Notice: Tamron issues product advisory for its 70-180mm F2.8 Sony E-mount lens

Tamron has issued a product advisory noting that select units of its 70–180mm F2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056) lens for Sony E-mount cameras were shipped without proper calibration of the internal floating optics, which could result in decreased image quality.

The internal floating optics are designed to correct for chromatic aberration when properly calibrated, but according to Tamron’s notice, ‘some lenses have already been shipped out without the value being optimized.’ Tamron says affected units that have shipped will be inspected and adjusted or exchanged for entirely new units.

Tamron doesn’t specifically say what set of serial numbers are potentially affected, but they have set up a dedicated website for entering your unit’s serial number to verify whether your unit is affected. Above is a graphic on where you can locate the serial number of your lens.

Tamron ends the notice saying it ‘sincerely apologize(s) to all users and potential purchasers for any inconvenience this issue may cause […] We appreciate your continued support for our products.’

Cosina announces ‘Stills Edition’ version of its Nokton 40mm F1.2 lens for Sony E-mount

Cosina has announced the upcoming release of its latest ‘Stills Edition’ (SE) lens, the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm F1.2 SE lens for Sony E-mount camera systems.

The manual 40mm F1.2 SE lens is nearly identical to its non-SE version. It’s constructed of eight elements in six groups, features an aperture range of F1.2 – F22, has a 55-degree field of view and uses a ten-blade aperture diaphragm. The SE version also features the same built-in encoder for metadata and distance, which works alongside Sony’s in-body image stabilization to offer the best results.

As with other lenses in the SE series, the only notable difference compared to the non-SE version is a slightly changed external design, different groves on the rings and the removal of the aperture de-click button. The lens weighs 340g (12oz), has a 58mm front filter thread and comes with a lens hood. Cosina’s website says the lens will be released on June 24 at a suggested retail price of 100,000 yen (~$ 930).

Tamron teases new zoom lens for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras

Tamron already has six full-frame Sony E-mount lenses in its lineup, but there’s another on the way. In a video shared on its YouTube channel earlier today, Tamron teased a new full-frame E-mount lens that appears to be a mid-range zoom lens.

The 18-second clip, embedded below, doesn’t divulge any additional details about the lens, but it does link to Tamron’s E-mount lens lineup page that shows how the forthcoming lens will stack up in size compared to the six current full-frame E-mount lenses — three primes and three zooms.

You can also see in the lineup photo the new lens will have what appears to be a focus locking switch sandwiched between the focus and zoom rings. Tamron’s 70–180mm F2.8 Di III VXD lens is the only current full-frame E-mount lens in the lineup to offer this switch.

Shoot now, focus later: multi-view E-mount lens patent is Sony’s latest foray in to light field photography

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, Sony has filed a patent for an interchangeable E-mount lens that will allow users to adjust focus after the shot has been recorded. The lens appears to contain a number of lenses arranged next to each other to record multiple individual images on the camera’s sensor that can be combined later presumably to control focus and depth-of-field.

The site doesn’t tell us where the patent information was seen so we can’t read it for ourselves, but some diagrams are provided that we are told are part of the application.

The Light L16 light field camera from Light Labs Inc

Sony investigating light field technology is nothing new, as in the past it has filed patents for a light field sensor and has a partnership to supply sensors to Light Labs Inc, the manufacturer of the Light L16 camera that was announced in 2015. The draw of the technology is obvious as it can allow multiple focal lengths to be used for full-resolution zooming and/or focus and depth-of-field selection after the event.

We have seen a few attempts at harnessing the idea in commercial camera products in the past, including the Lytro Illum, Nokia’s 9 PureView and to some extent a number of other multi-lens and multi-sensor smartphones. It is hard to tell from the available information exactly what these lenses will used for in this patented idea, and whether they will be to collect distance information or be used to expand the range of tones that can be recorded in a single shot – or both.

