Press release:

ZY Optics release the Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5X Super Macro Lens with extended working distance

Shenyang China, Nov 25, 2019 – Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) have released a new Super Macro Lens for full frame cameras, the Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5x Super Macro Lens and it features a wide magnification range and a very long working distance.

Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5X Super Macro Lens has a wide magnification range (from 1X to 5X) allowing photographers to capture subjects at different sizes. Users no longer need to DIY or use any extension tubes to reach high magnification shooting.

The lens is also designed to have one of the longest working distance for ANY super macro lens. The closest working distance at 5x magnification is 3.93” (10cm) and 10.7” (27.2cm) at 1x magnification. This working distance is so much longer than traditional macro lenses in the market. Photographers can now start shooting macro objects without getting too close and scare them away.

The extended working distance also implies lighting can get to the subjects easier. It is also more friendly to use on video shooting. This new super macro lens also has a near telecentric performance which is a big advantage when it comes to macro image stacking photography or industrial usage.

The new 1x-5x Super Macro lens incorporates a 12 elements in 8 groups structure which delivers impressive resolution from corners to corners. The chromatic aberration is also controlled to the minimum (APO design). Weighing merely 1.65 lbs (750g) and 6.7cm long, it is a perfect companion for both wildlife or indoor lab shooting. It is relatively compact in its class which allows photographers to capture extremely fine subjects or patterns with different sizes.

Greater magnification can also be achieved by stacking extension tubes or bellows. The high magnification is extremely useful for scientific purposes. The lens can only be used in macro distances and cannot focus to infinity. A 58mm filter thread is also available.

Sony issues service advisory for its 16-35mm F2.8 GM lens

18 Nov

Sony has issued a service advisory for a select number of 16-35mm F2.8 G Master lenses after it was revealed some units are causing Sony full-frame cameras to stop working when the lens is attached.

According to the advisory, select Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM lenses cause the camera to stop working when attached and prevent the camera’s screen from turning on. The advisory notes lenses between serial numbers 1800502 and 1823192 are those in the danger zone, so to speak.

If your lens’ serial number is within that range, Sony has a tool on the service advisory page (translated) that will let you enter the serial number to see if your specific lens is affected by this recall. In the event it is, Sony says it will inspect and repair it free of charge through March 31, 2023.

The form on Sony’s service advisory page that allows you to input your serial number to confirm whether or not your lens is affected.

We have contacted Sony to clarify what regions this service advisory is limited to as well as additional information about the returns process for affected lenses.

Update (November 18, 2019): Updated the introduction paragraph to clarify what issues the affected lenses cause and updated both the headline and article to note the service advisory isn’t limited to the Japan region.

Press release:

Kenko Tokina announces the release of the NEW atx-i 100mm F2.8 Macro F

Same great optics, brand new look – The atxi 100mm f/2.8 Macro FF lens for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras

Huntington Beach, CA, November 15, 2019: Kenko Tokina, Japan’s leading manufacturer of premium camera accessories, is releasing the Tokina atx-i 100mm f2.8 Macro FF lens for full-frame DSLR cameras from Nikon and Canon. Distributed in the US exclusively by Kenko Tokina USA, this new lens provides unparalleled versatility with the award-winning optics.

The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF Macro is a versatile mid-range auto-focus telephoto lens with excellent close focusing capabilities reaching life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 11.8 inches (30cm) from the sensor plane. Engineered for Canon EF and Nikon F mount full-frame DSLR cameras.

At (1:1) reproduction, the lens provides a very comfortable 4.5 inches of working distance between the front of the lens and your subject. The fast f/2.8 aperture makes it easy to focus in low light and renders soft beautiful bokeh. Making it an excellent choice for portraits, landscapes, video, and small world photography.

The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 Macro is a “flat-field” optical design that suppresses the field-of-view curvature to zero. This means the lens yields excellent edge-to-edge sharpness at all focus distances and apertures. The lens’ multi-coatings render natural color with extremely low light falloff, perfectly controlled chromatic aberration, flare and ghosting.

The One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism makes switching from auto-focus to manual focus simple. While in AF mode the user only needs to snap the focus ring back toward the camera to engage “real” manual focus control. This gives photographers an authentic tactile MF feel with hard stops on either side of the focus range like traditional manual lenses. Additionally, the directional rotation of the focus ring matches the direction of proprietary Nikon and Canon lenses.

