Epson’s FastFoto FF-640 scanner can digitize a photograph in one second

17 Sep

The newly unveiled Epson FF-640 is, according to Epson, the fastest photo scanner in the world. The model can scan photographs as rapidly as 1 image-per-second, doing so at 300dpi, or more slowly at a higher quality 600dpi resolution. Unlike flatbed scanners, the new FastFoto model features a 30-photo auto feeder, scanning the images to a hard drive and then providing the option to upload the files to online destinations including Dropbox, Google Drive, or Facebook.

The rapid scanning rate is made possible in part by technology that scans both the front and the back of a photo simultaneously. In addition to the scanning capabilities, the related Epson software organizes image files in such a way that they’re easy to find using searchable metadata, ‘recognizable file and folder names,’ and a capture date that, when possible, uses the date the photo was taken rather than the date it was scanned.

FastFoto also includes Epson’s Smart Photo Fix Technology; with it, users can press a related button and allow the software to automatically restore their photos, applying things like red-eye reduction, fade correction, and ‘enhancements.’ This is complemented by Dynamic Skew Correction, a technology that works with multi-roller scanners to auto-correct the angle at which the photo is scanned.

Finally, the FF-640 has what Epson describes as a ‘special handling sheet’ that is used to scan old or otherwise fragile photos. The Auto Size Detection tech means differently sized photos can be scanned in the same stack, while Double Feed Detection works with an ultrasonic sensor to help ensure no photos are skipped during the scanning process.

The Epson FF-640 is now available from Epson’s online store and some major retailers for $ 649.99.

Epson’s AR glasses will let you see what your DJI drone sees

09 Sep

Epson has announced a partnership with drone-maker DJI to ensure its Moverio AR smart glasses are fully compatible with the Chinese company’s aerial camera craft. The partnership means that the DJI Go app, used to monitor drone footage and flight information, will be tailored to suit Epson’s BT-300 glasses.

Users will be able to view video footage created by a drone’s on-board camera and read flight data on the OLED screens of the smart glasses while simultaneously being able to actually see the drone through the glasses. The app will be compatible with DJI’s Phantom, Inspire and Matrice models, as well as the handheld Osmo camera stabilizing device.

The Epson BT-300 glasses will be available late this year, at which time the app will also be ready. The glasses are on the Epson website for pre-order at a price of $ 799 plus tax. For more information see the Moverio page of the Epson website.

Epson Partners with DJI to Develop Augmented Reality Smart Eyewear Solutions for Piloting Drones

Partnership designed to enhance safety and flight capabilities of DJI drone piloting using Epson’s Moverio BT-300 smart eyewear; partnership marks first mass-market consumer application of AR smart eyewear for drone piloting

8th September 2016 – Epson, providers of the Moverio® augmented reality (AR) smart eyewear platform, today announced a partnership with DJI, the world’s leading maker of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). The partnership will ensure the development of exciting new applications for Epson’s Moverio smart eyewear that will significantly enhance the piloting experience of DJI drones for hobbyists and professionals alike.

As one of the first initiatives of the partnership, DJI will optimise the DJI GO app for the Epson Moverio BT-300 AR smart glasses. Using the app with the Moverio glasses, drone pilots will be able to see crystal clear, transparent first person views (FPV) from the drone camera while simultaneously maintaining line of sight with their aircraft. The DJI GO app is compatible with the DJI Phantom, Inspire and Matrice series drone models as well as the Osmo handheld gimbal and camera.

Epson and DJI will co-market the Moverio BT-300 as a certified DJI accessory, along with the DJI GO app later this year. The Epson smart glasses will be available to buy on DJI.com while the DJI GO app will be available for download from the Moverio Apps Market.
The Epson/DJI partnership meets various country-specific aviation agency regulations and guidelines for UAVs across Europe, specifically that UAVs should remain within visual line-of-sight (VLOS) of the pilot, enabling a variety of businesses to use drones for a range of aerial photographic and video purposes. Sectors such as construction, housing, insurance, agriculture, emergency services, conservation, academic research, film and video production all benefit from using drones today.

“The Moverio BT-300 marks an impressive advance in performance for the platform and will make flying and filming safer and help users stay in compliance with regulations,” said Michael Perry, director of strategic partnerships, DJI. “We are excited to see the incredible applications that can be built with the Moverio BT-300 and the recently-relaunched DJI SDK – the possibilities truly are endless.”

Valerie Riffaud-Cangelosi, Epson’s EMEA New Market Development Manager – Wearables & Connected Devices, says: “This is a milestone event – the first time AR smart glasses will be widely available for a mass-market consumer application. The drone market has become a priority market for Epson and we believe the partnership with DJI will revolutionise how drone pilots operate their aircraft in this fast-growing industry. Our Moverio BT-300 smart glasses are tailored for drone piloting, and its head-tracking sensors enable the drone pilot to visualise a 360-degree canvas, while keeping track of the device and maintaining line of sight. This is an important factor in terms of regulations and piloting experience, because it helps the pilot to concentrate on the task at hand and make decisions more quickly.”

