  • Video: UV light brings out the ethereal colors of everyday objects

    The Weird Lens Museum seems not only to be interested in odd lenses, but also unusual light sources for still life set-ups. Curator Mathieu Stern has published a video showing experimental work with off-visible-spectrum specialist Pierre Luis Ferrer in which they use a handheld UV light to illuminate fruit and everyday objects, making for strange, ethereal patterns and colors.

    With the lights off in the studio only the UV light is used on the subjects, which causes some materials to glow in a spectacular way. Different substances react to UV light and can glow in a range of colors, as seen in the kiwi example above.

    UV lights don’t cost more than $ 10-20 for handheld varieties, so head to your nearest hardware store (or favorite online store) and pick one up to see what interesting results you end up with. Remember to pick up a pair of protective UV glasses though to keep your eyes safe; UV flashlights are a relatively weak source of UV light, but it’s better to play it safe, especially when it comes to your eyes.

  • ‘Ethereal’ takes you to Iceland in 4K

    ‘Ethereal’ was shot by Evosia Studios in the remote Icelandic Highlands and took two years to put together. This video brings aerial cinematography together with time-lapse (a combination you don’t see too often) to produce some pretty darn amazing footage. Each frame was shot as a Raw photo with the DJI Inspire 1 drone. The individual photos were then processed using LRTimelapse, Lightroom and After Effects. The film was then edited in 4K/60p in Premiere Pro.

    The end result is spectacular to say the least – turn off the lights and check this one out in HD to really take in the full experience.

  • 28 Ethereal Images of Light Rays that Glow

    To photographers light is the most important thing above all else. It is the ultimate prize to come home with a photo with “good light”.

    One type of light that is truly ethereal is the phenomenon of rays of light. It is only possible for light rays to be visible in an image when certain atmospheric conditions exist; there must be some kind of particle suspended in the air for the light to bounce off such as dust, fog, or smoke.