“This is the second lens offering in the new atx-i series.” says Yuji Matsumoto, President at Kenko Tokina USA. “It combines the award-winning optics of the original ATX model with a sleek new look that matches the cosmetics of today’s advanced DSLR cameras.”

Worldwide sales of the Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF Macro lens will begin on December 6, 2019 with authorized Tokina USA retailers taking pre-orders November 15, 2019.

Estimated USA Street Price of $ 429.00

The lens weighs 1570g (3.5lbs) and accepts 82mm filters. Optical construction comprises 22 total elements in 17 groups, including one aspherical, three Extra-low Dispersion and two Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion lenses to reduce chromatic aberration.

The Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm F2.8 will arrive alongside the also-announced 16-35mm F4 in January at a price of $ 2600.

Press release:

Panasonic Launches Two New L-Mount Interchangeable Lenses for the LUMIX S Series Full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Camera

Newark, NJ (November 6, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to introduce two new interchangeable lenses based on the L-Mount system for the LUMIX S Series Full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Cameras. Designed for professional use, the LUMIX S Series offers uncompromising photographic expression with its high-quality cameras and lenses.

The LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) is a large-aperture telephoto zoom lens that boasts high descriptive performance across the entire zoom range. The LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635) is a versatile wide zoom lens that provides high resolution images and a beautiful bokeh despite its compact, light-weight profile. Both high-performing LUMIX S PRO lenses achieve LEICA’s stringent standards.

LUMIX S PRO/S Lens Lineup as of November 2019

  • LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 (S-X50)
  • [NEW] LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635)
  • LUMIX S PRO 24-70mm F2.8 (S-E2470)
  • LUMIX S 24-105mm F4 MACRO O.I.S. (S-R24105)
  • [NEW] LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200)
  • LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F4 O.I.S. (S-R70200)

In addition to Panasonic’s existing portfolio of first-class lenses for the LUMIX S series family of cameras, the company is committed to designing and developing 11 or more lenses with the emphasis on the “LUMIX S PRO” class by March 2021. Currently, more than 46 interchangeable L-Mount lenses are available or will be available from Panasonic, Leica Camera AG and Sigma, opening up a virtually limitless spectrum of new creative possibilities.

LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200)

Designed and developed for professional field shooting, the LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) uses 2 UED (Ultra Extra-low Dispersion) lenses, 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses and optimum alignment comprising 22 elements in 17 groups, effectively suppressing both axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Astigmatism is also corrected with an aspherical lens, achieving high resolving performance. Adoption of a double focus system suppresses fluctuation of aberration even at close distances, which results in high descriptive performance from the center to the corners over the entire zoom range despite its large aperture.

Covering from 70mm to 200mm, the use of a Teleconverter allows a maximum 280mm (1.4x, with DMW-STC14) and 400mm (2x, with DMW-STC20) super telephoto shooting*1, with maximum 480 fps focus control for high-speed, high-precision auto focus. The O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) in the lens complies with the camera’s Body I.S. and the 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2*2 makes it possible to use a 7-stop slower shutter speed*3. Adoption of a focus clutch mechanism enables instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing.

The constant F2.8 large aperture provides smooth defocus gradation from the focus peak to the neighboring area of the image to achieve a beautiful bokeh effect as well as a rich perspective. The LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was a fatal problem in all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography.

The rugged, dust/splash-resistant*4 design withstands use under harsh conditions even at 10 degrees below zero for high mobility. The filter size is 82 mm, with an 11-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635)

The LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635) is a versatile wide zoom lens boasts high descriptive performance in both photo shooting and video recording.

Comprising 12 elements in 9 groups, the use of 3 aspherical lenses, an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens and a UHR (Ultra-High Refractive Index) lens and the optimum alignment achieves high MTF performance despite its compact size and light weight. It boasts stunningly high resolution toward the corners even at wide open as well as a beautiful bokeh, suppressing double line bokeh and vignetting.

A double-magnet linear motor is integrated for the AF actuator, featuring high power despite its small size, achieving a maximum 480 fps high-speed sensor drive. This realizes fast, high-precision AF to ensure that photo opportunities are never missed. Like the 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200), the 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635) adopts a focus clutch mechanism, enabling instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing, as well as excels in video recording performance thanks to a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing.