Either way, such a lens will need a camera with an extremely powerful processor or the ability to simply record the images for processing in software later – as with Sony’s Pixel Shift Multi Shooting mode that requires images are processed in the company’s Imaging Edge desktop application.

As we have all noticed in the past though, exciting patent applications don’t always result in a product that comes to market. If genuine however this does at least demonstrate Sony is still pursuing ideas in this area.

Yongnuo announces new 50mm F1.8 ‘nifty fifty’ autofocus lens for APS-C E-mount cameras

Yongnuo has announced the YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM, it’s newest autofocus ‘nifty/thrifty fifty’ lens for Sony E-mount APS-C camera systems.

Yongnuo currently offers 50mm F1.8 lenses for both Canon EF-mount and Nikon F-mount, but this new ‘nifty fifty’ is designed specifically for use with Sony’s a6000 series mirrorless cameras.

The lens is constructed of eight elements in seven groups, including one low-dispersion element to minimize aberrations. Yongnuo says the lens also features a seven-blade aperture diaphragm, gold-plated contacts with a metal bayonet mount and a ‘nanometer multi-layer coating’ to minimize ghosting and flares. The internal autofocus is driven by a digital stepping motor (DSM) and the lens offers an onboard Micro USB port for upgrading the firmware.

The lens doesn’t currently have a price or release date, but considering Yongnuo’s previous lenses sought to undercut the already-affordable ‘nifty fifty’ lenses on the market, you can count on this one coming in very cheap when it hits retailers’ shelves. The lens measures in at 58mm (2.3in) long, 64mm (2.5in) diameter and weighs roughly 146g (5.15oz).

Sigma’s 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN is a fast and versatile zoom for Sony full-frame E-mount (as well as Leica/Sigma/Panasonic L-mount). It’s well-constructed, with extensive weather-sealing, and reasonably fast to focus. Output appears nice and sharp, corner-to-corner, and aberrations/ghosting are fairly well-controlled. Take a look for yourself.

Laowa launches new 65mm F2.8 2x Macro APO lens for Fuji X, Canon M and Sony E-mount

Venus Optics has unveiled its latest lens, the Laowa 65mm F2.8 2x Macro APO lens for Fuji X, Canon M and Sony E-mount camera systems. This marks the first macro lens Venus Optics has designed specifically for APS-C mirrorless cameras.

The lens offers a 2:1 magnification ratio and a 100mm full-frame equivalent focal length. It’s constructed of 14 elements in 10 groups, including three extra-low dispersion elements. Venus Optics says the lens was ‘carefully designed to remove both [lateral chromatic aberration and longitudinal chromatic aberration] to an invisible level.’

It has an aperture range between F2.8 and F22, and features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. The minimum focusing distance is 17cm (6.7in) and the front filter thread is 52mm. The lens measures in at 100mm (3.94in) long, 57mm (2.24in) in diameter and weighs 335g (11.8oz).

Tamron 20mm F2.8 macro for Sony E-mount ships this month for $350

Tamron has announced that its 20mm F2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 macro lens for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras will be on sale at the end of this month. It will sit alongside two other close-focusing Tamron lenses: the 24mm F2.8 and 35mm F2.8.

The 20mm F2.8 offers a minimum focus distance of 11cm (4.3″) and a max magnification of 0.5x. This compact lens is only 6.4cm (2.5″) long and is sealed against moisture and dust.

The 20mm F2.8 Di III OSM M1:2 will be priced at $ 350 when it arrives on January 30th.

TTArtisan launches 11mm F2.8 fisheye lens for Sony E-mount systems

Chinese lens company TTArtisan has announced the availability of its new 11mm F2.8 fisheye lens for Sony E-mount camera systems.

The lens’ optical formula consists of 11 elements in 7 groups. It’s constructed of aluminum and brass and features an aperture range of F2.8-F16 with clicked aperture points.

It has a minimum focusing distance of 17cm, a ten-blade aperture diaphragm and weighs in at 485g. It is currently available to order for $ 215.
