturer DxO announces major updates to the DxO ONE Miniaturized DSLR-quality Camera for iPhone, including Wi-Fi remote control and a new waterproof Outdoor Shell designed to further extend its elds of use. Upholding their promise to make the camera even better after you’ve bought it, Wi-Fi Remote Control will be available to all existing users free of charge via a forthcoming 2.0 software update. DxO’s accessories ecosystem also introduces an ultra-compact Stand and a snap-on Optical Adapter, enhancing creative possibilities for the DxO ONE which captures pro-quality photos and videos that you can share instantly to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and more.

DxO’s new Wi-Fi Remote Control implementation is remarkable in that it completely eliminates the cumbersome and altogether frustrating Wi-Fi con guration process that plagues every other Wi-Fi-equipped camera on the market. When attached via DxO’s patented Lightning connector, Apple iOS can seamlessly pass its Wi-Fi authentication credentials from the iPhone to the DxO ONE. In-house or in-of ce, users can take advantage of this unique DxO innovation that lets the camera immediately tap into the Wi-Fi network that your iPhone is already logged onto. And when traveling about, or out in the wilderness, your DxO ONE can just as easily create a direct Wi-Fi connection to your iPhone. By enabling remote connectivity between the DxO ONE camera and your iPhone, photographers are free to explore every conceivable photographic angle, while still having control over every capture setting, and the ability to easily view, edit and share their content to social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

“Last year, we revolutionized mobile photography by packing DSLR-quality into a camera design so incredibly small that it could always be available in our pocket,” said DxO CEO and founder, Jérôme Ménière. “And now, thanks to Wi-Fi Remote Control and our new accessories ecosystem, all our users can take the DxO ONE with them absolutely anywhere, without restrictions, and extend their creativity even further.”

The Outdoor Shell, compatible with all existing DxO ONE cameras, is extremely rugged and yet quick and easy to attach. The shell can be equipped with either of two waterproof back doors, one of which is splash proof (IP67), perfect for sailing or walks in the rain. The other is fully submersible and immersion proof to depths of 45m (150 ft) for scuba diving in a reef or just swimming in your pool. The design features a dual clamping system that snaps securely into place to protect your DxO ONE camera from water, dust and shock, while providing access to power switching and multiple capture modes without having to open the shell. Built to stand up to the elements, the Outdoor Shell is made from durable high end polymers and stainless steel. The shell accepts 30.5mm thread optical add-ons, features a 1?4-20 thread for tripod mounting, and can even be attached to popular Action Cam xtures and harnesses. Available in seven exciting colors including yellow, coral, lime, olive, black, white and lagoon, the waterproof Outdoor Shell is the perfect way to protect and personalize your DxO ONE.

The 2.0 software update also introduces Mobile Smart Lighting, a lighter-weight variant of the famed Smart Lighting feature in DxO OpticsPro, which automatically analyzes each scene and applies an intelligent and customizable global tone map—in this instance, to every photo you take with your DxO ONE. The overall effect is similar to having added a ll light to the picture, which dramatically enhances the dynamic range of your images. The automatic 2.0 update also includes signi cant enhancements to battery management and power consumption including an on-demand auto- focus mode similar to that of DSLRs, and an innovative underwater white balance that automatically compensates for the blue cast to achieve a more pleasant rendering in your underwater images.

“It seems every few months the team in Paris automatically updates my DxO ONE with cool new features,” said celebrated motorsports photographer, John Thawley. “Now, with remote Wi-Fi control I’m totally untethered. Combined with the protective shell, I’m free to place the camera in all sorts of new and discreet scenarios. This means I can capture high resolution images that just weren’t possible before… not with any camera!”

An e-store, accessible right from the DxO ONE app, allows you to easily order any of the new accessories including an ultra-compact Stand that uses an ingenious combination of clamps to let you balance your camera on almost any surface or mount it to a tripod. Also accessible via the e-store is a snap-on Optical Adapter that allows standard ND and creative lters, macro lenses, and hoods to be mounted in front of the lens of your DxO ONE camera. And of course, the accessories store also provides one stop access to the waterproof Outdoor Shell that lets you take your DxO ONE miniaturized camera where no DSLR or smartphone can go.