It is also rugged dust/splash-resistant, *4 withstanding harsh conditions even at 10 degrees below zero for high mobility. The filter size is 77 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

Both lenses will be at retail in January. The LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 will available for $ 1,499 and the LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 is $ 2,599.

*1 Use of the tele converter reduces the effective aperture by one f/stop (DMW-STC14) or two f/stops DMW-STC20)
*2 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2 can be used with the camera LUMIX S1R, S1 and S1H, as of November 6, 2019.
*3 Based on the CIPA standard [Yaw/Pitch direction: focusing distance f=200mm, when
LUMIX S1R/S1/S1H is used.]
*4 Dust and Splash Resistant does not guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is subjected to
direct contact with dust and water.

Tamron developing a compact 70-180mm F2.8 telephoto zoom for Sony E-mount

23 Oct

Tamron has announced the development of a compact tele-zoom for full-frame Sony E-mount bodies: the 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD. The lens will be just 149mm (5.9″) long and will weigh in at 815g (1.8lbs), and it will use the same 67mm filters as the two other lenses in the series: the 17-28mm F2.8 and 28-75mm F2.8.

The 70-180 will offer ‘several’ specialized glass elements and will use the company’s VXD linear focus motor. The minimum focus distance is a relatively short 0.85 meters (33.5 inches). The lens will be sealed against dust and moisture, and will have a fluorine coating to repel oil and water from the front element.

Tamron says that the 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD will be available in Spring of next year.

October 23, 2019, Commack, NY – Tamron announces the development of a new high-speed telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras, the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056). Availability of this new zoom is planned for Spring 2020. The lens will be on display at the upcoming Photo Plus Expo in New York City this week and Salon de la Photo in Paris next month.

In addition, Model A056 is fully compatible with various camera-specific features including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF. This new model joins the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046) and the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036) and brings Tamron’s total of F/2.8 zoom lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras to three.

Tokina has announced the release of its new ATX-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF lens for Canon EF and Nikon F mount crop-sensor cameras.

The re-designed lens is constructed of 13 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical elements, a ‘large’ aspherical P-MO element and two all-glass molded low dispersion (SD) elements.

Kenko Tokina announces release of the NEW ATX-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF lens

NEW ATX-i Series from Tokina updates the Best-Selling super wide-angle lens for crop-sensor DSLR cameras from Canon and Nikon.

Huntington Beach, CA, October 17, 2019: Kenko Tokina, Japan’s leading manufacturer of premium camera accessories, is releasing the Tokina ATX-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF super wide-angle zoom lens for crop-sensor DSLR cameras from Nikon and Canon. Distributed in the US exclusively by Kenko Tokina USA, this new lens is ideal for photographers and video content creators who specialize in landscape, architecture, documentary, environmental portraits, and night sky imagery.

The Tokina ATX-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF is re-designed for an improved user experience and better image quality. The constant- aperture lens provides excellent edge-to-edge sharpness and resolution. Reduces flare and ghosting, while maintaining excellent contrast and color. A new waterproof topcoat also makes it easier to clean.

Popular among cinematographers too, because the lens provides a wide cinematic feel, minimized breathing, no edge distortion while panning, and the overall weight and internal focus design makes it an ideal choice for gimbal work.

The One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism makes switching from AF to manual focus (MF) simple.

“This lens offers technical advancements over the current ATX version,” said Yuji Matsumoto, President at Kenko Tokina USA. “It offers enhanced performance and a sleek new look that matches the cosmetics of today’s advanced DSLR cameras.”

“It is an excellent upgrade to one of Tokina’s most popular lenses.” said Greg Napoli, National Sales Manager for Kenko Tokina USA. “The original 11-16mm lens has been a staple of our line-up for years and this new version will continue to find its way into more camera bags.”

The new Tokina ATX-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF incorporates a complex optical design, with 13 elements in 11 groups. Using 2 aspherical lenses including a large aspherical P-MO element and 2 all-glass molded Low-Dispersion (SD) elements, the lens effectively suppresses chromatic and spherical aberrations. The front element provides super-low distortion and low light fall-off for straight lines and minimal exposure vignetting. Perfect for architectural, landscape, astrophotographers, and cinematographers.

Worldwide sales of the Tokina ATX-i 11-16mm F2.8 super wide angle zoom lens will begin on November 8, 2019 with authorized Tokina USA retailers taking pre-orders October 17, 2019.
