  • Stealth Wear: Counter-Surveillance Fashion Protects Privacy

[ By Steph in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

    Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 1
The rise of surveillance technology, including face recognition software, drones, body scans and cell phones as GPS locators, has resulted in some creative attempts to elude it. Designer Adam Harvey experiments with “fashion to challenge authoritarian surveillance” in a series called Stealth Wear (via PSFK). Anti-Drone garments protect against thermal imaging, a special cell phone pocket blocks signals, and off-the-wall makeup and hair styling techniques make it hard to ID faces.

    Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 2

    Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 3

The Anti-Drone garments are made with a lightweight, breathable metallized fabric that reflects heat, masking the wearer’s thermal signature so they won’t show up in thermal imaging scans. Two of the designs are inspired by Muslim garments, including the burqa and scarf. “Conceptually, these garments align themselves with the rationale behind the traditional hijab and burqa: to act as ‘the veil which separates man or the world from God,’ replacing God with drone,” says Harvey.

    Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 4

These garments aren’t intended to be serious gear for survivalists looking to elude The Man. They’re fashion, Harvey explains, exploring the ways in which we can interact and aestheticize our culture of rising surveillance. Technically, even the small parts that aren’t covered by the garments, like the hands and face, can give you away. The OFF Pocket, however, is definitely usable: it’s a flexible waterproof cover fitting most sizes of phones, including Nexus and iPhones, that blocks all incoming and outgoing call signals.

    Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 5

    Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 6

If you want to avoid facial recognition software determining your identity, you’ll have to get even more creative. Developed as his master’s thesis, Harvey’s project CV Dazzle attempted to find makeup and hair styles that would elude recognition. This collaboration between hair stylists, makeup artists and fashion designers used custom software that exposes the vulnerabilities of the OpenCV face detection algorithm, creating styles that exploit these weaknesses. The looks are definitely a bit cyber-punk, but it’s interesting to see them gain a little practicality. Check out an article on ‘how to hide from machines’ that explores more of these techniques at DISmagazine.

  • March Fashion Photography Workshop in LA

There’s one thing that I have noticed from doing my workshops that is quite endearing: I watch the workshop students forge friendships from the weekend long seminar that carry on for months afterwards. I see them add each other on Facebook and continue to encourage each other along their individual paths towards becoming fashion photographers. It’s been really sweet for me to watch this! I see them commenting on each other’s pictures and keeping in touch with one another through skype and email, because they comment about it! Very cool! We all need to have people on our team when we’re starting out. People who we trust to critique our work as we develop as photographers and people who root us on and tell us to keep going, even when we feel like sacking it in and giving up! It’s been a wonderful PLUS to see this happening in my workshops.

Photo by: Jerome Lim – Workshop Student 2012

This March, in Los Angeles, I will hold another Fashion Photography Workshop. Held at BoxEight Studios in (the now very hip) downtown LA, BoxEight becomes our home for two days of intensive learning. Saturday we’re going to cover how to light beauty using different modifiers strictly for lighting the face and we’ll learn how to position the light for optimum benefits. After lunch on Saturday we learn lighting for fashion. We try 4 or 5 different lighting set ups, going from basic catalog or look book lighting, to showing you some much edgier, editorial lighting. The great thing about Los Angeles in March is that the weather is fantastic! The great thing about BoxEight is there is an outdoor studio which makes it perfect to take the shoot outdoors at the end of Saturday and conquer some outdoor lighting set ups!

Photo by: Jerome Lim– Workshop Student 2012

Sunday is all about honing your retouching skills. We teach you about dodging and burning instead of using filters and plug ins. We take your work to a whole other level! A much more professional one! In the afternoon, I teach about the business of fashion photography and what it takes to get your foot in the door. It’s a whole afternoon of lecture and Q & A. This is the time when you can ask me anything you have ever wanted to know about fashion photography but were afraid to ask!

Photo by: Mario Gandia – Workshop Student 2012

You can read about the entire workshop by clicking on the link here. Tickets are selling fast as we posted loosely about it on our launch post. So don’t delay! Come join us in one of the most exciting cities in the world, Los Angeles! And let’s take your work to The Next Level!

    See you there!

  • Futuristic Fashion: 35 Out-of-this-World Designer Looks

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

    Futuristic Fashion main

Looking straight out of a gritty sci-fi movie, these 35 futuristic and sometimes bizarre high-fashion looks envision a future of metallic artificial hair, dresses that dispense actual cocktails, accordion-like protective headgear and outfits that would fit right in on an alien runway.