In addition to making drone piloting safer, the goals of the partnership include providing pilots and film-makers with new AR tools for enhanced productivity when using a drone. Epson and DJI will also work together to create entirely new experiences for the fast-growing number of hobbyists and businesses, as well as conduct joint sales and marketing efforts worldwide.

Launching its first-generation smart glasses in 2011, the Epson Moverio BT-300 represents the world’s lightest binocular, transparent smart glasses with an OLED display. Combining breakthrough silicon-based OLED digital display technology and Android OS 5.1, the Moverio BT-300 enables truly transparent mobile AR experiences. The Epson Moverio BT-300 will be available in late 2016 and may be pre-ordered at www.epson.eu/See-Through-Smart-Glasses. Epson and DJI will be demonstrating the DJI GO app on the Moverio BT-300 during InterDrone 2016 in Las Vegas (Booth 81 this week, 7-9th Sept.), and in Cologne at COPTER WORLD at Photokina” (Hall 6, 20-25th Sept).

Epson’s 4K home projectors to go on sale next month

10 Aug

Printer and projector manufacturer Epson is set to begin sales of three 4K UHD digital projectors that feature HDR and 3D support, as well as extremely long lamp life. The EH-TW7300, EH-TW9300 and EH-TW9300W are designed for the home cinema market and come with a new high resolution 16-element lens. Each of the projectors uses Epson’s 3LCD-panel technology and boasts white and colored light output of 2,300 lumens in the case of the TW7300 and up to 2,500 lumens for the TW9300 and TW9300W. The TW-9300 and TW-9300W also offer a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 (the TW-7300 has a ratio of 160,000:1), while the TW-9300W is Wi-Fi enabled and can receive 4K, HDS and standard definition content wirelessly from host devices.

Epson claims that the bulbs in these projectors have a lifespan that allows users to watch a movie every day for seven years (based on that movie being 1 hour and 45 minutes long) with the bulb in Eco mode, and the projectors can remember up to ten lens positions to make viewing different image formats easier.

The projectors have been announced at different times in different regions but will go on sale in September at £2199, £2999/$ 2999 and £3299/$ 3299. In the USA the TW-9300 and TW-9300W will be called 5040UB and 5040Ube.

Press release:

Enhancing the immersive, big-screen movie experience, Epson adds 4K enhancement, HDR and UHD Blu-ray support to three new home cinema projectors

Usability is also improved with lens position memory and motorised optics

Passionate film enthusiasts can get exceptional image quality at home with the latest state-of-the-art projectors from Epson. For the ultimate home cinema experience, the EH-TW7300, EH-TW9300, EH-TW9300W have been designed to offer 4K enhancement, UHD Blu-ray and high dynamic range support, motorised optics and lens position memory.

These HDR compatible home cinema projectors combine the latest imaging technologies to bring movies to life with extra detail. They feature 4K enhancement to bring a new level of finesse to the texture and resolution of the projected image, whether they’re displaying native 4K content or digitally upscaling Full HD 1080p content. The projectors are also designed to support the most advanced content, including HDR and 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. This gives users the optimal visual experience with more depth, detail and natural yet intense colours. In fact, their expansive colour gamut displays the entire sRGB and DCI colour spaces.

All three projectors deliver incredible definition, clarity and the deepest blacks due to an exceptionally high contrast ratio of up to 1,000,000:1 (EH-TW9300/ EH-TW9300W) and a new 16-piece glass lens. Colours are also rich and vivid thanks to Epson’s 3LCD panels that emit an equally high White and Colour Light Output of 2,300 lumens (EH-TW7300) or 2,500 lumens (EH-TW9300/ EH-TW9300W). In addition, frame interpolation and detail enhancement help to create sharp, smooth and flowing images.

Keeping maintenance to a minimum, these projectors’ incredibly long lamp life means the user can watch a film every day on the big screen for the next seven years1. Installation is also simple and precise thanks to motorised optics, including a powered 2.1x optical zoom, powered focus and a new powered lens shift of ±96.3% vertical and ±47.1% horizontal. It’s quick and easy to switch between different aspect ratios, as the projectors are capable of storing up to ten different lens memory positions, enabling viewers to watch films as the director intended.

With the EH-TW9300W 4K WirelessHD projector, it’s effortless to stream content to a projector from a smartphone, games console, Blu-ray player and more. The 4K WiHD transmitter makes it possible to view high-quality 4K content over WiHD, also providing flexibility when positioning the projector.

Charlotte Hone, Product Manager, Epson UK, says: “We want customers to achieve the very best cinematic experience at home, so we’re really excited to be introducing the EH-TW7300, EH-TW9300 and EH-TW9300W. The latest technologies integrated in these models, such as 4K enhancement and UHD Blu-ray and HDR support, mark a significant improvement in image quality and will really enhance the user’s overall experience. But what’s great is that they’re also easy to use, with motorised optics and lens position memory making everything from installation to every day use simple and hassle-free.”
The EH-TW7300, EH-TW9300, EH-TW9300W are available from September 2016, priced at £2,199, £2,999 and £3,299 respectively.