    Metallic Hair by Junya Watanabe

Futuristic Fashion Metallic Hair Junya Watanabe

Human hair is replaced with sharp, shiny headwear in Junya Watanabe’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Functional helmets they’re not, and they certainly look a bit odd to our eyes, but imagine just pulling this thing onto your head every morning and walking out the door rather than spending time styling your hair.

    Fashion Technogenesis by DZHUS

    Futuristic Fashion DZHUS 1

    Futuristic Fashion DZHUS 2

Ukrainian designer Irina Dzhus is certainly thinking outside the fashion box with her DZHUS concept collection, presenting pieces of clothing as ‘metaphysical objects.’ For all their striking weirdness, many of these garments appear to be quite practical, transforming or offering hidden storage. It’s not hard to imagine the accordion-like headgear being incorporated into a functional rain suit of some sort.

    Hypnosis Collection by Ara Jo

    Futuristic Fashion Ara Jo

The ‘Hypnosis’ collection by young designer Ara Jo looks like something out of a strange dream, especially the garments that stretch over the wearer’s heads and necks. Some look like medieval torture devices. Unsurprisingly, these looks caught the eye of fashion stylist Nicola Formichetti, who chose one for Lady Gaga.

Sharp and Monochromatic Looks from Gareth Pugh

    Futuristic Fashion Gareth Pugh 1

    Futuristic Fashion Gareth Pugh 2

Few designers deliver such consistently dark, futuristic and beautifully bizarre looks season after season as does Gareth Pugh. The Paris-based, London-born designer is known for his performance art approach to fashion, which frequently includes wearable sculptures and is based on visual themes like the apocalypse, aliens and carnivals.

  • Architecture Meets Fashion: Shoes by Hadid, Gehry & More

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

    Architect Shoes Main

How would the architectural styles of Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Santiago Calatrava translate to shoes? As these 6 collaborations prove, sometimes the results are just as you’d imagine, and sometimes they’re completely unexpected. These architect-designed and inspired shoes range from the practical and wearable to sculptural art objects.

    Zaha Hadid for Melissa

    Architect Shoes Hadid Melissa

Brazilian brand Melissa offered the ideal medium with which architect Zaha Hadid could indulge her creativity: moulded plastic, which makes it easy to create shapes that can’t really be achieved with more traditional shoemaking materials. Says Hadid, “The design engages with the ?uid organic contours of the body. The shoes asymmetric quality conveys an inherent sense of move-ment to the design, evoking continuous transformation. The concept addresses the perception of wearing the shoe in motion rather than a static display on a shopping window.”

    Frank Gehry for J.M. Weston

    Architect Shoes Frank Gehry

Would you ever imagine that shoes designed by Frank Gehry would be so… conventional? The architect known for flashy, amorphous metallic structures designed these six-buttoned black-and-white leather boots for the 2009 collection of shoe company J.M. Weston.  “You shouldn’t have to differentiate between disciplines, shoes are very architectural and always have been, and even more recently there are new shoes… (that are) buildings.”

    Zaha Hadid for Lacoste

    Architect Shoes Hadid Lacoste

Zaha Hadid designed a series of limited edition shoes available in quantities of just 1,000. According to Hadid, the shoes were designed “utilizing dynamic fluid grids, which when wrapped around the foot, expand and contract to negotiate the body ergonomically – creating a unique undulating and radiating landscape, ultimately translated to shoes in fine calf leather.”

    Julian Hakes for Mojito

    Architect Shoes Julian Hakes

    Architect Shoes Julian Hakes 2

The Mojito shoe by architect Julian Hakes wraps around the foot in a continuous ribbon, and lacks the footplate that one might say is the most essential part of the shoe. As with most of these creations, however, Hakes’ design is more about form than function.

Rem D. Koolhaas for United Nude

    Architect Shoes Rem Koolhaas

The nephew of famed architect Rem Koolhaas, and an architect himself, Rem D. Koolhaas teamed up with British shoemaker Galahad Clark to create a line of architectural shoes for their brand United Nude. United Nude designs has also been inspired by other art forms, like furniture – they have a shoe that honors designers Charles and Ray Eames.

Santiago Calatrava-Inspired Shoes by Tea Petrovic

    Architect Shoes Calatrava

The architecture of Santiago Calatrava is captured flawlessly in a series of cutting-edge shoes by Tea Petrovic  for a project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo. “I have created a shoe collection, as my graduating project, that is centered around the idea that each shoe is an sculptural-architectural structured form. To underline their sculptural form, the shoes are kept white, which on the other hand emphasis the artistic language, present in the entire collection.”
